Spotted the poorfag

>you shouldn't get something because someone's butthurt on the internet because he thinks you don't """need""" it
stay poorfag

Because we can't increase clock speed quickly but can easily add more cores at this point. Makes sense to start working on programs made to use many cores and move towards that.

You're usually not poor if you don't spend your money on dumb shit.

sorry about your poverty OP

so if a plebian buys food because it's the smart thing to do, is he rich?

...

For real-world server workloads 18 cores and more make sense.

i9 7980k is bloody overkill for a workstation chip as well as upcoming 16-core Threadrippers.

It's not uncommon for power users to need a lot of cores. Running a plex server, and managing all my video content, means I usually have at least a short list of media I need to run through my transcode scripts. I've been working through all the seasons of Psych I bought on DVD, and the files are like 2GB for 40 mins of 720p video (and it's kinda a shitty 720p, too). With h265 and a CRF of 20, I can get it down to 300MB or so with no perceptible loss of quality. However, it takes about an hour to transcode 40 mins of video. I wouldn't want that to be any slower than it is, and I have a 6core/8thread CPU (i7-6850k).

I also find myself compressing files with XZ for its superior compression ratio, and XZ is pretty slow. So it's nice to be able to just go "xargs -P12" and speed it right up.

For that matter, xargs/find/parallel are great for using all your cores.

Because I use my desktop as server and rent it out. I currently have 3 small websites hosted on it. I break even with one website, and with 3 I'm making a profit. I also have several VMs that I always keep open for testing applications that I make for work, and Windows XP in QEMU/KVM to play Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Japanese porn games.

Fight me.

Most of the HEDT buyers are probably retarded normies just buying "the best" with no regard for their actual needs.

>muh video content
Here we go...

>mfw Intel resorts to shitposting to try to make people buy corelet processors

>Why the fuck do you autistic fucks need 18 cores?

VMs, I have 20 cores but its not enough. I still have a slight CPU ready. Ideally I'd be able to assign my emby VM even more cores so it could decode 120Mbps 4K HEVC video. Pic on the far left of my graph is when I assigned it 16 cores.

>WAAAAHHHHH!!! THIS EXAMPLE IS NOT VALID JUST BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE IT!!!

Why? Blow it out your ass is why.

Sup Forums on processors is just a circle jerk. It's like children talking about Ferraris. I doubt many people here are going to buy something like AMD's Threadripper or whatever equivalent on Intel's side.

The only benefit to many cores is that you can run more shit simultaneously. Whether that actually matters to you obviously depends on what you are running and how programs are optimized to run. If you have a bunch of VMs in the background, ok yeah it will be beneficial because VMs are processor whores. If you just have your web browser open in the background and you are playing a game on Steam, there's not much benefit to be had. It's possible that some programs can be better optimized to utilize more threads when needed, but that's hit or miss depending on the program you are talking about. At that point, you are better off getting processors with stronger cores vs having more cores.

>It's like children talking about Ferraris.
lowcores plz go

>I doubt many people here are going to buy something like AMD's Threadripper or whatever equivalent on Intel's side.
Pretty much.

>need muh 18 cores for chrome tabs ^_^

That's an awful lot of money spent to be shitposting on Sup Forums.

ark.intel.com/products/75272/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2660-v2-25M-Cache-2_20-GHz

Brand fanboyism.

AMD marketers have been shoving their products on every nook and cranny of the intrawebs. From leddit, Sup Forums, AT, TH to the tech influencers trying their hardest to shit on Intel while sporting Intel machines and pretending they can live without samples.

it seems like thread ripper 16core may clock in sub 1000$ for at least the low end model... that could have been compelling enough for me to wait, especially because I may be able to use the cores, but if I am ever able to use the cores my 8 core 1700 would get me by till I get the money to buy the high end system, possibly even epyc.

as for
>If you just have your web browser open in the background and you are playing a game on Steam, there's not much benefit to be had.
well, web browser open and a crap ton of tabs, mixed with some video playing in the background, a game, hydrus network, dragon, and some other shit in the start menu, that can easily add up to 10% on my processor.

On a 4 core that would be 20%, and it would completely negate any benefit from that stronger single core when a game uses all 4 cores, mean while because games that use more than 6 are so rare, my entire system can function off of 2 cores and leave the rest to game on and I never feel it. something even a 6700k I have access to doesn't allow me to do.

>muh make -j36
It's not like a bunch of us work on software for a living and hate waiting for builds to finish...

But I'll probably go threadripper to replace my work pc because I don't feel like handing two thousand shekels to the blue jew (and I've got a 6700K+1080 for gaymes so I can live with AMD's weaker single-core performance)

>'need' in the context of personal computers

Right from the start you're thinking about this incorrectly, you dumb fuck. Its 'want', people WANT this. Nobody NEEDs anything for a personal computer to jerk around on. Get the fuck out retarded communist.

>need muh 18 cores for chrome tabs ^_^
That's what muh 64gb ram is for

I highly doubt most people are changing enough files at a time to justify buying this.

I don't know, seems like a lot of people (((NEED))) this. And nice communism meme guy.

>I highly doubt most people are changing enough files at a time to justify buying this.
$2k cpus aren't for "most people"

It's easy to trigger in C++ though, change something in one of the project's main header files that everything includes and you're forced to sit through a total rebuild

Even if the only thing you changed was a version number in a #define or some shit

Stuff I work on has a lot of moving parts so it's common that I'm compiling a bunch of small projects each time

> changing enough files
change one header in c++, causes 50 files to recompile
thank mr stroustrup

mfw finally more cores than krpm

MHz DDR3
You dont understand what the D in DDR stands for do you?

I know, it does other things

>Why the fuck do you autistic fucks need 18 cores?
Because sometimes you actually need more than 4.

>i need a 18 core processor so my single threaded makefile config can process files faster than my pcie ssd
ok

same reason i have 4 cores instead of 1.
because 'shut up and take my money'
and gibsmedats
they are enthusiast parts for people who are enthusiastic about parts.

>old ass Ivy Bridge shit and slow ass old shit RAM you can buy by the bucket load for pennies in 2017
your 1500W space heater was cool like a year ago but not anymore

shooshoo

more like enthusiastic about being a consumerist sheep in lieu of actually being enthusiastic about computing

Right now i hae a quadcore i7. This thing is so fucking slow, when I get 18 cores I will be able to do everything 4.5 times faster as right now I have to split all my data up onto 4 cores and they all have to wait in line now I can just put a little bit in each of the 18 cores and it gets done that much faster. I can put an equal amount on each core.

Imagine using gentoo on a 18 core. Imagine the compiling time.

...

Nice. How you do the renting part?

>You don't need more than 4 cores.
>Everyone needs 3584 CUDA cores.
R3 and the Vega APU's are still going to have an impact on the market, even if the high end Vega gets pooped on by an OC 1080. At the least, Vega has a chance to become a commercial success despite looking like it will be another massive disappointment as a discrete option.

That's actually true

>1500W space heater
~900W

>but not anymore
you still dont have anything nicer than my 3+ year old PC

>>muh 100,000 uber rare animu torrents with 1 seed

If I don't seed them, who else will?

It's not about the cores but the extra PCIe lanes.

ISHYDDT

Csgo competitive games don't last 25 minutes

running thousands of headless chrome instances to spam

18? I want 30

Also those 30 cores would be the least of worries considering I'd need a number of decent SFT+ NICs and a very expensive switch

You don't. Majority of Sup Forums can't even afford 18 cores.

Literally the same thing in C retard. Also Modules are coming soon™ to fix it.

I am angry. Angry about other people's computers.

Writing to a m.2 ssd with AES+Twofish+Serpent at full speed.

...

>need a number of decent SFT+ NICs and a very expensive switch
It is SFP+ not SFT, and they're cheap along with a switch. You can get switches with 2 10GbE ports for $100, 4 for $200 and 20 for $300

In trying to be funny you listed 12 legitimate reasons to want so many cores and killed your own argument.

>legitimate

Oh look. It's the frustrated guy that yells from the top of his lungs that an i3 is great and more than 8GB is the antichrist. Also has an RX 470 and brags about efficiency.

Could you just... let people do their work and not be a bothersome brat? You literally sound like a kid who throws a fit just because he doesn't have enough money to buy this shit.

Good goy, the next crypto ransom ware will take hold of your "red team" PCs much faster.

>Why do you NEED 2GB of RAM?
>Why do you NEED 64bit CPU
>Why do you NEED mechanical keyboard

Why do you NEED to make this thread?

good thing I'm not at work

Muh speccy threads

I just fapped to that 5 times in the past 25 minutes. I will need to bandage my benis

AMD
>We're releasing a 16 core desktop chip

Intel
>Well we'll release an 18 core (which uses 500 watts at load)

...

why not have 18 cores?

Dual cores are overkill amirite?

Program for a living and own servers which I sometimes host on my main machine if they aren't important.

In any case, I can buy them with a discount through work and get full-price tax credits so when you do the math, its barely more expensive. If I bought and sold them, I'd be making profit.

>MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
>THEY KEEP DOING THINGS I DONT APPROVE AGAIN

>YOU ONLY NEED 4 CORES GOY

I don't.

I'll be perfectly satisfied with the 16 core Threadripper. R9-1998X (or -2998X with Zen 2 7nm) here I come!

because gpgpu branches like shit

t. non CUDA user

>>muh blender rendering
>>muh neural networks
>>muh kernel compiling
>>muh runescape bots
>>muh college parallelism assignments

those are all legitimate concerns user, why do you like being a corelet?

Lets be honest. 1 is more than enough.
all those shits (or equivalent) existed in '70s just fine without bloated amount of cores

>neural nets
Neural networks literally fell by the wayside for a few decades or more during the AI winter, because of a lack of computing power to effectively solve problems with NNs.

>blender rendering
Fully computer-animated film didn't exist in any appreciable form until the 80's.

it's
>muh embarrassingly paralllel math reserch applications
for me

More like 1,000 watts at load, considering the 7900X can hit 500w :^)

yeah but nowadays a singular core is much more powerful too

shit-tier bait

Crypto ransom ware just uses AES and will be faster than your drives.

make -j36 would be really good if you actuality install gentoo.

>muh server
I agree, google should run on a core 2 duo instead

>800MHz DDR3
Can you get more retarded?

if you buy more cores then you can sell them for more later on

buy more cores in bulk then sell individualy to make hiher profet margins

holy fuck, not even Prescott was that bad

>doesn't understand what D stands for in DDR
>hurr can you get more retarded
well, can you?

>"LOL AMD MOAR CORES AMIRITE XDD"
>Intel finally gets out of four cores

I literally seen this happen, I'm literally not making this up.
