I have decided to purchase pic related, found it new on ebay for ~$30, vs most other new namebrand models being well over $100 - I had recently gotten some cd's and wanted to be able to listen to them without the computer - my old shitty memorex cd player sounded like ass (i assume it has a shitty dac or something), so I was hoping to find a Sony but they're just too damn expensive new and most of these things are pretty worn these days used - has anyone else recently gotten such a thing? Can anyone vouch for Philips bass boostey vs sony Digital Megabass? I never owned anything besides Sony in the past, save for the shit memorex
The only widely available namebrand not nuts priced player is another Philips, everything else is ugly shit chinese crap that surely sounds like trash and the control layout on them all look the same and horrible - I did find a pretty white Toshiba player on amzJP, comments lauded it's useful bookmark features for audio books
idk about this thread post good cd players i guess thanks
op contributing a bit more, found this thing, apparently waterproof, looks like a damn original xbox accessory

this one is fking slot load; $300-$800 ive seen'
seems monumentally wasteful to spend so much on such an ancient single use thing, it is pretty dandy though i saw some vids
Adrian Diaz
no its not... i dug my discman, ex-hg walkman and tcd d7 dat out of storage when i was at my parents last to cash in on this nostalgia - ie sell
had to have a decent play though and media and batteries dont last long and are a huge pain...and sound quality is so shit... modern smartphones crush them... and i was talking flat without my favourite eq curves we magicly have now.. i was dissapointed and i didnt even spend money

>I was hoping to find a Sony but they're just too damn expensive new and most of these things are pretty worn these days used Care to elaborate more? I've been looking at portable cd players recently because I was in japan for a while and I got a bunch of cds and I had no way to listen them abroad. All the Sony ones I've seen have been around $20-40 but I never considered level of wear as an issue
Hudson Bell
used is $20-~80 depending on fancyness that ive seen, JP prices are probably lower even for the same model, but new-in-package is minimum $100 for ~2003+later models, most on ebay i see are $160-$250 - as for level of wear, i don't mind a little imperfection here or there but alot of the pics i see are pretty torn up i would say, and if the outside casing is at that level i would think the hinge is going to be not in the best of state either
Aiden Foster
and while i certainly wouldn't be using the player in such a demanding or uncareful way, i'd like it to look nice because i think alot of the sony ones are quite gorgeous items, the industrial design from the other brands, and especially the shit nonames (coby naxa etc), is just a joke by comparison
Zachary Gonzalez
*in most cases; i think this philips i chose looks pretty good, i like the round lcd and simple button layout
Nathaniel Nelson
here was a pretty unique find in my searchings recently, apparently you can get these for about $150 and it's the embodyment of a concept i had some months ago for a portable player which rips to itself - this indeed does just that, FLAC even, in addition to burning, it's pretty incredible - though i have to say the portability here of basically a laptop drive in a portable enclosure with battery and soc, is a bit of a stretch - i wonder if it sounds like a vacuum cleaner like most pc optical drives
whaaat ? that is most hideous stupid gimped audio player i have ever seen... might of been cool for 15minutes in the year 200...
egads thats the worst of the 00's right there... im am sure the UI would bring the average Sup Forumsentleman to tears
Ian Howard
yeah ui i assume would be a nightmare
Charles Rodriguez
II agree about the aesthetics of sony's machine, but I don't see why you're only getting ones that are that expensive. I just searched sony discman and I found this
i should just start a collection i love these things
Thomas Brown
I've already gone down that road and now i've got around 6 or 7 minidisc walkmans. I've only got one CD walkman at the moment but I still need to clean the lense. pic related, these are two of the models I own but the one on the right that I have is way more scratched up and it's missing a screw on the lid
Samuel Perez
>bass boostey >Digital Megabass buy a better quality headphones instead
Levi Collins
you're a bit limited with what you can use with a portable device like a cdplayer
Jonathan Baker
planning to get a couple new pair for diff uses, i just remember megabass making even the shitty bundled headphones sound pretty good
Julian Anderson
I have this but haven't used it in like 9 years at least
Connor Jackson
some design concept thing, looks pretty darn slicky!
Tyler Powell
I bought one of those for 1$ at a good will store. stop beeing such a retard and go outside user.
Bentley Price
Enjoy losing your boyfriend once you lose your fingers to that thing and are unable to finger his anus.
Adrian Sanders
another thing i've noticed, i've never seen a portable player with a backlit or frontlit lcd on the unit itself, some of the fancy ones with wired remote controllers have frontlit lcd's on the controller, but never on the player - i wonder if this could be something one could mod without too much trouble, like gameboy frontlight mods etc, all you'd need is 1 tiny led and maybe a resistor and somewhere to solder it up, a spot of hot glue would probably be sufficient for mounting behind the little lcd window somewhere
Carson Garcia
i owned both of those in the 90's
>no DAT walkmam
well aren't you just a huuge poser pleb
Jayden Nelson
same here
Luke King
I recently threw that shit out.
Why are they so goddamn huge?
Gavin Robinson
What model? I searched the filename and I got no results on Google and reverse image search.
seems they come in a couple colors and also theres some other similar design ones panasonic but a bit toned down in the xbox department
one of the others

it came this morning, verdict so far is positive, dbb distorting things a little sometimes but i think it depends on the mastering of the track, some sound good with it some not so much - this with some lousy ~$20 sony headphones
mfg date august 2006 lol, it's been sitting in it's clamshell box for 11 years; also turning on seems a bit finnicky, have to spam Play :/ seems to function perfectly aside from that
Nicholas Morris
:^)
Ryder Long
wait til i start a gigapets thread when i throw money into collecting 90s virtual pets!
the aforementioned shit sounding/overheating memorex, was difficult to read model number mpd8507cp
Jaxon Flores
>DAT GET THE FUCK OUT.
Caleb Powell
those were pretty cool i loved that you could use them with the computer too, i wonder why that never took off... like, portable cd players all having microusb ports so you could use them as optical drives - i guess because usb ports were huge until somewhat recently, and dvd
Gavin Rogers
Mini-disc players when???
Aaron Gutierrez
if it weren't for all the stupid confusing restrictions on atrac and different md versions... and older players not playing newer disks but sometimes they will.. md is confusing to me
I used this one with CD-RWs until 1gb+ flash players came along, which was a pretty long time. Still lying around somewhere, laser is a bit shot though.
Ethan Cruz
i never liked squareish ones for some reason, it seems weird to me or wasteful of space i guess putting a disc in a square box, which is why i don't like early gen discmans (nevermind the pre-esp tech, those things would skip from sneezing at them!)
a friend in hs had one of these hideous things
Adrian Gonzalez
is the chrome/chromium logo based on this thing? looks like thatat least from the thumbnail.
Parker Miller
ooh that is quite a resemblance, especially the original 3d logo
Mason Rodriguez
...
Luis Ross
does atrac even work on any media player program that is not sonic stage?
Dylan Lee
some things will play it i think but i dont know of anything that will create it besides sony stuff... some linux project in the works to reverse engineer a bunch of sonicstage stuff so minidisc players can be used on linux, currently ofc they require windows, some late models support some mac software
md seems like a whole big mess unless your just going to use PCM, and even then, from my understanding, recording into the md player will lock those tracks on the disk and you can't erase, but sometimes you can and it's fine.. depends on how you do it (digi vs analog) and which md version orig hi md etc, you shuoldn't need a damn chart to figure out what you can and can't do, and also recording to mo rewritable media shuold not lock tracks on it...
Robert Anderson
ofc none of these restrictions exist on any smartphone in existence or flash recording/playback device, though most of those are for voice recording
Levi Anderson
on the topic of md's, apparently someone has been autist enough to port a bunch of game ost's to md's and then print custom labels for them, this seems comfy to me but quite alot of work and expense, especially considering most game ost's are multiple discs
and this iriver thing... is not a dvd player! it only plays video cd's and music
Cooper Walker
I had that very one back in high school.
That's all I have to contribute.
Christian Price
one of the last fancy sony ones, recharging dock, monumentally thin and light d-ne20
Leo Brooks
and now it's time for pic related to properly get back into the times w
Isaac Perez
Still not as bad as Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish album.
Charles James
oh gosh i remember that awful thing, i don't need any hotdog flavored water!
Ethan King
Check your thrift store as well, they might have some good quality ones.
Colton Cox
>mfw this was the first CD i bought. >mfw i bought it from walmart >mfw walmart only sold censored albums
Ryder Gutierrez
i miss my late 90s, early 2000s baggy jeans i used to put this in my front pocket and listen to music all night at my first night job
Jordan Anderson
ive seen a few of that model on ebay, it looks gorgeous but the acryllic is usually pretty scratched up on them, maybe some polish job could be done to freshen the clear parts up
this is the previously mentioned still-available-new-reasonable-price philips
Joseph Moore
I've got a box of various CD Walkmen.
Stay Sony or Panasonic with these things, that's my advice. Also you don't need to spend nearly that much money for a Phillips when ebay has vintage and new for cheaper. The classic ones are infinitely better looking too. MD is fun too but kinda silly now.
Any suggestions for a decent sounding portable player that can be a bit on the bigger side? I only want to use it at home so I don't need some super thing portable model.
Into the Technics SL-XP5/7 but kind of pricey.
Colton Nelson
ooh those look nice
i wonder if you can get like, enclosures and mains power supplies for car systems? that might be fun
