The local dial-up ISP guy was not a minimum wage installer but actually knew stuff and was very grumpy to be missing dinner with his wife; I think the ISP had hustled the local liberal arts college into giving them T(1?) or T(3?) backbone allocation.

I got Doom II as a 7 diskette package ordered from the (formerly) famous paper catalogue of J&R in New York City. The CD-Rom drive let me play Civilization II.

I saw my first tits on that machine but it there wasn't really GUI-based IRC, p2p, or streaming for kids at that point. I fucked around in ClarisWorks (later AppleWorks) for school and played some LucasArts games. Scans from Dungeons and Dragons books and ATE MY BALLS webrings were the naughtiest things available.

I had a Performa 631CD. Came with a bundle of software. I remember Wacky Jacks, Encarta Encyclopedia, Lemmings, Spin Doctor, that game where balls bounce back and forth against the sides of the screen while techno music played (the flipside which was shapes that would bounce around as well but make funny sounds instead). I also remember Mavis Beacon teaches typing and playing around with a text to speech option on some word processor. That computer did me a lot of good.

I still use winamp because its the best.

I am literally amazed how microsoft and apple continue to release and rerelease bloated and ugly music players that have LESS FUNCTIONALITY yet take tons more processor and memory usage. Not to mention convenient links to a fucking store.

The only thing thats holding winamp back from the future is there is no high DPI skin, but I bet someone will figure that out in the coming years.

Oh yeah, the best part about winamp is that its fucking fast. It starts instantly and everything is right where I need it, particularly due to customization (something missing from modern MP3 players for SOME FUCKIN REASON)
