This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.
Hoping to get my watch in the mail today. I wish pic was related.
Chase Green
>Lange can't even screw in screws evenly That seriously looks sloppy.
Parker Perry
that would piss me off with how much that thing costs considering AP managed it on the royal oak in the 70s
Aaron Gray
They screw in the screws to a certain point to tune the repeater gong. Can't just hammer them on full torque and expect the thing to sound good or at all.

Get one that is between 1996 and 2006 with the 1120 movement. Earlier movement had a flaw and the newer co-axial is questionable.

i have one of these. keeps worse time than my better mechanicals. fucking awful chink shit
Isaac Evans
What are the best entry level mechanical (manual winding or automatic, but preferably the latter) watches?
Robert Nguyen
Watches made in ussr
Logan Carter
one of these. the one pictured has a custom crown and bezel though (its mine)
Brandon Perez
is that a specific vintage, or one of the newer ones?
Sebastian Gray
Bottom of barrel is a Seiko 5. Automatic 7s26 but no hand winding or hacking. Can get those starting at about $60
Also there is Vostok Amphibia. You get hand winding with these and a waterproof diver. These movements are not as accurate from my experiences but for about $65-$80 hard to beat.
Some slightly higher end Seiko 5's come with the 4r36 movement, which has hand winding and hacking. Good movement. These can be found for maybe around $150.
Entry level true Seiko diver is the SKX. It unfortunately has the 7s26 movement so not hand winding or hacking, but you do get a legit 200m diver with better quality control compared to the Vostok. Can get these for about $190-$200
Entry level swiss movement would have to be a Hamilton Khaki. Got a reliable ETA movement and can be had for low to mid $300 if I recall.
Some might not consider this entry level but I think the Seiko SARB033 is a great choice to get after you try out a Seiko 5 and like it. For the money you get a crisp design with great finishing and a good movement. I think it is the most versatile watch on my list Also mid to low $300.
Josiah Bennett
or alternatively, one of these
Alexander Miller
Also forgot to mention the Hamilton khaki also had a manual wind only version. Best entry level swiss on the new market if you don't mind hand wind only and can be had for about $260.
Joseph Nelson
i'd recommend you not to fall for the SKX meme. its got the same movement as seikos at 25% the price and its lacking handwind and hacking, so you have to wave your arm around like a spastic to wind it from stopped
Thomas Sanders
this is new. got it from meranom.com. its the 090059
Carson Morales
I believe that i will go with the vostok amphibia, Are there any parts that i should replace with custom parts, or is it alright factory new?
Landon Carter
You will need a new strap/bracelet/band. The stock one is absolute garbage.
Kevin Butler
definitely order from meranom. add watch to cart, add "changing spare parts" to cart and add a stainless steel crown to cart and add in the notes section of the order that you want them to install the crown
if you want a custom bezel, then get it aftermarket from ebay and install it yourself
Lincoln Sullivan
I was thinking about getting a bund strap for ussr"ness" as well as the extra leather. what are the best straps for this kind of watch?
Benjamin Lopez
Standard crown is absolutely fine, but also just order a new model number (pic) and it will come with a milled crown anyways as well as a steel bezel.
Aaron Garcia
>not appreciating the horology
Sebastian Cooper
Please don't buy a bund strap

Alright I've got my vintage seiko time to move onto vintage omega. I've seen quite a few kicking around in here. What is the caliber I should be looking for?
Oliver Myers
A 564 is goat. This is a 613. 601/613 is essentially a manual wind version of the 563 series and is also good. 321 or 1045 for chronographs.
Blake Morales
>leather on diver Apply yourself.
Ayden Morales
if i wouldn't wear it, i don't care. i don't get excited over ferraris either, i get excited over affordable shitboxes that i can go fast in for cheap.

While Girard Perregaux's tri-axial implementation is really pretty, I prefer Jaeger Le Coultre's dual axis gyrotourbillon design and 3D hairspring for its more functional orientation.

useless complications have nothing to do with taste user. its about showing who has the biggest watch penis to your watch penis friends
Kayden Morgan
Agreed on pretty much all counts. Don't forget that the 75x is a day/date version of the 56x. Also, while I'm partial to the 1045, I would avoid both it and the 321 unless you are prepared to spend on its upkeep as vintage chronographs are not exactly cheap to maintain.
Elijah White
HNNNNG it's finally arrived! >Tfw only got to try it on and then had to put it back in its box until my birthday

I just switched out my strap on this for a Hirsch, really ups the feel of it - I find the holes on the stoc leather make the watch sit outside of my wrist bone. Would recommend changing it
Noah Wilson
Behead those who put leather straps on divers.
Brandon Moore
I don't think there's really any bad ones from the 60s. My watch has a 561 which is very highly regarded. 561 is the automatic chronometer date version but there's also the 564 which adds a quickset date (you never realize how much watchmaking has advanced and how convenient quickset date it until you own a watch without it). The 551 is the same movement with no date. There's also the Seamaster movements which were not chronometer certified and came with or without date or with and without automatic winding.
I think they're all very closely related. Back then automatic winding and date displays were sort of premium upgrades so the movements mix and match those features on top of the same base.

honestly of any kind. i want something generally respectable but in my preference something minimal. i like shit like this, but it reminds me too much of a womens watch so im trying to see all the options
