are you retarded?

That is Android.

Privacy guard.

what do you mean "instead"?

it's a distribution of android, based on AOSP
it's kind of like the "debian" of android, in that it's a popular, general purpose distribution, not aimed at any specific hardware or purpose, and isn't made by a corporation

That is android.

I hate you so much

Lineage OS is Android. People here like it because it doesn't include Google shitware like Play services or any carrier/manufacturer bloat and it gives you full control over your device. It also gets frequently updated.

This. Essentially an extended permissions system. Even lets you block Google services.

You have heard the bell toll but you don't know where the clapper hangs.

The only way to update android phones.
Lets you run android without Google Play Services (GPS)
Or at least makes GPS optional.
More features than the stock options while somehow less bloated

It'll turn your camera to shit, don't flash it.

>it gives you full control over your device
You cannot have "full control" over a smart phone when the baseband, bootloader, firmware, and drivers are all proprietary and locked down, and the phone doesn't function without them.

Some phones have a flashable version of their stock camera app and for Samsung phones at least, the only thing post processing lacks is saturation. That's easily fixed by using a third party camera app and increasing saturation values. After that, the photos taken on a TouchWiz based ROM and an AOSP ROM and indistinguishable.

>having gapps installed in the first place
son, I have something to tell you ..

>What's the point of using pic related instead of Android?
Android phones get no support so you're stuck with installing this (literally) pajeet-tier shit OS.... that breaks most of your phone's HW features.

Many people forgot to mention that you can get the latest security patches, instead of ones the OEM decided to stop at.

I need root for this?

no

Allright

>it's kind of like the "debian" of android

that's highly incorrect, please reflect on your words; lineageos is to android what chromium is to chrome, if you want to make an analogy of it

To be an autistic fuck who likes shit not to work

enjoy your botnet

the "chromium" of android is AOSP
if you want to compare with chrome, then lineageos is more like "the opera of chrome"

No, more like Lineage is to AOSP as Chrome is to Chromium. Or better, something like Android as in Nexus phones is to Lineage as Chrome is to some other Chromium-based browser: same base, with different stuff built on it. Like Debian to RHEL.

>install LineageOS
>camera doesn't work
>GPS doesn't work half the time
>IR censor doesn't work
>flashlight doesn't work
At least the botnet can't see me, except they can because it's a fucking cell phone, where you cannot go anywhere without cell towers knowing your exact location

>that battery drain...

>my i9300 gets 2 full days of battery life

Why would I when Vanilla exists?

Asking why to use LineageOS instead of Android is like asking why to use Red Hat instead of Linux. It's a distribution of Android, and it's one of the less bloated distributions. You can run it with or without GAPPS, it comes pre-rooted so you can remove whatever you need.

I think one of the nice things about Lineage is that it runs on a lot of phones, and updates frequently. Even if your phone's manufacturer has stopped updating the version of Android that the phone shipped with, you can still receive software updates for quite a while if you use Lineage. Furthermore, they tend to be quick about getting those software updates out.

Same here. My OPO gets about 2-3 days on Lineage, but it only got about 8 hours on Oxygen.

from what? Just sitting in your pocket all day?

Lineage for my phone (Z5C) says it includes "stock kernel and blobs" but I don't know what this means for the camera.

How many more years until a milestone release?

you deserve all of that, you need to read the compatibility issues before installing, some phones are not worth trying

eMail, slack, google now feed, light browsing.

Only one mentioned before I installed was GPS not working over wifi, but it also didn't work on cellular data.

IR Sensor issue was only mentioned long after I'd already gone back to stock

how many hours of screen-on a day would you estimate? I have a phone with a 4000mah battery, have location turned off all the time, have brightness at the very lowest, and I still barely have enough to get through the day with maybe 5 hours of screen on time

1-3 hours on a typical day. I only really use it when I'm away from my desk.

Can you not call google play services GPS? gapps is community standard. GPS is global position system. Gapps means google apps yes but most gapps cant run without gplay services anws, might as well call it that

It is a tracking system, I think it fits.

What version of android are you using, and do you have Facebook installed?

That's the best possible scenario. And most manufacturers don't provide camera blobs (open source camera drivers), although comparable photo quality can be achieved on custom ROMs now. If the camera is lacking some device specific options, that could be harder to solve, but not impossible.

I believe you just install a custom recovery and just flash the build that's compatible with your phone, not 100% sure if you need root to do that user. But do some quick research

Good for you to have a choice, user. I'm stuck with RR for my old phone.

>tfw have a g6 and waiting..

Might do that. What's the best way to backup my current stuff? Running a stock android.

It actually is not prerooted you fuck.

Because I got android 7.1 running on my old s4 mini

There are no decent third party camera apps you retard.

Damn, you said it brother!

Name some good third party apps

But you called me a retard, I'm wrong either way. I'll indulge you - CameraFV5, Open Camera, Snap Camera HD, Manual Camera. I've tested what I've described and you have nothing to lose by doing so yourself.

Well it's not like it could be worse than Android (besides iOS)

Not the guy you were talking to. Was just curious what some alternatives were.

Good luck using any Apps, ever

Works fine on my LG G3/Nexus 7, and this ROM isn't made by pajeets, not that that matters

>Most recent android version, when vendor doesn't give you anymore updates
>OS without google bloat, through Gapps you can still opt in but still have control over the amount of services that come with it.

why normalfags are so obsessed with installing roms on their smartphones or it is just here. not talking about lineageOS tho, my bro just accidentally removed all his data and doesnt even has a stock rom now,
just whenever i ask
>why do you install custom roms maintained by one or 2 people instead or stock
>for visual effects
fuck this is always the answer and all of them refuse to use klwp or things that actually let you rice.
fuck normies who jump on bandwagons without even knowing whats up

Most apps that complain about not having gapps will still run
I'm yet to encounter a problem

This
t. BB10OS user

he can restore stock ROM easily though
it's not a normie thing, but if it spreads to normies it would get more momentum, lineage has millions of users already
if you really going to defend stock roms, you are the real normie, almost all phone manufacturers fuck up android updates, it comes with shitload of bugs, worse camera, worse battery life...LineageOS is like installing clean Windows on a bloated laptop tbqh

There is less than 10 apps that actually won't work without google services. And even they work if you patch them up.
You always have Yalp store to download apps from Google, or aptoide as an alternative.

Again, wrong. Opera is fully closed source.

>red hat instead of Linux
The L in RHEL stands for Linux.

>normalfags flashing ROMs
This doesn't happen. I'd be surprised if more than 1% android users used a custom ROM.
The benefits are there for chink-tier devices and old devices which aren't updated anymore.

LineageOS? More like UnderageOP

because it adds features android should have to begin with, removes bullshit it shouldn't have, allows you to continue updating your phone long after your shitty amerifat jew carrier decided to stop caring about it, etc. this is like asking "why do people use Linux????"
eat shit and die normalfag. the stock camera works well enough to take pictures of things. that's all it should do. muh DSLR tier camera shit needs to fuck off.

I have the s6 and Samsung bloats stuff up to the max, can't wait for lineage to go official on my phone

opencamera you nigger

or maybe i just live in a 3rd world country.
my main concern is if you are doing it only for visual effects flashing a rom is useless and you are not even improving visual effects, and theming and ricing can easily be achieved without flashing a rom using klwp its just rage inducing that people do things that they dont even understand properly just to be hip

i haven't used the stock rom on my S4 at all, threw cyanogenmod on it the moment i got it
but i can't imagine what they did to their rom, as i've noticed it has a 2.7GiB partition for /system, which is gigantic. this is a 4.2.2-5.0.1 (stock) phone, yet lineage, at 7.1.2, is only using 600MiB of /system
i've tried recently to repartition the device so i can actually get access to all that space, but can't get it to accept a modified PIT

Just install OpenCamera, in some phones it becomes better than default.

We are already at 7.1.2, bro.

Is ResurrectionRemix and others any good or is plain LineageOS the best?

Are you on nougat? I'm still using cyanogen marshmallow on my OPO.

So can I just flash this on my s5?

only if you ask nicely

If you don't have the AT&T version and maybe the Verizon one.

Have the international one. G900f to be precise.

Does it run good with Nexus 5? I work as Uber driver part time so I need the GPS to function properly.

I have hammerhead as well... GPS works fine with HERE maps.

Running the latest weekly build btw.

>The L in RHEL stands for Linux.
That was his point …

But it doesn't you stupid fuck, don't be a faggot just because we have community standards.

>It's a distribution of Android

It's called a ROM, dumb cunt.

>not support for my 4 android devices
That is why there is XDA with Shitty® unstable® roms® that just werks™

>using the Facebook app

>>using Facebook

>samsung never changes

That's a level of control no one wants. Everyone wants to play with the light switch, no one wants to see the basic circuit that makes it work. And that's not a bad thing either, preventing access to modify the bootloader is the reason 'software bricks' don't exist on Android anymore.

I think the point was that Facebook kills your battery, and if responded yes, then would have told him to uninstall it.

It does list a lot of streetshitters in their contributor list though.

What's the best phone to run LineageOS on?
All the popular ones are budget phones or outdated phones.

I want to get a new Android phone that will get good LineageOS support.

>Does it run good with Nexus 5?
run well*

You should be fine then. Make sure to install a rom that's specifically for your version of the phone.

Makes my Moto G an actual usable decent phone, its a pile of shit on stock

Not him but open camera is a fucking crashy piece of shit

OnePlus?

>I think one of the nice things about Lineage is that it runs on a lot of phones, and updates frequently.
This sounds like a decent reason, since many carriers rely on android revisions as product differentiation. Still, if you're up to date, a rooted android with gapps swapped with the open gapps or microg or some other replacement seems better, even more so if you can just straight shut them down.

Which one? The newest one?
Does it come with LineageOS installled on it since the CM guys make it OnePlus?

OnePlus seems pretty cool about CFW as a general policy There's support for previous models, not the 5, but OnePlus released open source bits for the 5 so it might not be too long before LineageOS ROMs are available. It ships with something called OxygenOS, which is actually bretty gud for a stock ROM..
