Not getting hired for jobs

>be me
>really love computers
>decide to dropout of hs to have to learn more
>1 month ago was my 18th bday
>been working at dq for 2 yrs and need a new job
>see local best buy is hiring and apply
>go to interview and tell them all i've learned and plan on learning
>call them 2 days later to see if i got the job
>lie to my face to let me down easy

what are your guy's experiences?

sorry for spelling errors i have been sick for awhile and decided to make a thread to get my mind off of things

>decide to dropout of hs to have to learn more
>decide to dropout of hs
>>>dropout of hs

Are you fucking retarded?

Nevermind, I know the answer already.

dyslexia is one hell of a drug

I'm around your age, turned 18 4 months ago. Just passed my A levels and have a place at university (and because I'm not from England I get to pay 12k instead of 27k) to do computer networking.

Dropping out of hs was the most retarded thing you could have done, especially if it was to learn more about your computers

Most companies care about some kind of formal education.

It might not show that you are good at what you do but it does show that you can devote time to one thing and learn it.

to give some context my old school didn't teach anything computer related and only our uni and collages had classes but hey at least in highschool i learned metal working because gotta learn that

It doesn't matter what it teaches. The GED is important to have for all kinds of job applications.

Do yourself a favor and get a diploma or certificate. Only takes a year and qualifies you to work a help desk.

>calling to ask if you got the job
instant blacklist

My first job was a janitor nigga. You are on the bottom of the ladder. Below the bottom. The bottom is a high school diploma.

Work hard to get a master degree in civil engineering with specialist knowledge in water infrastructure. Apply to 300 jobs and barely any interviews... Drain all my savings while applying for jobs. Give up dream of working as a civil engineer (I had good grades as well), apply for programming jobs. Wasted the better part of a decade on a useless master degree.

t. lazy IT nigger

Why the fuck would you drop out of HS to learn more about computers?
Can you explain the logic there to me?
I played varsity sports in HS, took plenty of AP classes, and still had time to learn C++ on the side and start making meaningful contributions to some open source bullshit.

You might just be retarded.

I know a lot about multiple Linux distros. But I since I don't have that paper to my name can't get past the HR filter drones.

>call them 2 days later
>call
>lie to your face
u wot m8

I don't think most companies or jobs even bother checking that you graduated high school. It's such a basic requirement that it's assumed in most cases. Could very likely get away with lying resume.

Same. I have applied to over a hundred of IT jobs online and no one ever calls me back, I can't even secure an interview to demonstrate my skills. I need to work to pay for meds to be able to be healthy so I can go back to school but no one will hire me not even at fucking 7/11 or Walmart.

Yeah... sorry.. but most people know that regardless, an HS diploma looks a lot better than a GED, or absolutely nothing...

Highschool isn't supposed to teach about computers, Its to expand your basic education.. (language skills, math, research, physical fitness, general life skills). you take the required classes, get the piece of paper that says that you spent 12 years (or more) and know basic reading, writing, mathematics, etc. then you can move onto your career, unless you test out of high school and graduate early. Colleges especially want to see HS diplomas, as well as those grades to see if you take studying seriously / if your worth admission

I hope you pursued / are perusing a GED.

As well pc jobs can be hard to get.. I literally got lucky at a small store, and went from the receptionist / cleaning person. Went from there to working on a couple computers, to a technician, to head technician, to manager of the store within a couple years.

Also, tech jobs at best buy, and office repair stores are NOT real repair jobs. Their main goal is sales over service. Anything that requires half a brain (more than clicking the giant 'fix' button on geek squad software) then they send it out and tell you to charge a fuckton like screen replacements for 3-600 bucks...

I'm not in a computer related job, but I've been flown out all over the US roughly once every 2 weeks to interview for positions. Giving up an hour on the phone and an hour in an office is worth the mini-vacation I get every other weekend in the summer.

Not even interested in getting another job, as I make 46.50/hr in a town where I can rent a pet friendly duplex with all wood floors, an attached garage, a storage shed in the back yard, and lawn care included for 400/month, and get internet without data caps for 36/month (although I pay 44 to get better speeds).

my company does as part of the standard background check procedure, but we are primarily a software dev company with a few entry-level IT (high school diploma).
afaik it's part of the standard background check package which we run anyway for criminal check, etc.
not sure how it is at larger corps

I deal with a bunch of bullshit from dumbass best buy or office depot / office max, / staples repair.. Once I had to turn on a DVD drive in the BIOS on an older clamshell dell that OD installed because they 'weren't allowed to touch the BIOS".

Another time I talked to a guy who bought a laptop from OD who ONLY WANTED TO PLAY DVD MOVIES and have a built in drive, and the salesman talked him into a laptop THAT DIDN'T HAVE A DVD DRIVE BUILT IN.

Had one that best buy sold, guy brought home, and pc wasn't getting any wifi... so brought it back the next day.. after they finally listened to the guy that theres no wifi networks (silly customer, wifi passwords are nescessary) they put it up, saw that there was NO wifi networks showing up unless its about 2 feet from a router... Sooooo... After 45 minutes of head scratching, "sir you have a VIRUS, and we need to do a removal, it will be $150.00, but we also offer a protection plan for 50 bucks, you also need McAfee, thats 80 bucks a license) on a computer thats about 18 hours old and NEVER BEEN ONLINE... after a few choice words and telling them where they can shove their plans, I looked at it. This HP had a dedicated access panel for a wifi card. I pull the access panel and guess what?!??11 the wifi antenna is unplugged.

These stupid FUCKS were going to sell him over 200 bucks in 'labor' and services that HE DIDN'T EVEN NEED THAT WOULDN'T FIX A BRAND NEW COMPUTER

My experience is largely different from most of Sup Forums.

> 18 during the .com bubble (98/99)
> Know computers alright, mostly like playing with hardware
> Start working PC repair for a shop in Seattle
> Get handed two racks of HP / Compaq / DEC servers with NT4 / Windows 2000 beta's
> Told to make it work
> Build an NT4 cluster out of the Alpha's, make it SQL
> Use it for UPS World Ship
> Turn HP NetServer LPr's into Windows 2000 domain controllers
> Fuck around with Back Office 4.0 and Exchange
> Get promoted to System Admin
> Make $45K/yr working part time while still in school

Was lots of fun. Blew most of my money on computer stuff. Still lived at home with parents. Ended getting let go when the company imploded because bubble, moved to Portland, had all the fun.

Good times.

Where is that? Sounds nice.

Small town south of Wichita, KS.

protip
just lie about everything
dropped out of HS like a retard? lie about it
put some fake experience on your resume, lie about dropping out, and back up your lies in the interview with some knowledge

So you a neckbeard NEET with no degree and probly no job. And probly doesnt know shit

Not a bad piece of advice, but there's a caveat: don't lie about shit they can prove you are lying about. Don't say you worked at a company you didn't work for, for example.

>get hired
>they ask for your papers
>either get fake hs diploma and risk going to jail or get fired and blacklisted before you even begin
What a good idea.

I've never had an employer ask for a copy of my HS diploma.

I feel you.
>Graduated in may
>BS ChemE 3.9 MS materials 3.85
>2 years working at a uni lab, 1 year in industry
>Applied to probably 35 jobs online, never got so much as a phone call from those
>Been networking like hell, which has actually gotten me interviews
>Gotten to the final round for 5 jobs now, only to lose the position to someone with 2-3 years of post-college experience on me
>"You did great in the interview user, but ultimately we had to go with the more qualified candidate"
>Feel like the recruitment system treats me as completely disposable and worthless
>When I finally land a job it will probably have a shitty salary because "It's a rough economy for job seekers right now :^)"

>ive never had a job before
no job will ever ask you to prove you have a hs diploma

Not in every country is the same. In Mexico they do ask for original paper and they keep a copy. There is so much forgery going on they do this retarded shit with every formal job.

>be male
>live in Russia
>really love computers
>decide to dropout of hs to have to learn more
>1 month ago was my 18th bday
>being called in the army
>hell to pay for an year
>return with bunch of mental issues
What are you worrying about, American boy? You live is better than others lives on this planet by default

You are completely disposable and worthless.
Ever wonder why immigration is pushed so hard?

>The days of honest Mom and Pop computer repair are over

>i learned metal working because gotta learn that

Useless skill. Virtually all manufacturing has been shipped overseas so any kind of woodworking, metalworking, glassworking, etc are all useless. Nice for a hobby but not for a job. Metalworking ain't gonna help get you into McDonads or Walmart.

It's always tough to get your foot in the door in skilled jobs. It's like getting your first job while in HS: any job is a good first one.

Take whatever offered, and work it for 2 years, and begin looking elsewhere. Worst case scenario, you're there for 5 years. When I started as an operator for a power plant, I was making 14.28/hr to do a swing shift (3 days 1st shift, then 4 days 2nd shift, then 3 days 1st shift, then 4 days off). Now I'm making more than triple that amount of money, and could work literally anywhere (not joking, I've even been offered work in Antarctica - pic related).

You're 18. Go get a job at a pizza joint and sign up to be a closing/rush driver. There's huge turn over rate and they're always looking for people. If you're fast and work hard, you can make up to 20 dollars an hour on good days.

Your classmates from India/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh are willing to do the exact same work, for much less compensation.

>2009, 24 years old
>working as manager of small family takeout business
>decide restaurants suck
>get it in my head that I should be in IT
>recurring idea since teenager
>go few hundred miles away to where folks have second, unoccupied house
>start applying to jobs like mad
>send carefully crafted resume to every. single. job. posting. for qa and tier 1 helpdesk
>check job sites multiple times a day
>new posting? send resume
>no response for weeks
>get desperate
>applying for anything
>fucking bicycle taxi in tourist area
>they don't fucking respond either
>find tech job with ambiguous description
>fuck it, apply
>weeks later, planning on heading back to miserable restaurant existence
>night before i'm planning to drive back, get a phone call
>when can i start
>scrape websites using purchased software for the next yeear

That was 8 years ago. Today, I'm at the same company as a mid-level sysadmin with a fucking array of applications used company-wide under my care and several large, expensive projects in progress where i'm the point man.

I took a LOT of knocks on the head getting to where I am. I was (and still often am) surrounded by people who make me look like I still bang rocks together to try to make fire. My situation is FAR, FAR, FAR from realistic. I attribute this to the fact that I'm generally likeable and that there was a LOT of luck involved.

And I have a fucking high school diploma, OP.

A fucking high school diploma.

Get your GED, at least, for fuckssake.

Also, I dream about being a fucking park ranger a lot because fuck a datacenter.

As someone who has worked for both state and federal government (although not as a park ranger), I would recommend against it.

The fucking bureaucracy is insane, and its like a constant leech on your overall happiness.

Holy fuck user do I relate.
>Need meds to function
>Need insurance to pay for doctor visits for meds
>Need job to pay for meds
It's an endless cycle of fuckery.

Yeah it's pretty hard to get out of it specially if you're young with no job experience and no studies. At this point I consider suicide more than getting a job.

Liberty HealthShare, nigger.

The absolute most I can spend out of pocket on their most expensive plan per year is still less than what I would pay on my employer's premiums and copays. Top two tiers includes dental, vision, chiropractic, and medication, too, complete with a cost estimator for each and every medication available, as well as the generic version and its costs.

>moving to Portland
Move back.

Who can pay 149 bucks a month with no job?

Kek I pay less than that in tax for my nationalised healthcare.

Wow what a fucking cucked commie haha must suck having to die at the ER waiting for your turn.

>power plant operator

What kind of qualifications are they looking for? I almost have my AS in for EE. Wondering if I can get in as a tech. Most of my education has been focused on small-signal electronics but the basic theory is all there and I have experience with instrumentation. I can't afford getting my BS without upgrading from a minimum wage job and I'm not eligible for financial aid.

Who can afford the fines for not being insured?

Yeah, but I'm guessing your country isn't filled with old fat boomers that spent their entire life doing drugs (pot in the 70s, coke in the 80s, and crack/meth in the 90s, antidepressants/pain killers in the 2000s to present), and are looking for miracle pills to fix all the problems such actions wracked their aging bodies with, while the younger populations are struggling just to get their foot in the door due to boomers never planning for retirement and robbing their own nationalized retirement fund in the 70's and 80's, stuffing the fund with a bunch of IOU's with no plan to actually pay it back.

>Move back.
Did. Bought 400 acres outside of Olympia. Fuck Portland, you people can't drive worth shit.

God I hope our generation does actually implement death panels and makes the boomers' nightmare a reality.

I'm not from Portland. Its a shithole there, but people coming to Oregon for Portland gentrifies the state altogether.

Don't listen to all these people telling you that dropping out of hs to learn programming was a mistake.
I have a couple HS friends who dropped out and programmed and are making six figures still, all before 30.
Just make sure youre building a portfolio of programming projects since your not in school which is really all computer science in college/uni is for anyways.

Seriously OP, computer science in college is the biggest waste of money. It's not like Mathematics or engineering where your more seriously crippled learning it in your own. Programming is more of a trade or a foreign language at most than an actual job but because it requires some math skills so people don't group it at such.

Most of the high paying places are looking for people with 3-5 year experience in whatever generation method they use (and just because you have experience with a gas turbine and a steam turbine separately doesn't mean you have experience with a combined cycle plant).

Most entry level shit (looking at ~15-20 bucks per hour to start) is looking for people who know their shit about basic electrical theory (like "a year as an electrician apprentice" kind of basic), and has a basic grasp on shit like blueprints, tolerance, etc, and are looking to train in-house.

I wouldn't really recommend looking into it unless you can take that $15-20/hr pay rate for at LEAST 3 years, perhaps up to 5.

I will happily take $15-20 for 3-5 years. I'm getting paid $11/hr to serve burgers now so literally anything is an upgrade. Right now I need a foot-in-the-door kind of technical job to use as a jumping off point for the rest of my career.

I would just like shit to swing libertarian. Then the good boomers who took care of their bodies, raised their kids right, and weren't all-around assholes could afford their own private insurance and their kids could inherit the house in exchange for helping the parents out during their last years of life.

Meanwhile, the selfish assholes that just took and took and took, and never gave anything back, starve on the streets.

Then I recommend Kansas. From the beginning of 2013 to the end of 2015, literally 1/3 of the electrical workforce retired. Wichita is one of the cheapest places to live, too, with surrounding small towns being even cheaper.

Why people hate Portland? I know one guy from Vancouver, AS and he said he hated the people in Portland.

People who drop out of high school have horrible language skills. There's no way more than 1 friend is making over six figures without degrees. Doesn't work that way

I'll consider it. Before I make a big move like that I'm gonna try to see what I can grab in Connecticut or Eastern New York or Massachusetts. If things don't pan out here I'll look nationally. Don't really wanna leave the northeast but I'll do it temporarily for experience if necessary.

Story time.

I went to a dev bootcamp earlier this year. I won't say which one because if I do, you'll accuse me of being a shill.

It was actually great. I learned more practical skills in five months than I learned in four years of college (linguistics major) and two years of grad school (speech and language therapy).

Having said that, I had to take a month off because my newfound understanding of basic programming was so overwhelming to me that it triggered a psychotic episode, and I had to take a month off just to get my head straight.

>dropping out of high school for this
you're dumb as shit aren't you?

Sup Forums is not the job board

go to or if you want career advice. even go to how you being a failure is related to technology discussion?

You're going to be just as fucked when you're their age. Let's not pretend you can't escape aging. Millennials may think

This guy again. Here's a place to start: hrepartners.com/allopenjobs.aspx

Just Ctrl+F "Electric"

High cost of living, one of the most "progressive" towns, too, meaning people are super fucking annoying. Like, "Can you tell me if the chicken is farm-to-table, and if so, what farm did it come from, who transported it, etc?" annoying.

I'd get the fuck away from the coasts. I was born in Boston. Best decision I ever made was to go to the Midwest to begin my career. The Northeast has an astronomical cost of living in comparison to flyover territory. You can go back when you get experience, and make 60 bucks per hour in a few years (that's what I was offered from a plant in Andover, Mass).

Yeah I know the cost of living is much lower out west which would help. I have a friend going to school down in Mississippi. I wouldn't wanna live permanently in one of the flyovers but I can deal for a few years if it will help make me employable for the future.

I dropped out of high school and my language skills are better than most people that just got into uni.

In Wichita, there is an studio apartment that is pet friendly, has a bus stop, and includes cable tv, electric, and water in the ~400/month rent.

Called Pawnee Park. Perfectly servicable for someone just starting out. They will even furnish your apartment for an additional cost.

buildersinc.com/apartments/pawnee-park/

Same except phy-chem phd.
Apply for research jobs over a good part of my 20s. Got turned down by every institute in Europe. and i mean every single one.
Do data entry in the meantime so i don't starve. Move up to codemonkey in a few months.

Glad i took that C programing class. Not that i learned anything. But it got me certifications.

Civil engineers are mostly employed by local governments. It's rough finding all the different government websites.

>looking for people who know their shit about basic electrical theory (like "a year as an electrician apprentice" kind of basic), and has a basic grasp on shit like blueprints, tolerance,
I literally have all that.
What the fuck am I doing in San Diego, I'm to young to move out on my own though.

That's pretty fucking great. That would be like $800-1000 minimum in Connecticut. Maybe more like $700 if you were willing to live in the ghetto
