Nay, I'll keep my Gentoo.

5 people use fucking plan9, who gives one shit about that operating system.

I'm one of the few 9front users here. Have a 9front partition on my x1 carbon and boot into it a few times a week for the comfiness.

What makes it better than linux?

Per process namespaces, EVERYTHING is a file (not almost everything, but literally everything. All of it is accessible through a single network transparent protocol called 9P.
It's the next step in the unix philosophy. It's more UNIX than Linux, or even Unix itself is.

fqa.9front.org/fqa0.html#0.2

Do you even need to ask? Hint: it's the mascot.

Are there any modern-day equivalents to bell labs? It seems like a lot of interesting technology came out of there.

I don't like that everything is a file...I'd be worried if I deleted a file and then everything went to shit.

Like a domino effect.

To break that down, two minor things created out of a misunderstanding for the tasks of an OS that make the same kind of sperg fall for it that would fall for the UNIX philosophy.
I want that ugly thing purged, Morty.

>Plan 9 had no hope of keeping up with web browsers.

Sounds like a pretty good reason to not deal with it.

Or Sounds like a pretty good reason to start to deal with it.

What this calls for, is a bottle of failure.

That's the legacy plan 9 which hasn't been maintained for many years. You should be installing 9front which receives regular updates.

>ugly
why do you hate cute bunnies?

> can't compile a C program from acme

What's your problem?

>why do you hate cute bunnies?
I don't.
I just don't like ugly creatures sitting at the bottom of uncanny valley.
The team should have hired a professional instead of Pikes "artist" wife, with possible influence from her boyfriend.

b-b-but muh simplicity!

I don't think you know what uncanny valley is.

Ya and vanilla plan9 doesn't ship with a copy of the Communist Manifesto as well

>I don't
so... you like bunnies?

Those 3d shaded teeth attempt to make it too realistic to be cute.
Might as well shop an anus right into the center of the face.

But you are right, it's ugly for other details as well.

I also dislike go-pher if that was your next question.

Of course Uriel was right, after all he debugged himself in the end.

It also lacks (feminize)

what are write permissions?

That one doesn't have an installer.

It actually uses a rootless permission system. The whole system is extremely different from Linux or BSD. Read the 9front FQA

yes it does
fqa.9front.org/fqa4.html#4.3.5

What the actual fuck

why you would want that trash on plan9 tho

it what they do. if there is a nice open source project, they make sure it wont be successfull. either by introducing a CoC and trying to destroy the community or they try to become the main "fork" by doing some development, but then they either let it rot or change the nature of it until people are to disgusted to even think about using that code.

9front Coc, if there is any, is not harmful

>write code
>add "8c $%" in the top bar
>middle click it
>get unclickable rc error in the log

screenshot or message of the error?
it works for me

why

Porting is already a great amount of effort, and even more to keep it up to date. Plan9 is already too late.

whats 9 front?
why did plan 9 die?

OP spent time to educate you, read it please

> whats 9 front?

9front is a fork of Plan 9

> why did plan 9 die?
Plan 9 died because it was too good for this world

9Front is a UNIX-like operating system for hipsters. It uses a shitty window system called Rio that is heavily dependent on retarded mouse click gestures and everything must be run from a terminal window, because fuck shortcuts and using a mouse for anything other than resizing windows. Plan9 died because it was a piece of shit, and 9Front is only slightly less shit.

Imagine you have two pieces of dog poop in front of you, and you have to eat one. The biggest, wettest one is Plan9. The smaller, dried out one is 9Front. Either way, you're still ingesting dog shit.

Plan9 is amazing.
Keeping everything simple, consistent and designing everything really well pays off in the end.
I wish I could use it as my daily driver.

>It uses a shitty window system called Rio
You can use Rio, or write something yourself.
Actually carmack planned to write an alternative to rio, but didn't have enough time to do so in the end.

It 9front and Plan 9, not Plan9 you mouthbreather

It's

...

It once came with Mein Kampf.
Sadly they removed that (T_T)
