Bought a new ThinkPad (x230 but with x220 keyboard)
Windows 8.1 preinstalled
shift+3 printed a £ instead of #
shift+2 printed a " instead of @
Changed windows language settings and fixed that

None of the Fn keys did anything. Most of the top keys either did nothing or had weird outputs (Delete acted like Home, PgUp and PgDn did nothing, PrtSc did nothing)

Do I just assume that the refurbished isntalled a new windows 8.1 and didn't bother to install specific drivers? Can't check right now since installing win10

Trying to hook up an LCD TV to my T430 (intel graphics) over VGA. Laptop recognizes tv but not vice versa. It displayed the desktop once with like 1200x800 res but with 1080p it's always blackscreen.

You have to download the Lenovo software thingy (Lenovo solution centre or something) from their website to make the Fn keys work

I think the BIOS has more settings, I don't recall. If I were you I'd try with a live linux distro just in case.

Same shit happened on my late W7. My friend had it too. It's not limited to just the HDD; the ODD also gets it. Intermittent. Basically the disk is either fucked or in case of a CD/DVD. the ODD is.

Where can you find which codecs you can encode/decode with newer AMD or Nvidia GPUs, particularly Pascal and Polaris (I assume Vega is too new for this)?

But it only shows Quadro and Tesla cards. As I understand Geforce cards use the same GPUs (e.g. GP104 in both Quadro P5000 and GTX 1080/1070), but idk if the support is the same.

Also why can GP104 decode VP8 while GP102 (the supposedly better chip) can't?

Yeah the brand I work in has the same issue. If a user gives me the serial for a 5-11 year old machine you'll find that no complaints have ever been logged. Instead with the newer ones I get reports within the first week saying that shit happens out-of-the-box. Windows Server is actually pretty nice for desktop OS. At the other hand, you will have to configure almost everything manually but since you mentioned training for possible jobs...

I have a Kingston flash drive that I made bootable with a .iso of Debian. I didn't need that anymore so I formated it using the 'Disks' program in Ubuntu (pic related). I formatted it and selected the MBR/DOS partitioning. Now it's empty but Ubuntu will not show it in the Files program when I insert it. What did I do wrong? Please answer.

C++ is a just so big. the language itself is vast not to mention the C++11 and C++14 addons.

i tend to like simpler languages with a large standard library instead of complex languages. something like C, Kotlin, Rust and Python over C++, Java or Obj-C.

you clean the drive and set mbr/dos partition table just like on your pic, and then you add a new partition (with the + belove the "Volumes") and choose its format as fat32 or ntfs.

fat is fat32, you have also ntfs, in order to have exfat you need to install exfat-fuse package.

I made a dumb and broke my BIOS while flashing it yesterday (I did it from Windows, I already got chastised by someone in /pcbg/ for it), now it won't even POST. I've researched a few methods I could try first (seeing if it'll recover from a USB, clearing CMOS), but should I also look to see if a local computer store has a ROM burner? I've seen that brought up a few times, and would like to give that a shot so that I can avoid replacing the MOBO.

i've recently built a pc with the ryzen 5 1600, 16 gbs of ram and an mlc ssd and installed windows 10 ltsb n 2016 on that
after the installation was complete, the pc was running pretty quick, but now after i've installed stuff like foobar2000, pale meme, and all the gpu drivers and whatnot, the pc is kinda laggy
for example, the task manager refershes the view once every 8 seconds or so, that is despite setting the update frequency to high
when i close the task manager, it turns white and stays this way for some 10 seconds not responding
what could it be?

OK so here's what's going on. Pulled an 1TB Seagate out of an old computer and it appeared to be working fine. So I formatted it to use as a storage drive then all of a sudden my comp started going slow?

Then I went through disk part commands and cleaned the entire drive of all partitions, then redid it as a new drive and shit was still slow.

I have ran scans to see if it's failing or if any errors, and it passes everything with ease. Checked boot order on BIOS and everything is still in order.

But yea, hard drive is making lots of noise like it's constantly working, despite nothing being on it. And comp is booting slower. I have no idea what's going on...

I'm drawing a complete blank at how to implement user privileges tho. All the tutorials and examples I've seen only deal with completely cutting off or completely authorizing access to a user, never to discriminate which resources he should have access to.

Based on what I know this should be what the scopes do, but I don't fully understand how to use them, and I'm not even sure that's what I want to do.

Does anybody have a link to an article or something that could help me click on this issue ?
