If it was brown-black-orange-gold, it would be 10 kilo-Ohms with +/- 5% tolerance.
Why don't they just write the number on it instead of having color charts?

Some are very tiny, I'm guessing it'd be easier to print a band of colour than an extremely small number.
because the colours are the things that give it resistance. If you were to draw another circle the resistor would gain more resistance, depending on the colour.

"Colour" reaches us from the Latin equivalent "Color" via Old French, not via French.

The colors are easier to read, even if you make them small.
The system is very simple and people learn it very quickly.
black is 0, white is 9.
Then the colors in between is red yellow, blue, and grey.
The colors in between those are the mix of the neighboring colors.
eg, black = 0, red = 2, 1 is brown.
red = 2, yellow = 4, 3 is orange.
The numbering can be a bit tricky at first because sometimes the tolerance is brown and it is not as clear which direction to read from.
But in OPs case, it is clear he rotated it 180 degrees which is why it is upside down.
the colors show 102, which means 10*10^2 or 1k Ohm.
Usually people only use these large resistors in schools these days, so don't worry about it if you think it is too complicated.
But I would still advice to orient all the resistors the same way on your board, so reading the resistance is easier when they are soldered and measuring gets more difficult.

actually, it's not uncommon for large heat dissipating resistors to have their values printed on them with numbers. still, usually pretty small print. but what the others said about them typically being too small for print to be practical is true.

I'm pretty sure this is the other way around. Why would GB english randomly add extra letters and swap z for s and s for c in words? I'm pretty sure American English is more modern, and thus the better version.

Which way are you going to put it into the circuit? The colors are what determine the resistance (except the gold, which is tolerance), so it matters if you put it in as brown, black, red or red, black, brown.
