>Linux enthusiast
>discord
No.
>Actually hasn't got a question but shills for a freedom denying service.
Stop forcing discord. it's not gonna happen.
>discord
Ok guys as much as I hate discord Skype became absolute dogshit over the years, those forced ads are cancer
Straight from wikipedia:
>Discord is a proprietary freeware VoIP application
>Linux [...] is a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open-source software development and distribution.
Can you spot the incompatibility?
There are irc channels for linux enthusiasts
Link some then
>Using skype after ms ruined it
>Skype
Get the fuck off this board and never come back.
>This proprietary application X is shit, let's try proprietary application Y.
When will you proprietary cucks finally spot the pattern.
Mumble exists as one of many examples.
If you have troubles using search engines, then you really missing on what information you can find on the internet.
I.e. irc for linux enthusiasts
Google some of them
>implying I updated Skype
How do I talk online with normies ?
Don't you have to pay for a mumble server ?
Running the outdated version is probably an even worse idea, given that it probably has security holes galore at this point.
You get normies to use your Mumble server and you host your own Mumble server at home.
What if I have a very low upload ?
Pretty sure discord is proprietary. Try IRC or Wire.
>pay for mumble
No, that's teamspeak. Mumble is FLOSS.
>how do I talk with normies
Facebook messenger, Wire-app
Did you knew that first thing ms did to skype after they bought it was: removed encryption and made it centralised.
Now tell me, are you really using skype from 2011?
>Don't you have to pay for a mumble server ?
No, it's free software.
>We are facing a funding crisis
JUST
Just use Discord for normies
Wire is fucking great. As long as people push it, there's no reason it shouldn't overtake skype, since its ad-free. Privacy is the reason to use it, but the least common denominators don't give a shit about privacy, so ad-free and pretty are the reasons it should be pushed to them.
Pretty sure skype is encrypted. It's just not E2E encrypted.
Wire's servers are closed source
What is low? How many users are you expecting to server?
>Tfw on server it's plain text
And
>Trusting ms
Then it's as good as non-encrypted.
1 mbps, and no normie would ever want to download mumble to chat with me :s
I would, hun :^)
Yes, but the servers being closed source does not impede the security of the app based on how the cryptography was implemented and maintained on the clients.
That's because you're not a normie but thanks :)
So wired is secure because you trust wire devs?
OK
this, matrix is future
No, wired is secure because the source itself is open, even if the servers aren't. Closed source servers can't do shit against good cryptology with verifiable E2E encryption.
But I am, had couple gfs, girls thinks I'm attractive, no friends though :")
There are ads on Skype? What the fuck why do people use that garbage
How does that matter if all communication is accessible on server?
Or is it end to end, without server in middle encryption?
But they -would- download Skype/Discord?
It's also available for Linux, unlike skype (unless you want to use their electron-based app). So its literally available for more platforms, as well.
Normies already have Skype/Discord user
It's E2E. The protocol that is implemented within Wire is called Proteus – and is modeled off of the Signal Protocol (Double Ratchet Algorithm for key management) and Axoltl. This is well documented, and open source. The clients, cryptography implementations, and protocols were open-sourced. The cryptography methods for client-sharing, keypair generation, prekeys, and everything else is well documented and considered best practices,
Can't touch that.
If they mindlessly installed all that crap you should have no problems persuading them into installing mumble.
>discord
Wire is electron based tho
Hm... Closed source servers still sound fishy...
Unless someone competent reviewed wires source code, someone should monitor it's net activity. If it calls home
Really? Source?
They have security white papers published, yes. They have since addressed all the issues that were found - issues that they also found with Signal (which Signal also addressed). You can find the published results on Wire's webpage.
Of course it calls home. How are you connecting to anything in the first place? The question is: are they acting like man in the middle and snoop your data. Since the product is proprietary and free (as in free beer) the answer is most likely "yes".
Well then... It sounds pretty good.
>source
It literally says so on their github page
I like discord cause of the voice chat.
Skype is a fucking mess and the only thing that comes close is teamspeak
Well... Guess what I meant by asking if it calls home..?
Using correlation you might get some answers regarding security
Mumble is literally a better teamspeak. Skype is BLOAT and garbage. Wire, Riot and Ring have voice chat afaik.
Discord is the most popular now so thats what you're stuck with
That's complete bullshit.
>Subway is the world's largest fast food chain so the only place you can eat is at Subway.
>you're stuck
Nope, using wire.
>food analogy
Fuck off retard
You can verify the fingerprint of any device using wire in person. Combine this with the encryption used, and I don't see how a MITM thing could be done
Discord is either going to die from not being able to pay back investors or will data mine the hell out of you.
guess wich one is already happening :^)
We have our own alternative to Discord OP:
We also have an easy to use web gateway and server up to get yourself situated. Come and stop by if you actually want to talk with savvy GNU/Linux operators and not just scrubs:
