xubuntu is the one distro I come back to when I want things to JUST WERK. not to mention there's a solution for every problem you might encounter because its an ubuntu spinoff. also lots of software (arguably the most available)

Can you list what didn't work besides your printer? Also, which distro did you try? You might want a more bleeding edge distro if your hardware is new. Alternatively you could manually compile the latest kernel on whatever distro you want, but I don't even really like doing that.

Unless you used a meme distro, Thinkpads are pretty much the most supported machines on Linux. How do you even screw that up. If you're having problems with battery life, try installing TLP. Even has specific packages for Thinkpads. This alone nearly doubled my battery life.
