Shortened and abbreviated numbers becoming a trend

Anyone else just.. not a fan of this new trend? reddit did this last year with their upvotes counter, and now YouTube is doing it with their new desktop design.

You can still inspect element to see the full likes or dislikes, but still. I like data to be right there, I don't like it hidden.

It is well known that the average Internet user feels extremely uncomfortable when xir sees more than 3 digits together.

the fuck?

but do we need to actually see a total number as a prospective person?
>sounds like real numbers would only matter to the creator themselves

There's no benefit to abbreviating the numbers aside from space, which clearly isnt a concern.

There is no benefit to seeing the actual numbers. What does it matter if you have 80746 or 81292 upvotes? That's a difference of < 1 %. If you are even going to remember it, then you'll most likely just remember that it was around 81k. Also, the rounded number is easier to read. No matter how intelligent you feel for being able to read a 5 digit number.

>No matter how intelligent you feel for being able to read a 5 digit number.
Americans, everyone.

saves them bandwidth

What
Do
You
Not
Understand?

because it allows for like/dislike spoofing.
not sure if the full numbers are accessible through YouTubes APIs but they'll probably scrap that in a few months.
think of it like this; right now you see a video with 2M likes and 200K dislikes. If you dislike it, how can you tell the counter was affected? Likewise, YouTube can cram 100k+ likes to a video without anyone being able to tell. Same thing as the comment 'dislike' button. Now it doesn't actually do anything. In a few years this change will allow YouTube to manufacture likes/dislikes without anyone without server access being able to verify.

>not wanting to get dubs on the viewcount of the latest h3jew3 video

to clarify; the dislike button hasn't done anything in the past 3+ years. prepare for the video dislike pattern to follow the same fate (ignoring the 'controversial' content of course)

what'sa xir?

Why is this a problem? Literally who cares?

autists

people who understand what this change means for the future of content creation.

Oh no, the globalists are manipulating likes on Youtube now. If YouTube wanted to do that for some reason it wouldn't matter if you could see every digit. You think they're too retarded to make a system that doesn't add 100k likes at a time?

It's a word you can type into your friendly neighbourhood search engine to find out about instead of wasting my time on a botswanian minifigure sculpting board. It's a meme word to refer to him/her/they and to keep the mentally ill complacent

Worse thing is when websites don't show full timestamp, but just "a year ago", not even if you hover over it, how do I know if it wasn't one year and 11 months ago.

I only hate it if it doesn't shorten a number, see: 2K17

this triggers my autism

If you can inspect the element, install tamper monkey and display:block; that shit, you fuck. Btw, nice blog

Same.

this kind of shortening doesn't bother my autism. What bothers my autism is when they do it to words. Example: turning "internationalization" into "i18n", of mozilla calling electrolysis "e10s". These make me want to murder the person who thought them up.

It's quicker to say "two kay seventeen" than it is to say "two thousand and seventeen"

Except it's used more in writing than in speech

It's been a thing for over a decade, especially on the internet. How underage are you?

I hate that they use "B" for Billions instead of "G" for Giga (the standard prefix).

I think the abbreviated number is just there to save on space, you only have so little screen estate on mobiles.

Haven't thought about cheating on numbers due to single votes not being shown before, though.

>what'sa xir?

A mentally handicapped American who made up his own gender.

big numbers feel smaller with the shortening
makes 4.9m views not feel as big as 3.000.000

What kind of retard thinks that way?

I never would have realised the inconsistency if you hadn't pointed it out. People are stupid though, they wouldn't understand K for 1000 if it wasn't so common.

I hate the overpreponderance of whitespace far more.
This used to be regarded as extremely bad site design. Mobile shitters have completely fucked everything.

A E S T H E T I C

Your average normalfag.
>implying it's not anymore
I can't unironically use the web anymore save for a few select sites. Every single website is shitted up with awful design that everyone's been meme'd into thinking it's good (look up "best designed websites of 2016") and pajeetscript. I wish webfags would go back to HTML and CSS with a touch of JS, we even got a new HTML specification for the first time in what, 20 years, use it!

It still is, but because of phoneshits it's not actually thought of as being "bad", which is the problem.
It's even more absurd considering today's displays are so brightly lit to start with. It's like the optometry industry has paid everyone off to fuck up people's eyes early in life.

>now you cant see how many videos a channel has
>theater mode is retarded with the bar going from far left to far right of the sceen and upper bar black
>all numbers contracted
>removed color from videos and coments likes

It's probably because G is used to refer to groups of a thousand as well. 10,000 dollars, 10 grand, 10Gs.

But it makes for short package names
> from coolshit.i18l import translate

i, for one, like the fact the cinema mode goes above 720p now. for as long as i've been on the internet, every time any major site changed anything, their efforts have been met with torches and pitchforks. who here will admit crying over the old Google logo? "i d-didn't care much for it a-anyway..."

>turning "internationalization" into "i18n", of mozilla calling electrolysis "e10s"

don't you just love minimalism

>theater mode

>tfw I don't even see the button anymore

>It's a word you can type into your friendly neighbourhood search engine to find out about instead of wasting my time on a botswanian minifigure sculpting board. It's a meme word to refer to him/her/they and to keep the mentally ill complacent
wew lad. spent 5 times longer answering that question than yoou should have.

>A mentally handicapped American who made up his own gender.
>his

don't you just love m8m

Except normal people say "twenty seventeen".

>2017
>not a number

>Example: turning "internationalization" into "i18n", of mozilla calling electrolysis "e10s"
is this what the futures coming to? Ill c u 2m k gbye

I really like it.
I dont really care if its 4900000 subscribers or 4999999, the difference is small but its easier to read (even if write like 4 900 000)

I think a good middle ground would be to show the full number when you mouse over the text.

they did this so they can easiley delete dislikes from anything that is slightly controversial and google doesn't like. like that refugee video a few months ago. many dislikes were removed. now with this change it will be even less noticable. same with comments. i hope youtube alternatives will rise soon enough

> Like counters affect the content creation
Nice meme.

I never understood how does it work. How the fuck i18n becomes "internationalization"

t. germanfag

So you guys hate abbreviated numbers generally? Is this image 63599B or 63K?
