T42 has its charm.
>not a QXGA R50p

yo saucey make a video on ebay selling.

>tfw I have T30, Cisco aironet PCMCIA card and couple of floppy drives
I do plan to get integrated floppy drive on my T30 because muh security factor when compared with USB.

In what regards? I should make another eBay laptop buying guide video... That old one is bad. xD

Should I do a beginner's guide on eBay selling, like packaging and slinging laptops?
i am also thinking of the setup we have at my work. but the lighting at the warehouse is shit... and its cluttered at the moment.

I think all my floppy drives are bad on the T-Series ThinkPads I have. Maybe one drive works.
Need to get a zip drive.

Greatest. Of. All. Time.

>floppy drives are bad on the T-Series ThinkPads
Huh? Is this a thing? I mean my CD drive on my T30 seems to be dead from what I have diagnostic it. Couldn't get any file from it and the whole machine couldn't read any cds.
Well damn, I might as well just get ultrabay batter that is compatible with ultrabay slim or hdd caddy.

>Should I do a beginner's guide on eBay selling, like packaging and slinging laptops?
yeah, I just watched your last vid, I think, the one where you go though through some dude's listings.

ebay buying and selling guide would be nice

And here it is.
Mah T30 w/ GENTOO
feels good man

No. I think all of mine are bad. Just bad luck on my part, I don't necessarily store them well too. I think.
I got a lot of bad CD/DVD drives too... (x
When I mean a lot, it was like, the 5th one I tested finally worked.

like critiquing other listings? Nice mode like how Kyle and Paul talk about other's people pc builds?
I could do one about my favorite sellers that I buy parts/laptops from.
Oh yes and laptop buying. It might take me months, but I'll wait to get a laptop that I'll flip for almost twice it's price.

>one week later

congrats, now install arch

>like critiquing other listings?
well, that could work too.

I was thinking about to sell stuff on ebay, how to take pictures, packaging, stuff like that.

Ah, gotcha. Will do :D

But this still need some polishing and there is a lot still to do.
My to-do-list says LFS or TempleOS. Well parabola is there as well but I have find away to install parabola and get rid of systemd to install openrc instead.

Budget:

Unless the specs of the T520 are *really* good, that's a very steep price.
What's in it?

The pen-compatible models seem relatively cheap. Any reason why those aren't more common?

I know you said no ebay but this is just to give you a rough idea, I looked at the EU ebay too to get an even closer idea, about the same price after conversion.

Why buy lenovo? They install backdoors at the chink factory

they suck

380 HDD and 1920x1080 LDC screen
So only ram upgrade from what I can see.

yeah, I'd say that's too much. Unless thinkpads are stupidly expensive over there I'd wait.

Guessing the pen sratches the display huh? Looks like an ATM display (or Nintendo DS)

sup

no it's a glass display and the pen tips are plastic

they are good compared to other convertible laptops
but they suck at being a tablet and suck at being a laptop

Good luck getting TempleOS on 32 bit hardware

...

...

...

i've been using an x230 tablet for about 6 months now after switching from an x220 (non-tablet). its alright, but its not worth paying extra for in my opinion since the only bonus that the tablet models have are IPS screens and you can just mod a new IPS panel into any other thinkpad anyway. the pen is really good if you use it with oneNote (i use this laptop for university and math note-taking is really easy thanks to it) but thats really it

Anybody have luck with an AFFS screen on the x200?

I hear it makes it less shit

youtube.com/watch?v=f4GQJ1wz55E

Australia ?

The latch on my x60 broke. what do?

About to cop this.

Wish me luck.

lol, is this thing going to overheat now?
wtf did you use?

I think your fan intake is neat tho.

dang that's a great deal

The peg or the mechanism?

These are the ultimate school laptops IMO, Tablet mode works great for taking notes. When I was at uni all I would carry is my x220t, charger, and a small folder for loose paper. Would steal the monitors, keyboards, and mouse from computer lab computers for a workstation setup.

I can't imagine a more practical device, however now that I've graduated I'm thinking of upgrading to a x230 and do the keyboard mod, since tablet is sortof useless for non-pen activities

Just picked one up. Installing antergos ATM. Even got a docking station with it.

Just ordered a specced out W510

What am I in for lads?

>is this thing going to overheat now?
2ºC ou 3ºC more in the motherboard.
>wtf did you use?

>I think your fan intake is neat tho
thks

Why are the Lenovos well liked but not the HPs? Just wondering, is it the ports?

I want a laptop with a 1080p screen and a decent processor that won't give me shit if I install Linux on it at about $170 or less. Suggestions?

So I just got my w520.
I install ubuntu through usb just to get it going.
Don't like ubuntu after 5 minutes of running, try to install arch through usb to see what the "next step" is before I go into gentoo.
All hell breaks loose.
Usb boot doesn't work.
Try to just run ubuntu again, doesn't work.
Just shows type mark thing flashing.
Try multiple things, different usb's different distros to boot from usb, write off usb boot not working, just flashes black and comes back to bios screen.
Take out ssd, its a samsung 125gig
Erase it all.... idk if this was a good idea or not....
put it back in, re-try the usb boots, nothing works.
Stuck in bios screen.
Burning Arch on a dvd right now as we speak.
In b4 it doesn't work too.
(Kinda want windows 7 but its my first day running linux so i'm not going to give up)
Help please and thanks

Its a great laptop. I've had x,t,w series. w510 was my favorite.

If you dont like ubuntu, theres no way you're are going to like arch or gentoo. What didnt you like about it?

right now I don't like that it wont run on my w520 after I installed it. Like why you no keep loading you ugly looking OS you.
I didn't like it cause it was ugly.
Arch and Gentoo are more intricate which makes them more beautiful.

But nvm, I doubted boot from dvd. Thank you internet gawdz for boot from dvd.

>Arch and Gentoo are more intricate which makes them more beautiful.
You're retarded. Ubuntu can look exactly the same as arch and gentoo.

You probably want either Mint or Kubuntu since you seem like a complete beginner.

If you like, type
sudo apt install kde
into your Ubuntu before wiping it it to try out KDE, not my preference but it's easy to set up and newbies tend to like it.

Not gonna lie, Still learning the differences of application between ubuntu, arch and gentoo.
All I know is Gentoo is the way to have full control over the linux platform. Arch is like diet version of gentoo and ubuntu is used by air force and I have no clue what it can do.
But Im simply trying to use this laptop to do all my coding and learning on.

Well stick with ubuntu, debian, or fedora especially if you are new. Dont listen to anyone telling you to install gentoo or arch. Just because its harder to install doesnt mean anything. You're better off actually using your os than spending all your time installing it. I recommend trying ubuntu mate.

You're not going to learn to swim by jumping straight into the deepest part of the pool, nigger.

How about you learn the basics of the OS before you read documentation geared towards intermediate *NIX users.

Halp with my first derp so I can conquer the derps to come?
PLZ MASs'uh

What processor do you guys recommend for the T470?

got an x220
now what

Install a Unix-based POSIX-compliant Operating System

i already have

Would you rather have an X230 or a T430, both with HD+ or FHD and the classic keyboard mod?

i bough a t430 yesterday, a model with i5-3360m, but it has the dedicated nvidia graphics, which was not listed when i was buying it. is there a way to disable it? some people say the the edp and d-sub ports are wired onloy to the dgpu. i will be running linux, so is it better to return the laptop and search for a version without the dgpu?

So I just nabbed a nicely kitted out T420 in fantastic condition for cheap.
What now?

What is the best thinkpad for linux?

an old, slow, thick laptop with shit battery life
that looks fucking hideous, why the hell would you do this?

one without optimus

i have one, the x220t. Its pretty fuckin dope. I use it with renoise a lot. Altho its somewhat heavy and im sure the hinge is a weakpoint. ive traveled with it in a backpack and it was aight.

>install Linux
> Bluetooth doesn't work
Mmmm...

I am a retard,
whats so different about a thinkpad than a normal laptop.
Also can i code on it.
Even games?

Both.

Wow user!
You are a retard!
It's just a normal laptop
But more durable and usually has longer battery life or at least an option to strap on enough batteries that'd you have a hard time flying with it

>Budget: as cheap as possible
>Location: UK
>Size: doesn't matter
>Performance: able to play rainbow six siege and witcher 3
>Other requirements: cheap

wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bluetooth
plsease read this you lazy nigger (no matter what distro, arch wiki is a great source)
thinkpad *20 + eGPU through ExpressCard port, and some motherfucking GPU which will run those games well

A Thinkpad will tend to be a well built enterprise laptop designed for survivability and repairability. They're fairly cheap and plentiful too, in hardware configurations that are still useful today.
I just nabbed a 2011 model from a seller today and on the merits of the keyboard I'm typing with right now alone, I think it's my favorite ever laptop. Feels like I could throw it at a tank and the tank would be worse off, too. It's just pure quality.

It just doesn't work

So now that I'm used to using a Thinkpad, what am I supposed to do when I want/need something more powerful in a portable form factor?

newer thinkpad

Have Lenovo un-fucked the range yet? Because from what I've seen it's basically all downhill from the xx30's on.

when upgrading to an ssd, is it better to get sata or msata and put it next to my radio card? are there any drawbacks to having an msata ssd? i am not sure whether ssds heat up and i do not want it to heat up my left palmrest.

**40 was about the lowest of the low
The trackpoint didn't have buttons on the **40, and the X1C had an absolute abomination of a keyboard

It's slowly getting better. Keyboards are still chiclet, but from what I've seen on /r/Thinkpad, they're not bad keyboards and some people prefer them to the old keyboards.

Good to know that by the time I've worn this T420 out there might actually be a half-decent replacement.
How about the actual build quality? I've heard some serious complaints that things have been going downhill in both durability and quality control. Kind of concerning considering they're both things you kind of expect with the Thinkpad name.

Do you guys own more than one thinkpad?

I'm thinking of getting another one, because lugging around a T420 all day kinda sucks. I'll use the T420 at home, and have my portable be the X220.

Is an X220 a good choice? Can you mod the screen to IPS?

Again, from what I've seen on /r/Thinkpad, QC doesn't seem to be a strong point of Lenovo, but it's still rare to get problems.
Plus, the returns process doesn't seem to be too painful so if you do buy a brand new one, you aren't spending weeks trying to contact Lenovo and get a replacement.

Saying that, they're very well built

I have used both keyboards and the new one is not as bad as some claim.
The keys are better than any other laptop brand and on par with the old ones.
There is more spacing around the keys which means hitting the wrong key is very rare, but cleaning the keyboard is a bit harder.

What is bad about the new keyboard is the layout.
The printscreen has replaced the menu key which is enfuriating, the pg up/dwn is moved down to the arrow keys which is actually pretty good, but the worst for me was the f-keys placement.
Before they were seperated into groups of 4 which means you could easily press the right one, but now this is a lot harder.

okay /tpg/ I'm buying x200
>no ram
>no hdd
>a battery
>no mention of charger but I might phone them up soon
I have spare hdds and a spare kit 8gb of ddr3
what else do I need to know? any quirks?
hows the performance?
I'm planning on making this my dedicated shitpost machine for installing distros and messing around with it while I keep my T430 more for entertainment and my daily driver

Raibown six siege is playable even on t420 with intel hd 3000 (Using a dual-channel memory, for gods sake.)

You can't expect Witcher 3 without a dedicated GPU, and even so, it would have to be relatively new, this games sucks for optimization. (Meanwhile, you can play MGS:V looking equally good or better on those intel suck-ass igpus.)

I'm thinking of drilling holes right under to improve the intake of air for my x220t. some said it is pretty effective on theirs

fantastic portable laptops, x220 had an IPS option, but they are hard to find. probably easier to just replace the screen. you can get the x220tablet which always comes with an IPS screen, but at the cost of a bit larger and less battery space due to the tablet conversion setup

You need a bit of tweaking to get mgstpp running though
Like reducing the shadow size just a bit more than the settings would let you

From a performance and compatibility standpoint, what's the best OS to be running on an xx20? I've got a unit that the last owner stuck W10 on and I'm wondering if I should bother switching to 7 before I get around to slapping an SSD in it.

Did I do good? I will be installing Void most likely! All x220 users, tell me about this laptop!

How hard/expensive is it to swap a T420 screen with a FHD+ IPS screen?

I bought t440p and installed Loonix on it. When I run github.com/mjg59/mei-amt-check, it says:

Intel AMT is present
AMT is unprovisioned

AFAIK it means that my computer is not vulnerable to network infection but is vulnerable to local privilege escalation. How do I patch it? Lenovo website only has the update as an exe file.

if you disable AMT you aren't vulnerable to anything

If you're not from the US thats a great price, if you are, you could have probably gotten it for lower, but still not terrible.

fantastic piece of hardware, you're gonna fall in love with it. Depending on your needs, you might want to upgrade the battery.

No

Pls reply, only info I can find is outdated with broken links

>FHD+

do you mean FHD or HD+?

well, you won't find an HD+ IPS screen
and FHD swap is not existent as far as I'm aware
