I had a number of sensitive files I needed to get rid off.
Deleted them. Used bleach bit to over write free space. Decided to test how well this had worked. I was able to recover the files fully.
Deleted the files. Filled HD up with rubbish till full. Deleted it. bleach bit to overwrite free space.
Still able to recover original files.
Use windows cypher to overwrite free space, then use another program to wipe free space with 7 different passes.
Still able to recover original files.
What gives>? Why is this still possible? This is on Win10 btw.
Kayden Turner
That's a feature all OS's have. Linux even uploads all your files to WikiLeaks for full Information Freedom.
Mason Johnson
How sensitive files are?
Aaron James
Use dban, write over at least 7 times.
Daniel Morgan
Tell me your best porn folder please? Going to Wikileaks soon.
Nicholas Morgan
Download fedora or ubuntu linux Boot up into live usb Open terminal and type this command sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda
Done. Your child porn collection is gone now.
Sebastian Harris
You need multiple overwrites to ensure that no fragments of data remain. Also make sure that the data changes are delivered to the actual disk and that nothing remains on f.ex log files or redundant disks on raid.
Adrian Turner
Why not just destroy the hard drive if it's so sensitive?
Noah Gonzalez
Just smash it with a hammer several hundred times.
Hudson Long
>gone now Slowly goes away. Ftfy
Connor Gutierrez
They just had my financial details. I had a few logins and passwords and what not for a few things too.
I just find it interesting, that you can over write and overwrite, yet still be able to dig up files.
Does this mean a HD has infinite space? Is there far more space than you think you are given?
I must have overwritten my free space 7-10 times, I am still able to get these files back. Even after filling the HD up with junk. Thats pretty insane when you think about it.
I need to destroy my hd btw.
Colton Jackson
I DONT need or want*
Logan Cox
Or just gently put hdd/ssd into fire or microwave. Either works.
Angel Smith
Clearly your program that wipes is bullshit. Fill up your drive with random binaries, then reformat it on a Linux installation ISO or something.
If you don't intend to use this drive again, simply destroy it physically.
David Clark
Used three different programs. One of which Hilary Clinton used
Mason Allen
what did you use to recover them afterwards? I've never been able to recover stuff I shredded with bleachbit
Ryan Watson
But you haven't tried shred obviously.
David Ramirez
Op here.
I used bleachbit first, then cypher, then various shredder8 options. I recovered using DMDE.
Clearly none of it works well.
Oliver Gonzalez
Is it an SSD?
Noah Morris
I assume it's not because he could just use secure rase in that case.
Gabriel Taylor
Not him, but he's right OP.
Jacob Martinez
Shredding isn't reliable on an SSD, only HDDs.
Samuel Evans
Oks, tonight I will use Dban after a defrag. I'll try to recover again.
If that dont work, Ill just accept there is no actual way of ridding the data other than destruction of the drive.
William Long
>Ill just accept there is no actual way of ridding the data other than destruction of the drive. You should always do that if you have actual sensitive data.
Carson Gutierrez
Just start up linux on a live usb and dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/
Michael Butler
Just take the hard drive into your back yard and put it down like old yeller.
Hunter Allen
How can you recover it after dd unrandom and DD zero?
You can even run a script to ensure all sectors are zeros
Nathan Perry
The point here, is that I shouldnt have to destroy the whole drive, to simply get rid of a few word and excel files. Yet current methods of destroying these files forever are failing. I actually also think its very interesting how despite all of this I could still access the files.
I thought others might also be interested, and more knowledgeable on the subject.
Brandon Myers
With what did you overwrite that ? 1 and 0 ?
Owen Collins
Dban it and get back to us. What model drive?
Kevin Green
Doesn't formating HHD to a raw state, filling it with all zeros, permanent erase files?
