Get real, Sup Forums. Nobody is interested in GNU/Linux because it "respects your freedoms" or even that it's "free". Unless you're a freetard with some contrive pseudo-socialist tech hippie ideaology or an insecure desire to fit in with Sup Forums because you can install Gentoo on an ancient laptop that your NEET ass can't afford to replace, the only way Linux is going to appeal to someone in its current state is either cyber security and privacy, or RICING. Windows has looked like absolute fucking garbage since Vista and Mac OSX is as customizable as its hardware. You can visually do anything you want with Linux and that's fantastic but you're never going to get the "year of the linux desktop" until a few requirements are met
>user friendly if you have to touch a terminal even once in your life it is in no way user friendly
>mass produced, available in every tech store, advertised, and comes pre-installed on machines
if you can't even achieve this like Windows and Mac you have no hope
>GAMES you can totally ignore those other two requirements if you had fucking GAMES
and no, nobody gives a shit about the garbage steam library that linux has, Gamers (a large majority of PC users that usually don't need an OS to be very User friendly) who aren't just fucking children (I know alot of dads and middle aged men who like to play simulators and have alot of expensive hardware that linux wouldn't dream of having drivers for) want the new shit they want the obscure shit they want the triple A titles, they want the big MMOs. Linux still prides itself on CS:GO and that's dated at this point. Shit talk gamers all you wan't. they're the ones you want to appeal to if you want to see Linux become a big thing. Gaben tried, it lasted for as long as everyone got their free Tux in TF2 when that was still even a thing.
At this rate, outside of being a development environment, a server host, or a hobby box, just accept the fact that Linux is just a toy OS.

linux is not a company and it is certainly not ment to be one. It exists because people want it to exist and it is for the people who want it to exist. I use it because I like it (and the philosophy for which it stands). If you don't like linux, well then it isn't for you.

As old time Linux user i agree with everything. If my hobbies werent so autistic AKA programming and math i would not see any point using Linux.
Linux will most likely never be for masses and guess what? Its okay. Most people are too fucking dumb anyway why would we even need them? Sure more people equals more this and that drivers and fun but for my needs and to most people who _need: linux it works just fine the way it is.
Cooper Barnes

Just use windows if it bothers you so much.
Bentley Perez
>touch a terminal even once in your life I disagree. Making the terminal more user friendly is a better way. The problem with a terminal is that people don't know what to type and they don't want to learn. If learning is easy and the payoff is there, people will use a terminal. All windows users I know prefer to use a terminal to use git instead of the github for windows client. Thankfully it installs powershell too.
Isaiah Hall
>mass produced, available in every tech store, advertised, and comes pre-installed on machines Nobody watches advertisements anymore grandpa. And if you want to sell stuff, do so. Be the first one to sell overpriced vanilla Debian or some shit. But don't make your own distro unless you have the resources to maintain it.

lets get real for a moment. You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same but remember. Biggest base linuxes are about 1 gigabytes or 2 while windows 10 can be more than 5 gigabytes of data. And what happens when you open them. On the linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with. Maybe slide down or up. On windows though, you feel like a god. Its professional its fast, its all functional. You have a godlike user interface. The thing that the linux does not have. You have those two buttons in the linux, but you still search google for codes to write in terminal. Linux is free because its not worth a penny. Nobody would sell a paper without taking the money. Just not sure why people still buy android while windows phone does 10 times more. Trust me. When you work with windows you know some genius ground breaker dedicated himself to give you an operational os
Jonathan Ortiz

Pretty much, I love that Linux is a thing but I only recommend it if people are being budget conscious, want high security, or want to get into computers heavier Which frankly a ton of people are the former two now adays so I just help them set up ubuntu or mint, and gentoo for the latter Everyone else that might already uses linux

>You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same No? On my super shitty laptop it took like ten to install Ubuntu with encryption, Fedora and Mint was about 5 on a VM unencrypted. And from what I can tell those are most amatuer linux distro instillations. Windows on the machine running the VMs still took like 30+.
Michael Butler
Is this some new pasta? I haven't seen it. >On the linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with What?
About the mobiles OS though, the point is that Android is open source and I suppose that's a big plus for the phone manufacturers. They just take it for free, fiddle with anything they want, and put their shit custom Android on their phones. It's a pity that BB10 didn't stand a chance on the market because ironically I find it to be the most mature mobile OS. One that is actually designed around functionality, rather than assuming that launching "apps" is the only thing someone might need, because "apps" can do everything. Well, that is partially true though. I imagine you could make a BB10-like homescreen for Android.
Eli Martinez
>muh games
Sebastian Morales
I know it's bait but, being free equals freedom to choose whatever you want, mixing and changing software to your own needs. Forcing a massive model, like systemd is even worse, because on a paid system you are paying for a product you know the rules. The freedom of choice is something socialism doesn't allow you.

This. I don't see how Linux could actually become user-friendly when the developers are usually autistic neets. I want to contribute to Linux but my idea of a perfect OS is far from user friendly. I want a powerful and customizable OS. Terminal is just too useful to replace it with anything. I think you could think of making some simple distro that provides some sane defaults and limits the visible options to not confuse the user. However, who would want to make that distro for free? People who might want it are almost certainly people who can't make it. I mean, I don't really care how you play your shitty games.
That to be said, I think that DEs like LXDE or GNOME are pretty user friendly. Clicking that funky icon in one corner and then "Firefox Internet Browser" or "LibreOffice Calc" isn't really rocket science. KDE also is fine in terms of design, but it bugs pretty often.
Thomas Miller

I like linux because I have the right to understand how it functions.
I break it almost every week so I learn about it when repairing.
That's not even a joke.
On Windows the best thing I can hope for when shit breaks is downloading some service pack or update, maybe find a missing .dll online, or simply cry. I can't understand jack about anything because it's all compiled or something. There's that thing about the registry and all and to be honest I don't understand it. But mostly if something breaks I have to reinstall it and hope it works.
Windows is plain fucking retarded.
That said, I'm thinking about buying a Windows 10 license so that I can dual boot and play games every now and then.
Because that's the only thing that still makes Windows worth it, and some studio software like FLStudio and Adobe stuff, but Linux has analogues. Not quite as good as, but that's just a matter of time.
Adam Anderson
Just put it all in one post, man.

Kevin Ortiz
Guys also OP.
I've decided today in few hours actually with a friend to sort our lives together.
No more gayming, wasting time, free time, fun etc. Actually 4 hours of fun come as a reward if we manage to achieve small things we want to achieve and only then in the weekend.
I want to master using my computer, 75% of my time will be used to understand working with memory / learning programming the rest will be used for learning more math.
Now tell me what should I hit my head into, what will shape me into a proper know-how guy - if I want to be competent in the field and eventually after molding myself to develop something truly useful for society.
It will be a long journey - I expect at least two years of all this non-stop work to figure out what I want to do with my life and to restore my brain to a normal state.
I basically have to train myself to be disciplined and pursue only efficiency - but all tips I expect are technology related of course, I'm not asking for psychological coaching just software, books, OS - general directions. TYVM.
Jackson Kelly
>If learning is easy and the payoff is there, people will use a terminal L M A O M A O no you fucking retard, you just don't go there and convince people to use something that would be inconvenient to them it doesn't fucking matter if they are capable of learning it, they will NEVER want to use something as inefficient as a terminal people want to INTERACT with A INTERFACE because it's actually CLEAN and SIMPLE
Cameron Gutierrez

So why not just fucking learn about how to keep it together in the first place instead of just waiting for shit to break? Be proactive instead of reactive since the next time it beaks it could be during something very valuable in some way.
Liam Thomas

Call me lazy and or retarded but I tried Manjaro Linux a few hours ago. I liked the OS I really do, if Linux was completely mature I'd use it as my main.
However after I saw the amount of work it took just to install freakin' Waterfox, let alone try to get some kind of system wide equaliser and drivers for my RX 470 I dropped it. If I had hours to tinker I'd love to do more, but normies use Win 10 for a reason. I don't have to dick around in terminals for minutes on end just to install a web browser that isn't the default.
This is probably more fault of Waterfox not being on a repo than Manjaro itself, but I also find that a flaw of Linux in general. It doesn't have a simple download from internet, install-and-its -there system from a web browser. It's what everyone is used to. I know _how_ to get it set up how I like, but it just takes far too long for me to choose it as my main OS.
It's like the electric car, except Linux still hasn't left the only-50km-of-charge-and-takes-50-hours-to-juice-up phase.
Henry Williams
>96% of servers on the internet run linux >toy OS

Normalfags watch ads, most people don't even know adblockers exist, let alone how to install them.
Levi Collins
>leenux is toy OS hurr What is android? The only requirement for linux to become a thing is a decent HARDWARE PROVIDER. Yeah there's intel cpus, gpus and many more but the drivers don't exist. Even that wifi card won't work. Maybe if you build it in China but they don't care even if they can because "why invest in a market when you can only get 1% of the market share?"
There needs to be a COMPANY that builds it like on android ~ even a chink factory at shenzen can build android phones from scratch because they have all the compatible hardware and top cs programmers. No one's trying to disrupt the desktop market with Linux machines because that path is already taken by microsoft and apple.
It's either new hardware architecture adoption with lots of devs (check) and good organization run by a businessman (sadly, most potential companies are SJW'd right now thanks to redhat) OR nothing.
OSX is good because there's Apple to make it. They even make A10 chips themselves. Windows is good because there's multicompanies who implement their OS into their defaults ~ OEM plus the UX is globally accepted Android is a thing now because many phone makers adopted it (phone OS used to be shit too so this was a huge chance) Linux is well-adopted in the server and cloud but for "some fucking reason" it seems that Red Hat is trying to prevent the year of the linux desktop. (((I wonder why)))
You're intuition is dead if you think the possibilities linux becoming a consumer-grade OEM is none.
Linux will be everywhere in a few years and you won't be able to speak your silly rant again. Underestimating technology will be your undoing.
Brody Adams
Android is really not a good example, considering it's full of half-baked proprietary drivers that lose support after 2-3 years. Very few phones come with the complete source code.
There are several companies that build GNU+Linux, most prominently Red Hat and Novell (SuSE).
As for WiFi adapters, there are enough that do work. So buy those.
Leo Taylor

I don't see how "if you have to touch terminal once" is even a thing for some distros and DE's under normal use. Besides, there's been several times I had to edit something in registry for windows which can be just as complicated if you are coming from a position of facebook and gaymen only.

You can't be serious. This is bait, right? r-right?
Josiah Campbell
Installing a browser from the terminal is both easier and quicker. You literally just type your distros respective install command then the name of the browser. On Windows, you have to find the website, find the download page, download an installer, run it and go through it, THEN you can use the browser. Takes much longer.

(bait thread for free yous) Ubuntu is as user friendly as win10. Now go fuck yourself and do something else of your life instead of making free you's thread you pathetic monkey fuck
Jayden Ramirez
It doesn't matter how long it takes. The GUI way is still more intuitive and easier than using the fucking terminal.
Elijah Long
Well OP. Actually most of shit you talk about is a shit.
Firs of all Linux is not shit system. For example alot of servers runs on debian linux, why? Because debian is very, very stable and stability is a thing what makes server do its job.
Second linux has distros known for being user friendly (Linux Mint Cinnamon for me takes the cake).
The only downfall is Gaming and some professional programs like Autocad.
