I'm trying to move away from google as far as possible. Got my protonmail set up already but I need a way to easily back up my contacts privately. How should I go about that on android? Been using a throwaway gmail account just for that but I want to stop with that as well.

Install Lineage OS and you wil be fine (if your phone is supported by Lineage OS)

yes but it's all open source. you can compile your own image if you want.
does this mean it's more secure? maybe. depending on how much code you're willing to audit.

Android is FOSS. You can install any custom ROM and have a completely free environment. Gapps have to be applied individually, they aren't bundled.

It's just slightly harder for normies since you can't use the google play store and many normie apps such as snapchat require google play services. Though fdroid is a good alternative for most apps

Lineage OS is opensource and is supposed to be independant to google (no data is sent to google)

You can't move away of google if you are still attached to google with your stock rom.

A basic, non google non apple phone is the only way to go. I recently got a Kyocera phone and am loving it.
