dont do it
don't do it you dont want to and 13" is fucking small
Why? It's your money to spend as you see fit.
I have an XPS 15, I think the CPU is located at the upper left hand side where a laptop cooling pad can't reach.
Otherwise its pretty good if you uninstall W10.
I like things that are small though. 13.3" is a pretty great screen size; I'd even be happy with as small as 12.5".
I would consider getting the developer edition, but it doesn't seem any cheaper, so no reason I can see not to get one with win and then just put linux on it.
Thanks for the attempt, but I need reasons/alternatives!
You're no help!
I will just say this, if you are planning to run anything intensive on the XPS you will have no way of getting rid of the fact that your CPU will be at a constant 70-80 degrees for the entire duration of whatever you are running simply because of the CPU's placement.
This might come back to bite you in the ass if you are planning to hold on to it for some time.
weights too little girls will laugh at you and call you a cardio bunny
Why not a used elitebook instead? That's what I got and it's been fantastic so far.
>coil whine in some units that dell doesn't consider a defect
>shit keyboard
Buy a used thinkpad
Hmmm... That's kind of concerning. I've also heard complaints about coil whine. I'd like to get a laptop that's relatively powerful but quiet; my old HP Folio 13 (what I'll be upgrading from) was great for what it was, but its fans were LOUD.
>I'd like to get a laptop that's relatively powerful but quiet
The XPS is really quiet even when under stress, the built-in fans did a good job in keeping the temperature acceptable (low 50 degrees) for every part of the laptop (except for the CPU) while emitting very little noise. I would have really love this laptop if not for the CPU heat issue which I have stressed a lot of times.
The keyboard is acceptable and is slightly better than most laptop keyboards I have had, the only other major issue I had was with the built-in wifi software which can be easily solved.
I would advise you to get more hands-on reports before buying, the un-mitigatable heat issue is really triggering though. Maybe you would have better luck with other brands.
I actually swore off Dell 8 or 9 years ago when I had an xps m1330, which had a GPU that got so hot it would break the motherboard. So I'm pretty wary of heat issues, especially from Dell.
Kind of too bad because I love the form-factor of the xps 13.
Get a Lenovo T570 or an X270 if you're looking for that smaller size. I love mine(T570). Posting from it right now.
i own one
the keyboard is fucking garbage, and both the trackpad and screen hinge are misaligned
also the trackpad broke in like six months
then i bought a thinkpad x220 and i'm still using it
This this and this.
I also own one, keyboard is a hunk of shit and the default wifi card is terrible. Linux support was difficult to get working, and the trackpad feels like a cheap macbook's. Only thing I like is the small screen bezel.
Have an x201 and an x220 and those are a million times better.
I am I totally forgot about the trackpad because it's genuinely one of the worst in history and I never touched it unless absolutely necessary. It's really awkward when you try to click on something and it thought you wanted to enlarge or something, really fucking annoying. I have a wireless mouse at work and a normal mouse at home just for this reason.
you were adopted.
First off, the processor is placed out of cooling reach, and that i5 will be heating. get an i7's with an ssd, they're cheap nowadays.
i have one
keyboard is really bad
trackpad gets stuck in scrolling mode and you literally cant move the cursor without sperging out
it gets really warm even when only watching amine
screen is nice though and battery life is good
charger cable and brick are also really neat (brick is really small)
its not worth it though
get a x220 instead
Go for the Lenovo Thinkpad 13 instead.
It costs less, has the same specs and has a much better keyboard.
>Is Dell's QC still shit, or has that changed?
He said a Laptop, not a desktop.
>1366x768
You should buy the superior XPS15
Thicc and heavy.
coil whine. get a x270
what are good quadcore laptops Sup Forums?
Hey get the 2 in 1 instead, it's nicer
Go to Best buy and see if you like it, try the gestures
Not the G1-G3 840-850s. I'd look into those if you're going to go the HP route. They run for less than 300, which is a ridiculous bargain.
I personally bought a t440s two years ago and upgraded it myself. Touch screen/t450s trackpad, etc. Best purchase I've ever made.
Not touchscreen, stupid autocorrect. Got the 1080p ips display.
The bezels aren't flush with the screen on the non touch model so all kinds of junk gets stuck under them and they're a pain to clean.
Have fun with the broken automatic brightness.
The touchpad is terrible. Half of the time it registers a single click as a double click. The coil whine is also loud enough to hear in a quiet room. I'm not sure because I have the QHD model, but I think the FHD screen has some issues with brightness control.
Whats the battery life like?
I need to decide between t560 vs t570 with largest battery they have?
got one as well, no issues with trackpad or coil whine or whatever, but gotta say that the keyboard is indeed fucking terrible
coil whine is way less noticeable on the latest bios update
If someone offered you free xps or its price in cash, what would you choose? If its cash, than you should not buy it.
Find some used i7 quad laptop with a quadro 2000m for like 400.
If you'd rather run around without dedicated gpu for twice the price go ahead faggot, no one's judging you out loud.
I need a laptop for uni, literally to type on and has to be light, no watching shit / playing vidya.
My friend suggested the Dell....
Any suggestions
Wait for the Asus zenbook pro 550
too bad you need to run windows to update bios
youre retarded
if i got the chance to pick the cash equivalent of an item id always take the cash
Used x220
Wait for raven ridge APUs.
if I show up at the business meeting with a thinkpad I will get crucified they demand polished products like this dell and macs what do?
Get the latitude 5470/5480, perfect combination of performance, 14" 1080p ips screen, and a little thinner than an x series thinkpad (2cm)
> talk me out of it Sup Forums
No Trackpoint.
\thread
>I'm a manchild who needs to be talked out of buying stuff that will financially destabilize me/so I don't have a shit load of stuff I don't use
learn some self control faggot
Nobody should have to talk you out of shit
Probably the same batteries but kaby lake is more efficient
XPS 13
Just fucking get it, it's great
I have a XPS 13 with 3200x1800, i7 and all that shit...
- no trackpoint
- shitty touchpad
- broke after 5 days, took them around a month to fix
- RAM is solderen (single point of failure)
- GPU performance is shitty
- Headphone Mic doesn't work on Linux (9350)
- Most updates require full Win7+ OS, FreeDOS won't suffice
- no display ports, USB-C adapters are expensive af
- shitty support (Germany)
- CPU makes noises on load. (whistling on scrolling)
Nothing says more HIGH QUALITY than replacing your mainboard twice when repairing.
ridge regression
I love my xps 15 9550
ok Sup Forums do i get an xps15 or something else? the only laptops with comparable specs that i know of are
gigabyte aero 15
razer blade
asus zenbook pro ux550 (not out yet)
OP here. A ~$1000 purchase will in no way result in any financial instability for me (I have a six figure salary, retirement accounts with a few hundred grand in them, own my own house, etc etc).
I buy laptops pretty infrequently; the 'talk me out of it' is more about getting all the faults of the xps 13 out in the open.
Strongly considering the x270 now as well, but it's not much of a looker. Also looking at HP Spectre 13; anything to be aware of on it?
Doesn't the 13 have a coil whine issue or something?
Can you do bios upgrades on linux on the XPS?
Why wouldn't you be able to? BIOS updates don't need any OS to do.
get a samsung laptop if you want luxury and that money range or get an ayymd luxury laptop, remember kids dell laptops 60 percent of the time break fucking easliy.
Uh, it's a Dell...
Confirmed not using an xps
How is a thinkpad not a looker my man
It's a clean boxy laptop
go for the x270. or better yet X1 Carbon.
xps has coil whine and a comically bad keyboard.
hp spectre's are good if you want the 2 in 1, probably the best 2 in 1 on the market. but the non touch 'skinniest laptop in the world' one is a meme. It has a tiny battery and won't keep itself cool.
X1 carbon is the best ultraportable on the market. XPS 13 is probably top 5 if you can get past the shitty keyboard.
All that awesomeness completely ruined by the webcam placement. I wouldn't spend a dime on that. But if you don't use it, great.
well, you know that a MacBook Pro is the only answer.
You don't want a 15W CPU.
You don't want that plastic design, thickness, loudness, etc.
You don't want 1080p in 2017, that's a small window on my IPS 13" Retina screen, and yes, you can see pixels on that.
You don't want Windows.
You don't want that charger.
You want Apple's build, design, keyboard, OS, trapped, screen, SSD, Touch Bar, ports, etc.
Buy an x220 and use the rest of the money you would have spent to go on holiday. You'll probably end up doing nothing with the XPS you couldn't do with the x220, and the differnece certainly isn't worth the same as a flight to the other side of the world. Weeb it up, go to Japan.
>x220
bahha that shit is barely better than my shitty ass acer chromebook
I got a XPS 15
Love it
The minimal bezel makes me diamonds every time I look at my laptop
Nope, I'm not gonna pay the apple tax for something that is less functional than a PC equivalent and that makes me look like a tool to boot.
thanks for your pointless contribution
Semi related, i have an xps 15. Is minor screen flexing generally bad? The screen on the xps is thin and i hate opening it.
Friend has it with Ubuntu on it and it's nice. I got a surface book instead because I like 2 in 1s more but if you definitely only want a laptop xps is a good one if you're wanting to run Linux
laptop screens are designed to flex. premium ones anyway.
>if you're wanting to run Linux
It gets the battery life cut in half (even with TLP and powertop) and USB-C is shit with Linux currently.
t. guy that hasn't used this laptop
Proper power configuration got me almost 20 hours of battery on linux.
The laptop sucks shit otherwise though.
How is the USB-C support? Will connecting it to an external display be a pain?
13" is too small, but xps are pretty solid for the money.
someone help me out here
You want the developer edition. If not you will have to swap the wifi card.
Do you plan on doing anything with it that requires the hardware? If not buy a used laptop and enjoy the money you saved. If you plan on using it for media consumption, programming or for word processing and whatever else you'll need it for at college, you could buy a cheap thinkpad, x220 or x230, a nice 1440p monitor and still have plenty cash left over that you can use for whatever else you need/go a vacation. x220 and x230 can playback 1440p video with no issues so chances are that setup would be more than enough for your needs, can't be sure though.
