Long time Windows user here

My boss unilaterally decided that we'd switch from perfectly working Dell laptops to pic fucking related.

You guys have any tips for me to survive this shit?
Never used a Mac before and I'm fucking lost.

dongle up

yeah
that's gonna look really smart when we visit customers
"oh, your beamer is VGA? Let me connect my HDMI to VHA dongle to my USB C to HDMI dongle"

Long time hybrid user. Ask away. Using an MBP.

Iv'e used both for years. Lmao stop being an idiot, it's apple, it has literally no learning curve whatsoever. maybe trackpad gestures but there's only like 5

Install Windows

>no learning curve whatsoever

I heavily rely on keyboard shortcuts and I kinda like the Windows shortcuts:

Win + D: Desktop
Win + L: Lock
Win + I: Settings
Win + Arrow : Move windows to a side or another
Win + E: Explorer

You guys have a list of handy shortcuts for Mac?

dell has this neat dongle with hdmi, vga, ethernet and usb-a all in one and not too expensive

i dont know if it works with macbooks though

Just the basics

forgot pic

>emacs

The Dell I used so far required none
(it had Eth, VGA, HDMI, USB, etc)

thank you user

Another question:
I'm using a dongle to connect to another monitor via HDMI
can I daisy chain dongles to connect to a second HDMI monitor?

>get a superior laptop for free
>bitches about it

For settings cmd + space + typing "sett" is probably faster. Spotlight is crazy awesome.

Also getting the hang of 3 finger gesture to switch between desktops is much faster than multitasking on Windows either way.

>superior
yet to be proven. This machine has reduced my productivity significantly so far.

>Spotlight is crazy awesome
It's inferior to voidtool's "everything" search
can't find half the files I'm looking for, I'm reduced to having to explore the file system

>3 finger gesture to switch between desktops
I can see how that could be useful

Any quick way to put two programs side by side on two halves of the screen? Trivial with Windows and pretty useful for me

it's the sad truth, literally 0 io on new macs

It's all about the gestures. 4 finger swipe out shows desktop, three finger side swipes swap workspaces, 3 finger swipe up to display all workspaces (mouse over top edge after swiping up for complete view). Unfortunately, Macs don't have the nice window manager where you can easily do split screen. Otherwise, most things have shortcuts you can Google, and gestures can be configured in tracked settings.

Also, spotlight (function-spacebar) is your friend. Basically works like the windows key (to search/run), but better, and you can install apps yo make it.even better (use command strings like Chrome's search bar, regexes, etc).

>This machine has reduced my productivity significantly so far.
Yes but it's not the fault of the machine that you're not used to use it. Though I get when you're coming from, I hated it too for half a year and almost switched back to Windows.

>Any quick way to put two programs side by side on two halves of the screen?
Now that's done in a pretty stupid way, F3/mission control and then you have to "manually push one inside of the other".

>Basically works like the windows key (to search/run), but better
meh/10
it's not finding anything I'm looking for, just "apps" and shit. not files.

>Macs don't have the nice window manager where you can easily do split screen
that's pretty fucking unfortunate

>Yes but it's not the fault of the machine that you're not used to use it.
I'll admit that

>F3/mission control and then you have to "manually push one inside of the other"
I can't get that to work
I'll try tomorrow when I'll be back at the office AND WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO USE A FUCKING MOUSE SINCE I LEFT THE DONGLE AT HOME AND DON'T HAPPEN TO HAVE AN USB-C/ BLUETOOTH MOUSE
for fuck's sake

It's better to get used to the gestures, hell you can even abuse force touch to open a new tab as you'd do with the middle button on a mouse.

>I can't get that to work
Try: cnet.com/how-to/how-to-use-split-view-in-os-x-el-capitan/
Though unless you absolutely have to have them side by side, I'd rather open them in full screen and switch between them with 3 fingers gesture. Shit is instantaneous even on a crappy Core M and very intuitive once you get the hang out of it.

>it's not finding anything I'm looking for, just "apps" and shit. not files.
That's weird. Did you check the Spotlight settings?

pretty much this
NEETs get their panties in a twist at anything that isn't windows XP 32-bit because deep down they're all the tech illiterate geezers they pretend not to be

CMD + Space is your best friend my man. Also swipe gestures, learn em.

Install windows 7 via bootcamp, uninstall osx

>Try: cnet.com/how-to/how-to-use-split-view-in-os-x-el-capitan/
>doesn't work with Excel
fug
nice find tho

nothing relevant in the settings.

I have four or five .kdbx files on my machine, typing .kdbx or kdbx doesn't locate them. frustrating.

>doesn't work with Excel
That's just weird. It works fine with Word and One Note, and Exel does have the same base, does it not?

install spectacle

cmd+spacebar opens spotlight for seaching
cmd+shift+g opens goto dialog in finder
ctrl+tab switches tabs of whatever program you're on

Also configure hot corners for quickly accessing mission control or show desktop when you move your mouse to lower right/left corners of screen.

You are in for a treat, honestly. Memes aside, they are fucking great machines, though CPU can get sometimes overwhelmed - can be expected from 2 watt cpu

What version do you have? My 2015 definitely feels weak from time to time and 2016 is pretty much identical but going by reviews, 2017 seems just right.

it's a 2017
browser benchmarks seem promising (on par with my Dell)
Still haven't benchmarked excel yet but I'm not expecting miracles

Well, it's really dependant on the temps so if the bench is short enough, it could be pretty close.

Mine is 2015, saving for 2017 i5

Why do you try to impersonate people?

And by high loaf I meant jetbrains indexing shit or using it with parallels

>That cutted connector

it's literally god-tier.
thank your boss.

Quit and sue your boss for sexual harassment.

Buy a dongle with all the shit you need for $40 on Amazon

That's it you're good to go

Fuck off Ranjeet.

It's like using a phone but it's more powerful

pretty sure command+space isn't activated by default
but I could be wrong I haven't used a mac in 6 years

I can't even use the HDMI and VGA at the same time on that adapter

You clearly can, didnt you see the picture?

You should use finder's search function

Use vmware fusion.
It's nice, you get bash and some software from brew, but you can also have any windows software.
Give windows 12/16GB of RAM and mac gets the other 4.
You can suspend Windows VM when you don't need the bloat.

OS X is nice, honestly. Having a proper bash shell, and shit like python already installed is nice. And Homebrew is amazing for downloading CLI tools. I fucking hate trying to find windows ports for things like nmap

Put lock screen key on touchbar.
You'll get over moving windows, it's the sad reality of a mac.

>I'm using a dongle to connect to another monitor via HDMI
>can I daisy chain dongles to connect to a second HDMI monitor?
You may not need to daisy chain if you find a 3rd party that supports two HDMI ports.

USB-C to HDMI

Can't you just install a different OS?

The drivers are shit. Not apple or windows help each other, it's kinda disgusting. Apple tries but Microsoft doesn't even tell them what to do.

>being too dumb to use an Apple product

So this is Sup Forums's 'technology' board, a bunch of drooling retards?

Will try, thanks.

Might have to resort to that. Thanks.

There's bash on Windows now. Works great
>sudo apt-get install cmatrix

No touchbar
Gonna remap command option power to command L
Higly doubt I'll move over

Thanks

The whole point is "security" by removing Windows (durrrrrr)

Speaking of which, how does one secure a MacOS machine?
On a PC I would have followed this:
chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

(inb4 durrr macs are invulnerable:
cvedetails.com/top-50-products.php)

Linux is #1. How will it ever recover?

>Though unless you absolutely have to have them side by side, I'd rather...
Typical Mac users response
>If you actually have to use totally retarded feature, there is of course the utterly shitty farce of a remotely similar feature the great apple has crafted, though I won't admit it's shit and instead urge you to change the way you are used to interact with literally any other os on the market to the obviously superior, but somehow completely lacking way apple has envisioned you to use it. After all, Facebook and shit posting doesn't require such power user features.

Seriously the amount of 'this power user feature is not available natively, but you can install this $80 app to get a similar functionality' I've read in forums through the years of using macs is quite substantial.

Just works™

This
I've found two tools that *sort of* emulate the functionality, both of which cost money.

He's not a social media manager for some shitty startup tho

ended up finding a FOSS program that kinda does that:

Sup Forums was always for 15 year olds

Cmd+option+shift+ctrl+3 = take screenshot of whole screen
Cmd+option+shift+ctrl+4 = select area to screenshot

>switching to unix system phobia
lel, winfags starting to panic for having to work with a real OS

Relax, it'l take a bit of time to get used to but its simply a one click vs double click thing. Don't over click shit either cuz unlike windows clicking the icon a billion times WILL actually make something happen.

Not saying you should, but you can use bootcamp to run windows 10 or Linux on mac

the goal is to get rid of Windows ("security", lol)

linux would be an option as well but we wouldn't buy macs for that

I wasn't talking about this specific thing, but the general attitude of macfags

First thing is install brew. It gives you a package manager similar to what you might expect on Linux. Try to install things through either Brew if you can (100% of command line based tools can come through here).

Finder (the Mac equivalent of Explorer) is really awful. If you're a power user have a play with something like mc (midnight commander)* which is a ncurses (terminal based) file explorer.

The built in terminal doesn't work like you might expect it to work (copy pasting, etc). Install iTerm2*.

Mac has its own demu called Spotlight which you can access with Apple + space. This can replace win + R as well as the start menu.

*Alternative clients exist, do your own research.
