Okay... so I found an old version of the file I downloaded several months ago, different md5... it was recognised and installed correctly...
Does anyone know how I'm supposed to be downloading this file from here git.xfce.org

I think I've done that because my downloads were 1.5MB, the working version was 200kB. Any hints on how to download it properly?

Right click root/1.5.0/xfce4-hardware-monitor-plugin_1.5.0-1_amd64.deb and you download a 1.5MB webpage.
Right click "plain"

and you download a valid .deb file.
