VMware vs Virtualbox: Who wins?

If it makes any difference, I want to virtualize Windows 10 on my laptop running Arch

VMware but Virtualbox is good enough

/thread

Why does VMware come out on top?

KVM.

Proprietary software are just better.

It has more features and in my experience is more stable

KVM/Qemu

Well it is a type 1 hypervisor for starters. Does Virtualbox have anything like vSAN or NSX or even just vDS? No.

VMware for big labs and environments. For small home labs virtual box is great, it has supperior disk performance and it is free.

>For small home labs virtual box is great, it has supperior disk performance and it is free.
lol no. VMware has both PVSCSI and NVMe disk controllers for VMs, Virtualbox can only emulate a LSI chip.

Last time I tried to use VMware free (Vmware player?) It didn't even allow snapshots. At that time it was like Virtualbox was a full product and VMWare player (free) was the watered down version of a full product.

VMware Player is the free watered down version. You should be using vSphere.

Wtf are you talking about? vmware isn't a product. It's not a Type 1. It's a brand name.

It's like saying "Microsoft is a great OS". It makes no fucking sense.

vSphere or ESXi are vmware Type 1 hypervisors. Workstation or Player or Fusion or whatever are it's Type 2 offerings.

No one cares about or uses workstation or player, they're essentially dead products, they dont support PVSCSI, NVMe, VMXNET3 or pretty much any feature VMware has added in the past 5+ years.

Now stay monumentally autistic

ahh so vSphere is like an installable OS, and it's free?

>vSphere

vSphere is for servers you fucking retards.

who could say a software that can only run virtual machines has less features than one that can create and manage them, right?

You're not wrong user, they are definitely dead or dying, but vmware still isn't a product - it's still a brand.

Linus cucktips seems to think it is for gaming PCs though user

You can find a keygen for it easily

I'm sorry you're too poor to have servers at home

>implying anyone was talking about servers in the first place

This thread is about virtualization products - vmware vs virtualbox

VMWare workstation pro > VirtualBox

Virtualbox can use KVM as the hypervisor.

VirtualBox wins because it suits my needs for Windows 7 and Windows 10, as well as various Linux distros, and is free.

But I've found older operating systems like Windows 98 work much better in VMWare.

Red Hat > Oracle
Use virt-manager with Qemu and KVM instead of Virtualbox

gnome-boxes

:D :D
:D

also your sound wont work.

vmware player sucks donkey dick

Vbox is fine all around

workstation is good

esx is based

xen is godly

docker is for weebs

vmware beats virtualbox on windows
virtualbox beats vmware on linux due to not being able to even boot properly
kvm+qemu beats virtualbox on linux

Why do you have to overcomplicate things?
I've used both and virtualbox is better for desktop usage. It's a pain in the ass to get bidirectional drag and drop, bidirectional copy paste and especially shared folders working in qemu.

2gb video vs 128mb video

Rev up that KVM & OVMF cause I need one fast as fuck machine

>[email protected]
lol

If someone is asking for a comparison between "VMWare" and Virtual box, they are obviously asking about VMWare workstation, not vsphere or esxi you mong.
Why would anyone compare vsphere to virtual box? It's like comparing a sedan to a private jet.

I would like to do the same.
But I suppose that you're using two computers(vsphere server+client)?
And what are you using in the VMs?

qemu

Because Virtualbox is open source?

> Kvm
> qemu

Can't share files between guest and host. Kind of defeats the purpose since Office is the only reason to use Windows unless you're a gay gaymer.

vmware is made by people paid to make it as good as possible

virtualbox is a weekend project by communists

Completely the other way around, boyo

This user gets it

In terms of performance I really don't know, but VirtualBox has a baller CLI (VBoxManage) which is really neat and worth taking a look at. I'm not sure VMware Workstation/Player/Fusion/etc. has the same.

VirtualBox if we're staying strictly between the two on Linux, because VMWare on Linux is shit and is not intuitive to install in any way. On Windows, VMWare Workstation fucks VBox up its ass in terms of stability and features. VBox flat out fails to work half the time on Windows, especially with shit like passing through USB flash drives.

However, since we are speaking about Linux, you should be using neither VBox or VMWare; you should be using QEMU+KVM.

Anyone have resources to learn and use VMWare? What do you recommend to practice using it and what are common setups for small to medium sized IT business?

Qemu+KVM

virtualbox is limited to 128mb video, which is crap for everybody not just for gaymers

many others handy and stability features

The developers get paid to work on it. SUN used to pay salary for their projects but Oracle more than likely cut the budget to near 0 for VB.

VMware isn't

This. But VMware is God like.

Not if you're using Ryzen.

Red Hat is a cancer.

I find VirtualBox more user friendly but it completely sucks with AMD stuff. My dual core i7 can run Vbox better than an FX 8350

Used VMware workstation for malware analysis for a little over a year. Shit was great, didn't crash, and was easy to use. Tried to use Virtualbox a few times at home and hated it in comparison. Really depends on who is buying and your need. One is a good hobbyist solution and the other is for real work

Both craps

Nvidia does not allow GPU access to guest OS on consumer hardware. You have you pay for Quadro.

>Nvidia does not allow GPU access to guest OS on consumer hardware.
It does you tard. Just add hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = false to the VMX file on ESXi

fug

You either DELETE THIS or your nVidia GeForce Experience account right will be revoked.

and you will get worse overall performance because you are not telling the guest os it resides inside a vm
gud luck with that

lol no, its makes no difference at all

qemu or xen

>office
Spotted the wagecuck. If you did anything of importance you would be using TeX or something.

>lol no
jensen pls...

stay salty that you cant do pic related

Oh! i have silly images too, i'm gonna post it even if it's not related to the discussion at all.

>Fortune 500 Company
>Communist
pick one

This. Proxmox is better.
