bloat, learn in2 separation of concerns. should be a separate program which you can bind to a key in any media player program that supports running external commands (mpv for example)

Downloading files IS clearly a distinct task from playing them. Automatic subtitles should be a feature of frontends, not mpv itself.
MPC-HC probably died because it was too complex to maintain. :^)

why do we need a new version if it just works?
virtualdub hasn't been updated in years, and you can still edit your avi's with it. point being when software is polished to the point of being near-perfect, there's not point in modifying anything anymore.
now before you say security updates, do you really need them on a program that mostly plays files offline (as opposed to streaming)

yeah, you won't get new features for the player or fix new discovered bugs, but you can still update the audio-video codecs by yourself

What else is there to do except occasional maintenance? Sometimes a piece of software is just completed and no longer needs developers to actively work on it. Honestly, some of you guys get way too sucked into the feedback loop of instant updates. This is software development, not Twitter.

this software will probably still be in use 15 years from now
if there are changes in how videos are encoded or whatever then you can probably just update your codecs
