If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Shit i want to have one linux monitor and one windows monitor so bad, but i just can't justify buying a new pc just for the uefi support when this one handles all the programming i do and the one game i play perfectly fine plus 80% of things i do require windows anyway..
fuck fuck FUCK

I can't seem to be able to compile my kernel on gentoo, it says "error reading elf file init/do_mounts.o" (Running 64bit gentoo)

Why do websites need JavaScript to login to websites and for transactions? Why can't I do all that using lynx?

What's the point of Linux when it can't even do basic things like displaying thumbnails when uploading?

Anyone else thought about going back to an older Ubuntu version because they werked and werked fine and are still mostly secure? I'm not sure but I think I will try 12.04 or maybe 14.04.

It's not even about systemd before you start that shit, it's just that they got the job done and stayed out of the way. Low resource hit too.

Allocating the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.

12.04 is end of life.

for server or desktop?
anyway, the lts (16.04) does still werk and is what you should go to if you want mostly secure. or go to any other distro that has a company behind it.

>go to any other distro that has a company behind it
the fuck is wrong with you

M-m-m-multishill!

Neat, windows 10 now natively supports Ubuntu, good bye shitty virtualbox and massive overhead, time to run that cunt on bare metal inside windows.
too bad it's currently only available in the new win 10 beta release

Enjoy your botnet.

Enjoy your botnet.

Thanks, i will indeed enjoy me perfectly stable, lag free and bug free linux experience on windows, because god knows that neckbeards can't give me any of those when running solely linux on bare metal. Microsoft actually had to step in and fix it for them. How embarrassing.

Enjoy your botner.

No you woun't. Ubuntu on Windows contains zero Linux.

sup nsa

the windows linux bash with all linux functionality including mounting and ssh and shit would disagree with you

...

Was 12.04 on gnome 2 or was that after the switch to unity?
because ubuntu mate is pretty much the same as when it was gnome 2.
As for resources, systemd uses less resources than the old init and upstart, so I don't know what you will gain by that.
The kernel is pretty stable and there has not been any "recent" changes that would mean it was faster 5 years ago, but it is certainly less secure.
There is a huge difference between windows and gnu/linux in this regard, with free software, you can pick the projects that you agree with rather than the version you least disagree with.
The LTS versions of ubuntu is recommended because you can keep them a for two years + some time to upgrade to the next.
The applications mostly only get security updates and the rest is pretty stable.
I just recently upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 because I didn't have time to upgrade.
But installing 14.04 today would be pretty dumb as 16.04 is out.

Have you tried ding a clean build?

Would probably be better to switch to a distro or DE that suits you better than to switch to something with unpatched security holes.

>Have you tried ding a clean build?
you mean doing make clean first then make? yeah, I've tried rebuilding @system

>yeah, I've tried rebuilding @system
I've EVEN tried*

So I tried KDE Neon, fucked around for a day or so. First I got tearing. I had to try to fix that shit using an AMD GPU. But then PC went to sleep and on wake up I got black screens. But then I disabled that shit, and at some point I left my monitor to turn off automatically thinking that at least that wouldn't fuck up. Nevermind, when I was back window decorations were showing artifacts and I had to restart the session. And then I had to restart my PC and my main monitor wouldn't turn on.

So I gave up on that shit.

And then I tried openSUSE tumbleweed and had none of these fucking problems. Not a single one. This has to be the GPU drivers or some shit like that.

nothing, i'm using arch but make no qualms about other distros being better for the task that user asked for.

This, or Void

Posting this on sqt but I didn't get an answer. If anyone here could help, I'd appreciate it.

I'm working on installing Arch for the first time and I've gone through most of it without any problems, but I can't get grub to install for whatever reason.

Right now i'm running 'grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=boot' and i'm getting an error that says 'grub-install: error: /boot doesn't look like an EFI partition'.

When I run 'lsblk -f' it says it is an EFI partition. Next I tried googling it where everyone said that my boot partition wasn't fat32, when I run 'parted /dev/sda print', though, it says that it's file system is fat32.

Any ideas before I blow my brains out? Thanks

Ok, not strictly gnu/linux related, but i firgured I'd get better answers here than at /sqt/. What do the cool boys use to browse with vim keybindings nowadays?

>go to install pentadactyl
>not supported on FF54
>go to install vimperator
>85% of the addon's page is in unrenderable utf characters, has like 150 users, don't want to get a virus
>see VimFX
>"We wanted to preserve the original experience as much as possible, as the likes of pentadactyl changed the browser too much for our tastes. However, we saw the vimium addon for chrome and thought that was exactly what we needed, so we recreated it for firefox." (not sic)
>they literally took the gimped chrome addon, which was only that way because chrome's extension support is shit, and decided it would be fantastic to have that on firefox for some reason
>see vimium
>it's literally a port of the vimium mentioned above (for no purpose whatsoever since vimfx exists)
>remember qutebrowser
>remember no extensions

What do
Can I get qutebrowser to have a setup somewhat equivalent to umatrix + ublock + smart https + canvas defender + a bunch of tweaks that significantly reduce my fingerprint?

Your efi partition shouldn't be mounted at /boot. That still be your boot directory with grub configs and stuff and passed to the --boot-directory argument. The partiton with efi firmware on it should be at /boot/efi or some shit.

>Can I get qutebrowser to have a setup somewhat equivalent to umatrix + ublock + smart https + canvas defender + a bunch of tweaks that significantly reduce my fingerprint?
Not at the moment. That stuff, and the framework to enable it, is still on the todo list.

I just installed Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 yesterday, and I have the issue of the screen being rotated 90 degrees to the right every time the system starts. I can set the orientation to normal with xrandr after login, but on the next reboot it will be rotated sideways. How can I fix this?

If i mount it to anything, but /boot I get the error: "grub-install:error : failed to get canonical path of '/boot/efi'"

Never mind, I created /boot/EFI instead of /boot/efi

Can't thank you enough, man

by rotating the monitor itself the right way.

If I wanted to go into GNU/Linux server administration and wanted certification, do I need certs like network+ or server+?

Hello,

What is the best command for updating a directory by using another directory as a reference? Would it be "cp -u * " ?

I had a boot issue involving GRUB loader. My Debian partition is on a separate drive from my Windows partition and GRUB wouldn't read Dev/sda at all. How do I ensure GRUB will take note of Windows when I run a fresh install for Debian? I don't recall having the option to select other available drives for GRUB loader.

I have a large amount of music stored as .flac files. Is there a script I can use on GNU/Linux to create a copy of all of them, and then compress those copies to opus at a good bitrate (assuming it's the best lossy compression to use now?). Is there a way to do this without having to retag everything, and while keeping the original flacs?

>can't even do basic things like displaying thumbnails when uploading?
Works on my machine, I use xfce and cinnamon.

GNU Networked Object Model Environment doesn't have this problem.

>good bye shitty virtualbox
You realize that acts as a sandbox, right?
>time to run that cunt on bare metal inside windows.
>bare metal inside windows
>bare metal
Like Xen? or KVM/Qemu? What about GPU acceleration?

>Roses are red, violets are blue
>Linux is just, a kernel for GNU
We gotta make this a copypasta

Enjoy your botnet.

Stop saying that, I use Windows 10 and I have nothing to hide. I pirate music and watch gay porn but that's the only thing I'm not proud of, so all this botnet fear-mongering is retarded. Fuck off or change your response.

How is Linux from Scratch? I've never used Linux before but LFS looks fun to play around with.

I hope you have good computer skills, if it's your first linux experience. It's essentially following an instruction booklet, so if you aren't stupid you won't have too much trouble. Just download the book and start figuring it out.
Also, I wouldn't recommend the systemd version (not because I hate systemd or anything, but because it's a little harder to set up and more likely to break).
The only real point of building LFS is the experience of installing it and gaining a little more knowlege about how the system works. Once you're done setting it up, the finished system isn't really usable for a desktop, and you should just use a proper distro instead.

you will want to do it recursively and with permissions copied too.

This Sometimes it doesn't pick up windows on first install but once logged in run `sudo update-grub` and it should find it.

Does LFS give you problems if you install it in a VM?

Okay. Thanks for replying man.

Is it true curl can be used as a web browser?

I use github.com/dopstar/ftransc
but there are probably more. Also I go to mp3 but I assume it supports opus too.

Although I wonder why you want things in opus, IFAIK that is only better for really low betrate audio like speech only, not music.

Thanks! I'll definitely give it a try to learn more about Linux.

Will probably just install gentoo or go full freedom once I'm done with it.

GNU/Linux*

I may need some help.
I bought a Raspberry Pi, and i decided that I'd host a SSH server on it. It'd be nice if I could use it remotely from my phone or something like that. I installed Arch onto the Pi, and configured sshd properly. It's running and listening to port 22, and currently allows password auth because I just wanna get it to work before I start messing with the keys. And surely I can access it from my home network, but my router is giving me some trouble. It's a Huawei B593s-22, and theres lots of guides for port forwarding available. I forwarded port 22 properly, but when I try to connect to my server, it refuses the connection. pls halp

PS, When connecting to a SSH server, you're supposed to connect to the external IP, right? The one the Pi got from dhcp, or the static one I manually set up. I've tried both of those, and I just wanted to make sure that I'm not trying to connect to a wrong address.

Why do people use Fedora?

Best Linux laptop? Thinking of getting a System76 lemur.

install gentoo

Firefox

system76 has bad build quality
get a thinkpad (preferably t420 or older, new ones have worse build quality), or a Dell XPS 13 or 15.

or get something with an i7 for cheaper amazon.com/Acer-E5-575G-57D4-15-6-Inches-Notebook-i5-7200U/dp/B01LD4MGR6/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1500094230&sr=1-6&refinements=p_4:Acer&th=1

Just get a Windows laptop and install Linux on it.

That does nothing.

your linux is broken

Type "cheat tar".

netcat: the TCP/IP swiss army knife

Just recently I found a new neat usage for it: sucklessly controlling mpd.

It's pretty easy (assuming openbsd-netcat):
nc localhost 6600
This connects to mpd and you get a promot where you can enter command like play, stop, etc. For a list of commands, type "commands".

It's also possible to send direct commands to mpd like this:
echo play | nc localhost 6600

Happy netcating.

how do you defend yourself against arch hackers?

theoretical, everyone loves 'what ifs' questions:

a country of 10 million people with an acceptable amount of natural resources, good agricultural production, and two cities above a million people suddenly gets taken over by a GNU/Linux friendly government for a 5 years mandate with the possibility of any number of reelections, and wants to get it's people off of digital proprietary software, including the government. the government wants to be able to protect it's own systems while giving its citizens the upmost personal privacy, but knows that the average computer users prefers convenience

how would said government go about achieving its goals?

Why do I have to disable DNSSEC on any distro running systemd-resolved to get DNS resolution working? How does shit like this make it to release?

I'm trying to capture audio with ffmpeg but when I run the command

Oh you were trying to download a cheat sheet

does anyone know anything about running a dial-up server?
I'd like to experiment with it for education purposes

noob having some trouble with i3 ricing
when i launch xterm with mod+enter, it doesnt obey xresources
why is this, and how do i fix it

try
ffmpeg -f alsa -i default output.wav

tried that but no good
looking here trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Capture/ALSA it wants me to use modprobe which I'm not sure what that does
