So my company is basically giving me a blank check for me to buy a personal laptop for me to buy for CUDA calculations and travel. I am wondering if the upgrade from i5-7200u to i7-7500u is worth it? Oh and recommend a laptop with a generic gpu. I was leaning towards the new xiaomi fingerprint models since notebookcheck gave it a 85%.

>blank check
you'd be daft to not buy a maxed out Surface Book

>I am wondering if the upgrade from i5-7200u to i7-7500u is worth it?

If your task is bottlenecked on number of CUDA cores then it'll make no difference.

>If your task is bottlenecked on number of CUDA cores then it'll make no difference.
Well the the cpu change is for just plain performance. all my cuda will be done on the gpu so I will not have a problem. I am wondering if the performance boast from i5 to i7 is worth the money atm.

The model you posted is the XPS13 which doesn't have the dGPU. Get the 15, it's literally the best laptop out there. Just make sure to stalk Dell support until you have the perfect machine, I'm case you run into problems

Ask them to get you a external gpu enclosure as a investment for the company and get a 1080ti

buy the most expensive workstation you can find.

$3,000 minimum

Surfacebook

Problem is that 3000 usd laptop is going to weigh a ton. I don't want to be carrying this shit around.

That.... actually sounds like a good idea

You guys keep saying surfacebook but a xiaomi air costs 600 less than that and has a better gpu and cpu. So it seems to be overpriced junk. I don't care if it is a 2-1, I just need a laptop not a tablet

pic

>for work
>wants chink shit
Just get a maxed out DELL XPS 15

Or a maxed out DELL precision 7720 if you are really hardcore.

>Used Chink shit for 3 years and somehow outlasted a mac
I know mac has gone down the shitter recently

>what is onsite warranty
This is a must for work. The chinks won't provide.

Or you can just get a laptop with good build quality? Doesn't have to be chink shit. Macbooks break from nearly everything.

absolutely do not listen to these two

I just said DELL XPS or Precision. Or you can get a ThinkPad X1 Carbon if you want lightweight, or P51/P71 for max performance desktop replacement.

there is noway to tell who u are... could have just been a naysayer. Boss did recommend an XPS or a Zenbook so I might look into it.

I am definitely not. We had surfacebooks at the company and they are ok at best.

Wait for Asus UX550 if possible.

Forget ASUS, they don't have any proper premium warranty.

>proper premium warranty.
look

If you want a xiaomi air, wait a bit till August 1st. The new Xiaomi air is coming out with a i7-7500u processor and a mx150 gpu.

Obviously, good build quality is one thing. But what if shit happens? Would you prefer to have your WORK DEVICE fixed under 48 hours, or weeks? The choice is clear.

if you are competent and know how to use google. You can fix it under 24. Also the surfacebook is impossible to open so don't bother.

Why the fuck would I bother when there is a warranty? Are you people really employed or just daydreaming?

>Why the fuck would I bother when there is a warranty? Are you people really employed or just daydreaming?
Because I already know how to fix laptops? Also employed ppl are not exactly incompetent, I mean how do you think they got employed in the first place?

inb4 Sup Forums convinces you to get a giant gaming Laptop and you get laughed at and fired

Is this a small company or what? I would fucking yell at people if they were trying to fix their laptops instead of just getting a replacement from me and doing actual work.

Top of the line XPS15 and a Thundermeme eGPU.

Told him already but he just keeps shilling the xiaomeme

i7 vPro will be great

?
>there is noway to tell who u are... could have just been a naysayer. Boss did recommend an XPS or a Zenbook so I might look into it.
We got IT over here that knows how to open up and fix laptops... If I broke it at home I could just probably fix it myself as well.... They are not difficult. You make it sound like you are defusing a bomb.

We manage a fleet of about 18000 laptops, and around 12000 desktops, so can't really fix them one by one ourselves.

Thinkpad p51/p50/p70. All of them have newer quadros, which are basically made for professional computing.
Also, Thinkpad t470p with gtx 940mx.

honestly, if you are actually using cuda, get either a workstation lenovo (p71, p51) or a macbook pro and hook it up to an external gpu via thunderbolt.

You seem to have already made your mind up on the xiaomeme before making the thread. Why ask here?

Except I didn't? and I wasn't half those guys. Also how is talking about how shitty macs are and build quality>warranty and repairing your own comp the same thing as "making up my mind">
