rolling release distro like arch is actually worse for custimization because you constantly have to recompile shit every week to keep up; it actually pidgeon holes you to use whatever packages it provides / on the aur by psychologically torturing you
like making you spend 8 hours compiling gcc63 and firefoxgtk2 just so YOU DONT HAV ETO USE THE STUPID GTK3 FILEPICKER
every single thing you try and change just commits suicide two weeks laters; using arch is torture
have fun fixing your fonts every month only an autistic retard or a normie who only uses official packages would ever use this distro
Been on Linux exclusively for almost a decade, have yet to *have* to compile. Did occasionally to get a bleeding edge mplayer, but not at all recently.
Kayden Morales
so what should we try else? Gentoo?
Isaac Butler
obviously you fit into the normie use case then might as well ubuntu; why do you need to be on a rolling release distro theres zero point ever

your not a argument
Eli Walker
what are you even trying to say?
he might as well use Ubuntu because he's not compiling his software manually in Arch? I don't get it
Caleb Garcia
what please try and keep up

stopped reading therr
Thomas Sanchez
if you're using programs not in the official packages or aur then they break all the time and you have to constantly recompile them every few weeks to keep up with the rolling release system
so ironically its better to use debian or ubuntu or something if you actually want to do anything at all how you want it instead of being a normie and using approved packages
Wyatt Phillips
For real, install gentoo/funtoo/Source Mage.

Arch is a binary distro, jockamette: nothing gets compiled when you upgrade.
Owen Fisher
you guys are so dumb and missing the point omg
Evan Gutierrez
find me a binary of firefox-esr-gtk2 oh wait u cant it takes 9 hours to compile along with its dumb dependencies
Thomas Hall
it takes like 30 minutes if you don't use a laptop, just borrow someones desktop and copy the finished binary package to your laptop
Landon Myers
wtf I love arch now just find someone with a super computer cluster who can compile gcc63 and firefox in 30 minutes hahaha
what a joke
Joshua Perez
you're trying too hard lad, this is on an average ~6 year old CPU

Awful thread.

if you are recompliing the same files can't you just use a .Bat file to do it for you. the .Bat format in windows and Dos was a program that can do repeditive code tasks in a few seconds. Mircosoft stopped using .Bat files as the mainstay after windows 3.1. but its still a option on text based OS's like Lunix ( btw this is nothing to do with GNU)
Linux kernal should support it or somthing like it.
Nicholas Johnson
Contuining.
as a Old dos user I often hat to set up and add in drivers on start up for all my devices and set up updates and installs at the termainal the whole code was 1300 charaters and so i made a .Bat for execute all the operations every time i started the system. the .Bat was called. SETOS.Bat back then all the IRQ and DMA addresses had to be set up manually and all drivers had to be set manually.
thank fuck that jumpers are few and far between these days.
Sebastian Adams
yeah its weird linux stil doesnt have anything like this
Anthony Parker
Odd indeed. maybe a modded patch could fix that issue.
Jaxon Foster
I know this is bait, but write a bash script.
Sebastian Jones
You really should just install gentoo if you care this much.

>mom tell them they're normies hehe
>compiling gcc63 >firefoxgtk2 Why would you want to use deprecated software versions? Sounds stupid. Anyway, there's gtk2 version in AUR: aur.archlinux.org/packages/firefox-esr-gtk2/
Well, no one can help you then. Try to stop using outdated software.
Joshua Morgan
I liek turtles
Josiah Sanders
wow arch sure is great for customization hehe
Jack Miller
Use the binaries, like if you read the whole code you're compiling, >>>#yolo
Jackson Harris
>Use the binaries, like if you read the whole code you're compiling, what kind of normie software are you using that has binaries for it
Dylan Fisher
So good it's not the only distribution.
Aiden Diaz
what?
John Hernandez
Arch is designed for binary packages. If you don't want to install binary packages use Gentoo, Funtoo, or Source Mage. Either that or if you want binaries for your esoteric software go Ubuntu and pray it is either in the apt repos or there is a ppa. Or you can enjoy the amazing experience that is Slackware and install all your software without a package manager.
Austin Taylor
tell me more about slackware
Austin Peterson
manual dependency management if that doesn't sound freaking awful to you then you probably have autism
Kayden Johnson
Without a package manager you have to deal with dependency hell on your own. You may or may not have to compile, it depends on who releases the software. Updating your machine will be a nightmare, but hopefully you won't have to since Slackware is pretty stable.

Arch Autism Language Demystified
>A camera and entire circlejerk team was stationed outside the basement. The following is what we learned
"Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck" We believe this 'tism is when x.org won't start anymore and this is not a meme fuck you!!!!!!!
"Guguugugulugluglguu" (and then several anime figurines end up on the lawn in an autism-explosion) He jacked off. monitoring distance had to be moved back several hundred yards due to smell and I don't mean tuna fish
"whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyy" This 'tism usually is the arch sperg talking to some ex-friend (who doesn't use arch, fuck you fuck you) who is actually making money now, or sumshit
(nothing is said and arch sperg is waving hands on lawn running in circles) ***UNKNOWN 'TISM BEHAVIOUR***
"muh package old man age!!!!!!!!!" heard for 3-4 days The arch sperg met a debian user
In order to destroy the arch linux user, we all printed out arch logos and taped them onto our shirts and ran inside screaming about apt. Within 15 seconds the 'tism moved into an even more obscure basement and used an even shittier distro anyway please stop posting
Blake Hughes

>itt: absolute fucking retards that probably dont even use arch completely missing the point you want to use snowflake firefox (and I get why), dont expect there to be binary packages for your shit. Set up your own build server, and start maintaining a binary package for AUR (this isnt much work, just set and forget).
don't expect everything to be handed to you on a silver platter, arch users have it good already with the AUR, obscure firefox versions not having binary packages is a pretty minor issue.
>approved packages you mean binary packages and somehow that translates to normalfaggotry
AUR=Arch User Repository you, the arch user, can contribute to the AUR thats the entire point stop whining and start doing
see above, AUR is very much diy for esoteric packages
>recompile arch >women op has a penis for sure >only women rice >Filepicker what are you even trying to say
im still mad at the state of Sup Forums now fucking hell bunch of poser faggots
Alexander Gomez
No retard, it's good for customisation When I went to install something from GitHub on Debian I have to spend a week manually recompiling packages I'm manually downloading just so things are up to date enough to compile anything released this decade
How is a weekly pacman -Syu so your systems FUCKING UP TO DATE AND NOT VULNERABLE psychological torture
Just update your system, if you've taken time to quickly read the wiki pages of all your systems major components before slapping it together, a weekly Syu should be flawless
