one of the component drives started to fail, so i replaced it, but btrfs couldn't handle the situation and fell to bits

Same. I only heard about it, though, because the project was managed by another employee. Can't remember clearly, it was either inodes exhaustion or a free space exhaustion. The file system locked down, it was impossible to mount volumes, he managed to save a fraction of data.
