WinRar is nagware but is a free product and has better features, better stability.

I love the people who cite open source as reason to use 7zip while using Microsoft Windows. Really smart.

The difference between RAR and 7Z is that it is open source though. RAR files are proprietary while 7Z files are not. A 7Z archive will pretty much always be readable while RAR could never get updated again and support will fade out. You can see this happening with other early compression formats like Macintosh DiskDoubler archives.

Not to mention .7z files are generally better compressed than .rar. Encrypt a file with 7zip and then the same file with WinRAR and you'll see that the 7z file will be smaller in size.
