I can play every XP era game I want in WINE using PlayOnLinux as an easy GUI. I'm on Debian and I have several Windows VMs but I only use them for work because the compatibility layer support from WINE is so good.

Go on steam, then sort by SteamOS + Linux. Then you'll see what Linux gaming really looks like.

I have a feeling Tux Racer is more fun than half of the PC games released this year alone.

Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

The terraria part should be edited. The game is a wine-port, so is Rocket League. And a lot of games are wine-ports instead of native games so Linux does NOT have 25-35% "native" games. This is also true for a lot of MacOS games.
A wine port is basically a directX game ported to Linux using WINE as a wrapper to translate dX into openGL at execution time, resulting in at least a 25% performance drop. Developers port games like this because they're either too lazy to implement Vulkan or at least openGL, or their engine is limited and exclusively can use dX (such is the case with terraria). Or, they don't think it's profitable or are just deep inside Microsoft's ass like Blizzard.
So, Linux gaming is still a mess and it's only salvation is Vulkan and shilling against dX.

One thing I don't get is DOOM 2016 is OpenGL and Vulkan but is Windows only.

They probably didn't release it on anything else because they don't see other platforms profitable. But it is made by jews so they're likely promoting windows this way.
Although most developers release early versions of games for windows only. It makes sense to first have the "largest population" find bugs so they can fix them, and then individually work on platform-exclusive bugs after porting a fully functional game elsewhere.

And it's more fun than any garbage on windows.

But DOOM 2016 is still pretty egregious, GNU/Linux has a mainstream videogame storefront now that is selling DOOM and they still haven't ported their OpenGL title to it, just seems really weird, especially with ports of older games like the TW series popping up, those must be ported at a loss if anything.
