Very few new models of home Wi-Fi routers have been introduced this year, and all the new models are focused on signal repeating and network meshing being enabled right out of the box and are sold in a package of 2 to 4 routers (that are already paired with each other).
It seems networking gear manufacturers have given up on trying to increase the maximum data transfer throughput or shoving more NAS features into the routers.
I like how routers get more and more badass-looking and I hope they continue to look more like Starcraft buildings
Carson Morris
Pretty much. It's good enough for Americans' shitty broadband infrastructure and people are putting more traffic on mobile networks anyway.
I honestly wouldn't mind if cellular data does to home internet what cellular phones did to landlines. Maybe I should post that in the "hopes for 2020" thread.
Connor Sanchez
bought some DUAL-BAND 2.4/5GHz chinkshit for $30 and flashed dd-wrt on it. works fucking amazing.
Brayden Clark
We're approaching the limits already of 802.11ac throughput for single streams. The progress in the next couple of years will be in active antennas with active signal shaping (active beamforming) to increase range and broader usage of MU-MIMO and 1024QAM. All of that is expensive right now, and most consumers don't want to spend north of 500 dollarydoos on a router.
John Morris
Why buy something like this when an Edgerouter X and UAP-AC-LITE is like $150 and easy as fuck to configure?
Angel Brooks
Are router chipset manufacturers like Broadcom and Qualcomm Atheros holding off on better MIMO until Intel shits out compatible adapter chips?
Henry Hernandez
Furthermore once we finally reach the potential of 802.11AC the next standard should be right about ready to drop: 802.11ax.
Adrian Butler
>It seems networking gear manufacturers have given up on trying to increase the maximum data transfer throughput router manufacturers aren't the r&d for asics that support higher tiers of bandwidth, they're buying what is available for them to buy, just as the enterprise manufacturers are having trouble getting the same things at reasonable prices
Hunter Ramirez
Most people are too stupid for that, they see this sci-fi shit on a shelf at best buy and think "well it looks cool, must be good" Most people have no idea that separate wireless APs and routers exist
Austin Sanders
I did that. Took me a bit of time because I need my very specific subnet prefix and ipv6 support for autism purposes. BUT it is good. Replace old apple airport system with no chinkshit mission accomplished
Bentley Myers
Nah not really. The problem is cost and maturity as always. First the business world gets it, then it trickles down to consumer products.
I mean, a simple LAN + WLAN network takes minutes but I hear you, I've got a VLAN for a guest WLAN and another VLAN for my VoIP phone to connect to my office so my setup took a little longer.
Ethan Price
ipv6 support is actually a bit shit and not implemented in the gui so you have to touch the json config if I remember correctly. I like EdgeOS though, the firmware updates are slick
Matthew Powell
Manufactures: the more it hurts for someone to fall on top of the router, the faster the speeds
Michael Martinez
Also holy shit boys and girls, it looks like the first chipsets for 802.11AX have already hit the market (Keep in mind 802.11AX is not finalized yet):
Why are you falling on top of your router? They're usually on a shelf or a desk and not in the middle of a room...do you regularly throw yourself on top of your desk?
Brandon Rivera
>Broadcom disgusting
Tyler Rodriguez
Live in Australia with NBN FTTP. what router/modem should I get?
Owen Garcia
Is this a meme now?
Bentley Reed
why are routers so expensive anyway? it's not like their components (CPU's/RAM modules) are expensive...
which one? xiaomi? does it have GbE?
Colton Powell
>consumer routers Fucking literal cucks, instead of getting your own pfsense box and some enterprise grade AP
Dylan King
>enterprise grade AP lol
Benjamin Reyes
>cellular data does to home internet what cellular phones did to landlines I sure as fuck hope not. >150ms RTT @ 10Mbps
Or, just get a edgerouter-x ($50) a gigabit switch of your choosing and/or a Ubiquit WAP (~$75).
Both work great and setup is pretty straightforward.
Nathan Perez
>shoving more NAS features into the routers.
Have you not seen Synology's routers?
Also throughput is limited by the end device in 99% of use cases. Routers could support 10GbE but there's no point when it's not in any consumer products
Tyler Brooks
Try not to shill this hard in a single thread or they will catch on to your viral marketing campain.
Isaac Ramirez
So two people with the same idea == shilling? Nah, they're just cheap and really good network gear. What's your problem?
Justin Torres
Someone post the spider router.
Brody Gomez
This may sound stupid but for example if a one antenna has 10 meters radius doesn't that mean all antennas have 10 meters radius and the signal won't arrive to more than 10 meters 0 antenna < 1 antenna = ∞ antennas?

Joke's on me; I don't even have a wired internet plan for my apartment.
I use the wireless hotspot on my phone to connect my laptop to the internet.
Zachary Ortiz
It even has eight legs haha. The designer must have had a blast.
Most people don't even use ac protocol yet. It's already a few years old. Bean forming and good automatic WLAN/security features should already be the norm in a 50€ box but they aren't. Manufacturers don't actually give a shit.
Bentley Bailey
Why? Literally got ac68u for free and an asus ac3100 for $70. What's the point of spending triple the price for a router + switch + AP?
Zachary White
>flying metal routers with zerg-styled watercooling i need to save money for the future
Sebastian White
>current year >not having 20+ roaming rattos >not setting up wifi to maximize the ratto/cable ratio its like you are a fucking normie

From 1 to Trump, how retarded are you?
Sebastian Hall
>trump >retarded
Henry Morris
Get either a refurbished r7800 or wrt3200acm. Install LEDE/OpenWRT on it. Done, that shit will last you at least 7/8 years.
Robert Morales
JUST CRANK UP THA OUTPUT POWAH
Liam Perez
Routers aren't something there are yearly models of son...
Henry Cruz
More like he doesn't want a router that uses 50watts...
Zachary Wood
>enterprise AP >for wireless How many people do you think you're having around user? Wireless is so your phone and tablet have reasonable network access - everything else should be hardwired anyway.
Easton Jenkins
Anything from the last 10 years.
Elijah Sullivan
The FCC would like to have a word with you. Still though what the hell? just a single watt is all that is allowed and that's combined power not just the transmitter power
