Are Optical Discs Obsolete?

I really don't think I can even remember the last time I even used one. Literally the last purpose I had for them was for operating system images, and even that has been replaced by bootable USB flash drives now. I have no use for an internal DVD drive. It's just taking up unnecessary space.

Music? Movies? Games? Audiobooks? That's all online and downloadable now.

Yep, though you have to take in account the amount of people who can't afford to have an internet connection, or at least one that doesn't limit their data. Also there's information that is very, very difficult to find on Internet.

>DVD
I bought a BluRay burner several years ago for back-ups after my backup HDD failed right before a catastrophe. I'd rather spend a little more time backing up and not have to worry about a dead drive when I need it.

I still use CDs to share files with people at work because the retards I work with are either losing or stealing all of my flash drives. CDs are cheaper and all of the office PCs have an optical drive.

I like to use them to archive stuff and be sure that it's in a read only format.

Also, I still do all of my OS installations from them, and have yet to boot from a flash drive.

>mfw I bought a bunch of dual layered BD-Rs to go with my BD-RE drive
>mfw I've never used one

>It's just taking up unnecessary space.

If the space isn't necessary, why complain it's being taken up? Don't you mean that it's occupying space you need for other things, i.e. necessary space?

>Still have a huge stack of blank CDs and DVDs I bought in the late 90s/early 2000s
>Used about 10 of em total, mainly for OS installs

Yeah it pretty much died for me when I got an mp3 player and a thumb drive.

Part of why my laptop isn't more compact and more portable is to accompany the DVD drive which takes up a thick part of the computer.

So what's a good use of those 5.25" drive slots sitting in my case?

Optical media is obsolete for over a decade now.

Why would you bother to burn a CD for people this dumb?

3 years ago I was working with this guy who was older and he wanted me to provide him with classic emulators and roms. I went to target and bought a whole stack of DVDR's and burned everything on one for him. I still have this giant stack of blank DVDR's minus one today. I think I should burn hardcore porn on them, label them shit like "The Lion King" and "Frozen" and just drop them around the city

Yeah, I see uses for a stack of DVDR discs for sending up to 4 gigs to people and not expecting the media back. SD/USB cards may have better performances, but if you're not using the additional space it becomes pointless.

I keep a spindle around and an external USB drive in case I need something disposable to boot from. They're really convenient in a pinch when you don't have any spare flash drives around.

He's probably a help desk monkey. Been there and it really is convenient.

My car doesn't have an aux port and i'm too lazy to replace the radio for one that does, but not too lazy to burn a bunch of cds

Moar hard drives
SD/USB hubs
DIY digital clock

>mfw if dvd rental was more widespread we'd see way more quality pirated material online

It's too bad Blurays never took off for PC games, I liked buying games in those giant boxes. Surprised games don't come on USB's now.

I replaced my optical drive on my laptop with an optical bay drive caddy. 250GB SSD in the main slot, 1TB HDD in the OBDC. It's pretty sick.

Yeah but what's the point? Why would companies waste money on packaging and discs when most people already have access to a good enough internet connection to download games?

Holy fucking shit. Gonna need this.

I feel like OP meant to say it takes up space unnecessarily

No. They're still the best budget data archival storage. They last well over 20 years and are very cheap per GB.

I like buying audio CDs, ripping them to FLAC and then throw them on the pile...

I buy my video games physically whenever I can so that my license to play them can't be revoked.

You know very good what he meant you dumb faggot. Take your autistic sputter somewhere else you piece of shit.

If only you cared half as much about actual language use as you pretend to care about the intricacies of whatever scripting language you have a sticker for on your laptop.

not to mention you only lose 4-50gb at a time opposed to 500gb-10tb if a hdd goes out.

This. $150 investment never realized.
