Trauma, trauma and also trauma with additional trauma.

Became a true great power and influential in world affairs.

Got our independace after 800 years of foreign ocupation and then liberated (annexed) Latvia from foreign forces.

The sun's shining down on these green fields of France; The summer wind blows, makes the red poppies dance. The trenches have vanished long under the plow; No gas and no barbed wire, no guns firing now. But here in this graveyard that's still No Man's Land The countless white crosses in mute witness stand To man's blind indifference to his fellow man. And a whole generation who were butchered and damned.

The zone in France is the proof of that.

Made us like Germans less.

People were happy that not many died.

the somme and gallipoli gave canada and the anzacs their national identity

>1914
>Romania small, Romania weak
>1919
>We big naw, we weak. Better invade Hungary and be bigger.

We ended up shipping tons of soldiers to go die in some Europe wide chimpout. Worst decision.

25% of the population was killed and for the following 50 years we became a gommie colony

You're stupid. You boded your time, made boatloads of cash selling weps to UK and France and then joined at the last second so you could slap germany on the butt and get a VIP spot at the winner's table

ww1 you mongoloid, poland came out of ww1 hueg

Wasn't that WW2?

oh right

sorry whenever I see the world "war" I instantly think of muh nazis

Nice cosplay

It didn't. Although it did hurt our economy.

Tom Brokaw can tell you all about it for 3 easy payments of $14.99

It destroyed Habsburg Monarchy and ushered in an era of nation states in this part of Europe. Czechoslovakia in our case.

My great grandfather was an officer on the Italian front. That's all I know.

>Newfoundland
30% of Newfoundland's male population was killed in the war
In one battle (Beaumont Hamel) only 695 of the 783 men in that battle were either wounded or killed.
Due to this France gave Newfoundland the land in which the battle took place, and is currently the largest piece of preserved battleground from ww1

Both happy because krautscum got btfo
But also sad because italy was a disaster after the war (well, even befor 2bh) and caporetto was our worst defeat ever

it didn't.

This and an explosion of radicalisms and futuristic ideas as the old order was torn down, both in thought, art and film.

Also first american influences, albeit with a strong german tint which made weimar culture probably quiete unique.

Wasn't the French army so pissed at one point they almost rebelled (understandably it was after a terrible fight)

It didn't, but it did make our politicians think that if they just didn't provoke Germany, they could stay out of all trouble like in WWI, which lead to the immediate surrender in WWII.

wuz actually soldiers n shiet?

christ that's depressing

>Using questionnaires filled out by doughboys as they left the Army, Gutièrrez reports that they were not cynical or disillusioned. They fought "for honor, manhood, comrades, and adventure, but especially for duty."

WW1 was basically just for giggles.

I've never been to war but I would imagine the experience would be something like this

Funny enough that's actually a light hearted look at WW1.

postin postwar art.

:'(

You should watch: All quiet on the western front

..

England did most the fighting.
Australia and maybe Canada and some blacks from carabiean in think helped a lot.
We made trenches also known as German reservation zones were they were hunted.
America came in to "save the day" half way through the war just like on WW2.

Thats my drunk remember.

So can it be agreed that WW1 was the worst war in human history to be a soldier?

While WW2 was the worst to be a civilian?

It didn't because we were neutral lmao

30 Year war was absolutely horrid for being a civilian and might compete.

The South African Regiment got mauled pretty badly at Delville Wood on the Western Front but we took control of modern day Namibia and kept it for decades afterwards.

God-tier poem.

>was the worst war in human history to be a soldier?
No these were en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman–Persian_Wars
>One has the impression that the blood spilled in the warfare between the two states brought as little real gain to one side or the other as the few meters of land gained at terrible cost in the trench warfare of the First World War.

we became a globalist shithole run by the military industrial complex

The war pretty much triggered modern art.

I cried to that song once. Felt good.

Actually the later part was more WWII, which was the result of the first part kind of.

They went on strike, 68 out of the 110 divisions of french army and many innocent soldiers were executed "for example".
The Germans didnt want to stop the war anyway.
It gave birth to quite a few songs and is one of the first symptoms of the post war pacifism and anti militarism

Another competitor for worst civilian experience could be the Second Anglo-Boer war. The British placed the vast majority of the civilian population (basically only women, children, and old men, as almost every man of fighting age was out with a gun) into concentration camps which were atrociously managed. Lots of disease and starvation.

Typical desu.

Well the World Wars are essentially what made us into the global superpower we are today. So I guess you could say it indirectly helped give us our smug sense of superiority.

Also I like how many Europeans apparently think an actual picture with black soldiers is somehow WE WUZ. Yes, Euros, black people didn't exist until the 70s when they magically appeared out of the ether and started appearing in blaxploitation movies and making hip-hop.

>This perfectly crafted bait.

It was only the Russian who made that comment. Calm down

Oh and if any of you wanna check out one of the most relevant South Africans ever, go on wikipedia and find Jan Smuts

>He was the only man to sign both of the peace treaties ending the First and Second World Wars.

>Germany: completely fuck ass mad
>France: so scarred that they disintegrated into warfearing pussies
>Britain: bled out and planted seeds for the empire's disintegration
>Austria: irrelevant
>Russia: fucking gommies
>USA: stronk new kid on the block but still kind of a shutin

That's leaving out a bit of the truth. As soon as the Boers started losing the 2nd war they went full-on war criminal by today's standards. The treatment if Boers by the Commonwealth was reactionary, caused by that.

>he believes in genocides

This tbqh

Examples of war criminality from the Boers? They waged a guerilla war yes, and I'm pretty certain they would not have been much for taking prisoners, but it's not like they needed to extort supplies from civilians. On the other hand the British depopulated two countries.

>colonial troops are allowed to go roaming the train station
>colonial troops are allowed to mingle with regular troops
>colonial troops not being subjected to a harsh treatment in ww1, except french colonials

This re-writing of history aint serving anyone any good. The blacks and arabs werent given equal treatment. Regular british troops refused to serve side by side with colonials. The british high command wanted to integrate their colonial troops, but were refused for fear of regular troop riots and disobedience. Only the french military had most proper treatment of other than whites.

>le Swedish drink meme

That one slav

Haha we sure showed them Frenchie! :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

In contrast to all the other euro countries WWI was seen as the on of the last normal wars. A war where soldiers fought and died like in the old days no silly ideologies that turned professional armies on unarmed civilians. Sad thing is our country was divided and often Poles had to kill other Poles just because they were born on the other side. Though I know Hungarian/Austrian commanders almost never sent Polish troops in if they knew they would face Poles.

>WE

Do you really want to know? First World War destroyed the Russian Empire, the civil war has created the Soviet Union.

The camps starved and died from lack of disease because Boer guerrillas stole the food, or disabled railway supply lines, or attacked overland relief convoys.
And there's a big difference between "guerrilla warfare" for your independence and the attempted murder of every non-Boer or Adrican you can find.
Americans waged a guerrilla war, but still followed rules of common engagement, like treatment of prisoners or the illegal targeting if enemy officers on land. Boers were attempting to exterminate anything in red from overseas indiscriminately. They also put weapons in the hands of women and younger teens, that forced Britain's hand t.bh

It really didn't.
The civil war we were having at the time however did, it gave us (the base for) our current constitution.

Landsknechte pillages the native ones.
I did not implie that only foreign troops did shit, german mercenarys even fought for the swedes and any army which could give them an income in general during the end of the war, because the alternative would have been to starve or die of illness.
The peasants were terrorized by foreigners and native soldiers, other peasants whose crops were burned and plagues. It could happen that Landsknechte raped and pillaged for the luls, it could happen that civilians ambushed soldiers and killed them out of revenge or because they needed their stuff.
It was like Mad Max-medieval edition.

Well, people say that America gave us US citizenship so that they could throw us into the war first. I'm kinda thankful that they did.

You want Mad Max from the 30-year war? Meet the Lisowczycy(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisowczycy) also called the Raider of the Apocalypse/Lost Men. They went beyond the call of duty and killed and burned everything. They were so bad kings wrote letters begging to recall them.

We got super nationalistic during the war, but almost immediately after the war was over we really stopped giving a shit about what was happening in Europe and decided to focus on ourselves.

We recieved quite a few immigrants.

Is this bait? You're saying that there's a difference between killing enemy soldiers and... killing enemy soldiers? I mean, anyone in a British military uniform is a pretty valid target when you're fighting a war against Britain, and it's kind of odd to call someone out on "ungentlemanly conduct" when you've declared their right to exist null and void over what was, essentially, a minor immigration issue. In other words, attacking without just cause. And it's not like they were creeping into camps at night and stabbing officers in their sleep. I'm really not trying to have an argument here but it's a bit of a stretch to say that the boers were the bad guys here. Especially to call it their fault that the women and children were starving after the British burnt half the farms and then put them in concentration camps. And by no means were the British trying their best when it came to the camps. Read an article or a book on them sometime. 26 000 boer women and children died there, as well as literally uncounted numbers of black natives. Just look up the Fawcett commission for details of the conditions and try to say that the British were not horrifically at fault. True, it was necessary to win the war, but that makes it no less of a crime, nor any more justified than the war itself.

we went as British subjects
we lost something like quarter of the population
we came home as New Zealanders
