>go visit my parents >have my Thinkpad with GNU/Linux on it >father uses Windows >sit next to him, use the computer to look up a place to go >him: wow, things are really fast on Linux. Wish I could give it a try but I need Microsoft Office for my complex office needs that other solutions can't meet >he leaves his computer on a day later >go check software >office last used: mid 2014
I didn't ask him to switch, but: Why do people always bring up muh office? For most normies LibreOffice is enough to distribute documents as pdfs and then there's Google docs if you're not botnet concerned. Office is the most retarded excuse not to use GNU/Linux in most cases
Easton Cooper
You should be grateful that they even know what linux is. People just ask me stupid questions like >user why is your laptop sooooo old? why dont you buy a new one? >why does your windows look so weird?? >and where's your mouse??
Easton Ramirez
it just means they're unfamiliar with the software basically. I put libreoffice on my moms computer and she recently asked for office beacuse of what I assume are compatibility issues. I'm guessing she isn't saving in the right format but I'm not sure.
Jackson Walker
>beacuse of what I assume are compatibility issues. The fun part is, that if you use both the way they are meant to be without weird hacks, they're mostly compatible. But if you hit enter 13 times to put something on the page footer, the other office software might misrender it.
David Reyes
Try to open in libreoffice a password protected presentation which was made in MS Office.
Jaxon White
There are a LOT of compatibility issues with word processors. Even ms word on mac fucks up formatting badly. Bottom line, If you're editing documents with ms word with a group of people, use the same version of word, on the same OS. That's just the way it is.
I tried editing a 50MB report in libre office for some work shit.. Bad idea. The resulting formatting came out FUCKED up. The vector drawings were in all the wrong places on every page, wrong line thickness, overall paragraph formatting was just shit.
Libreoffice will perform just fine if you're writing a document to be exported to PDF, or working with other people in libreoffice, odt format. Fucking forget about collaborating with other people using ms word / libreoffice.
The BEST way to collaborate is with latex, but not everyone is willing to learn. For now, use the same software as everyone else you're working with.
Charles Moore
>had a "friend" actually talk shit to me for "not using what everyone else in the world uses" >had no clue google and literally almost everything else runs off of linux >actually tried to belittle me for not using windows
Lincoln Reed
He probably meant the Microsoft Office suite as a whole, including Excel and that other one who's name is eluding me but it helps you maintain flowcharts and solve other enterprise-type/small business data issues. I'm a total freetard, but it would be ignorant of me to say that some of the software on there isn't incredibly useful--not to mention fairly accessible from a layman perspective. And I can't really imagine a free alternative that solves all the problems Office does, actually. Except for Word. Word is worthless in the context of LATEX and all the autismo FOSS text editors.
How the fuck is cross compatibility between word processors so fucking awful? Not even IDE's. Word processors. They should make, like, a universal standard or something and follow that.
Oh, wait . . .

>Try to open in libreoffice a password protected presentation which was made in MS Office. nice try, nigerian
Austin Sanders
>go check software >office last used: mid 2014 You can't tell when a program was last used, dipshit.
I hate when wannabe fiction writers come to Sup Forums.
Thomas Anderson
Office is legit a million times better. Faster, much better spellchecking etc.Libreoffice and Google docs also doesn't format things properly. My professors want me to turn things in as docx and that is super clean if you write it in office but tends to get fucked in everything else.
John Richardson
you can VM office
Jaxon Fisher
I am just sick of people like you and your stupid hate boner for this imagined hoarde of tech illiterates who actively antagonize different things like they're the majority. They're the minority. If you encounter a person like that, it's because they're a shitty and ignorant person; not just because they're ignorant of technology.
You don't have to be a software engineer to have an open mind, and it's condescending and elitist of you to think that people should just automatically know obscure things that aren't even common in the enterprise or schools beyond specialists.
Did it maybe occur to you that people maybe aren't interested in learning all that shit? Instead of being such a shitlord, why don't you just be fucking patient with them, like a functioning human being. Have some empathy. Are you even capable of empathy? Or are you literally autistic? Have some self awareness.
None of what you're whining about ever happened to you. At least, it never happened to you in the way you described it, because you're an ignorant, histrionic prick who exaggerates bullshit on the internet to validate yourself as an authority on arbitrary bullshit. It's like when my 11yo niece thinks she's better than my 5yo nephew. Yeah, of course you are. Does that even matter? Does it matter that you get better grades then the kid who probably has ADD, who sits in the corner eating paste and picking his nose? Because, if you compare yourself to the kid whose parents are divorced and who lives off of saltines, that's very, very sad.
Nathaniel Walker
Yes you can, asshole.
Ryder Smith
No, you can't fuckwad.
Juan Miller
if you use linux, you are poor.
Xavier Watson
How's the wife's son?
Tyler Martin
I know this is really obvious bait but I genuinely feel dirty when I first buy a computer and it has Windows on it. It makes me feel really ghetto.
Leo Wood
>Uses the number of routers running a router OS to justify his use of it as his desktop OS.
Eli Bell
thats why a MAC exists.
MAC is premiumware.
Jose Bell
fucking idiot
Jack Hernandez
I actually used a Mac Mini for a while. That was the reason I first switched to GNU/Linux, actually. I discovered one day that the drivers for my cdr just didn't work anymore. A few months later my soundcard didn't work, and so on and so on. It wasn't a hardware issue, because GNU/Linux worked perfectly, MacOS just has shitty driver support in general--even for their own products.
Carson White
You can though
Brody Cook
>buying prebuilts ew
Gavin Cooper
Formatting often gets fucked when switching between Word and Libreoffice
Blake Morris
LibreOffice is utter shit. It barely works with any document that isn't .rtf. MS Office does so much more and often better. Quit supporting shit software and start another Sup Forums project for a superior alternative.
Luke Gray
>start another Sup Forums project
LibreOffice already has a set of logos.
Ethan Young
well technically the os on my computer is a server os and it is functioning entirely as a server. Im in a kvm vm running an embedded version of windows.. so if you want to talk shit then talk shit about my using cash register windows
Kayden Flores
>this open source software is shit >let's fragment the market even more instead of improving what we have
