Vega was supposed to beat Volta

>Vega was supposed to beat Volta
>Vega was supposed to be 4x more power efficient
>now amdfags are happy because it beat the 1070

What a bunch of hypocritical people

That's not what the word hypocrite means.

You're going to have to re-write your post in a way that actually makes sense, padre.

Hi friend! It seems you've found Sup Forums's technology board! You made a few mistakes though, and I'm here to help out! :D

Every board has it's own rules, as well as the global rules! Two important rules you might have missed are global rules six and three!

3. You will not post any of the following outside of Sup Forums: Trolls, flames, racism, off-topic replies, uncalled for catchphrases, macro image replies, indecipherable text (example: "lol u tk him 2da bar|?"), anthropomorphic ("furry") or grotesque ("guro") images, post number GETs ("dubs"), or loli/shota pornography.

6. The quality of posts is extremely important to this community. Contributors are encouraged to provide high-quality images and informative comments.

It's okay friend, we all make mistakes!

I blame pic related, amd hype is so funny

I told youuuuuu, 1070 performance level

AMD: A Massive Disappointment, literally Fury 2.0

> Own 1070s
> Just purchased a Vega 56
- RTG has one chance to win me over. If they gimp the fucking card #hardmode vs. pro, fuck up the drivers, if HBCC is a fucking meme, if FP16 is gimped, and/or if they don't deliver on ROCm OpenCL breakthroughs or Vulkan like they keep meme'ng, I'll never touch their shit again and sell this Vega56 at a 50% discount to whoever wants this shit.

Not a cucked fanboi to nvidya or AyyMD
Nor a hypocrite

You got one chance to deliver Raj ! Otherwise, you're fuckin done nigga !

AMA fekkit

Just wait Navi!

I'll be sampling Navi too when it finally comes out...

Really the best thing about Vegas is the custom bios.

Yep. It will be gutted 50 ways to Sunday. So, if they pull any fucking stunts w/ software gimping, they're going to get BTFO. If they go hard w/ gimps and hard locks, this shit is going up on ebay for 50% price cut and I'm never touching their cards again. That's my way of cutting my losses and risk w.r.t to sampling their vega architecture.

>Vega was supposed to beat Volta
Wait, where did AMD say that?

Ex 390x owner here AMD have consistently fucked up for so long with Radeon they don't know what a good gpu looks like.

Polaris was a step in the right direction but we never got the big Polaris in the xboner x

Vega is dogshit hot slow and 16 months late as well as over budget and expensive

Vega was launched on half finished alpha-tier drivers that have the most critical new uarch feature disabled because it isn't finished yet. Without primitive shaders, Vega remains totally front end bottlenecked by its four geometry engines. This is why Vega 56 is 100% as fast as Vega 64 at the same clocks. This is why Vega's performance relative to Pascal gets worse the higher the MSAA rate. This is why Vega is still garbage at tessellation.

Until the driver monkeys at RTG get this shit implemented we basically STILL don't have a fucking clue what Vega is actually capable of. I can't fucking believe those madmen threw Vega out the front door in this state. It's honestly absurd.

Poor volta

[citation needed]

...

I think the reason was because there was some legal binding to them shipping it at a certain day due to dates they gave shareholders.

As for the other portion of your commentary about performance, I feel as though you're correct and had to mature to this understanding. Vega's Pro line ships in two weeks :
amd.com/en-us/press-releases/Pages/radeon-pro-wx-9100-2017jul30.aspx

Thus, the drivers have to be polished by then.
Take some time for possible gimped and then you have two October when supply is going to ramp up.

I did some thinking tonight and resolved that the current spin of cards are likely top notch because they can't bin as hard from the pro line dies thus why they're saying they're losing $100. I feel the later cards will be better binned (less quality) and I feel AIBs are going to either hike the price way above MSRP or cut corners.

Either way, that puts the reference cards at a solid value. Also, water cooling blocks are only $120 or so and may come down. I don't think I want these things dumping hot air in my case from AIB coolers. I have a lot of stuff already doing that. So, a blower code is a welcome cooler until I put it under water.

I have nvidya hardware too .. Don't get me wrong.. They dominate compute. However, I am giving Radeon a chance to prove themselves to me with Vega. If they fail, they're done to me and I sell the card and recoup some money. So, I had enough reasons to buy and thus bought one.

Vega does win in compute performance. Geometry is just gimped by the drivers.

The original implied poor voltage as per the description below it and the ad was ran when AMD was promoting Polaris.
Please show me an actual AMD slide that compares Vega with Volta.

But I wanted 1070 performance level. I got 1080 level instead on RX Vega 56.

Yeah I think they are basically waiting for pro to release and trying to figure out what to gimp on RX so they don't clash. I have RXV 56 and it performs fantastic on undervolt. Easily matching a GTX 1080. If they sort the prim shaders etc out I think this will be a beast. Even if they don't I want a third party cooling solution to put on it because I tested in leaf blower mode and this thing clocks to crazy levels even on an undervolt (I just could not stand the noise). This is my current sweet spot.

This x1000, I dont understand why we don't have the "big Polaris" from the xbone x

where is volta?
oh wait they cant release it cause v100 is drawing 450 watts out of the wall with the hardware sc they had on it

oh man im gonna love when they finally release volta with async emulation and the power draw will skyrocket cause no fucking cpu will be able to handle it

Vega is ok card, problem with vega isn't it's performance or power draw, it's the price.. it's just way too high

they are already gimped everything that matters to pro on rx also no one with their right mind will buy rx to do a pro job

well in october when they finally release the damn driver we can discuss about the price if its reasonable or not
atm its not the drivers are making the card to work like a turd not even the discard is working as intented if the prim shaders (among other things) work as they are being advertise and the fp16 results on the game will be as hgh as ID said it will be then the "poor volta" will have a lot of basis

This driver talk is irrelevant.
I see GPU right now and I see it performance is as good as 1070
Nothing else matters, if it becomes better good but its not what I'm paying for, I'm paying for current performance.

Blame the memory monopoly.

drivers talk when it comes to amd is always relevant
amd traditionally gets better over time look where 290x is in relation to 780ti nowdays..
or look the monster that is 7970ghz edition where it is nowdays in relation to the 6xx cards..

Oh, it's more than relevant for the first step towards software defined GPU since forever.

Someone explain to me what the point of HBM is, it's certainly not the bandwidth.

It is. Relatively high bandwidth at relatively low power draw.

Considering that AMD holds patent for HBMeme, do they get a few cents for every unit sold, even if those units are used by AMD?

How do I undervolt and to what value?

Bump

Probably because its 1060-1070 tier performance which isnt good enough for a high end gaming gpu

Also they probably didnt wunna put it into mass production, the xboner x will probably sell good initially then drop off a cliff

Honestly i am so sad Polaris never got to see 7nm or 2nd gen 14nm

>matches a 16 month old card
>have to undervolt it and tweak the everloving shit out of it
>dsbr, prim shaders and a bunch of other features are still MIA
>still uses more power
>Shit yields, hbm2 issues high prices
>have to sell 56 and 64 $100 below cost just to stay competitive
Wow i am so surprised it sucks ass, not.

maybe in a couple of years when these mature and navi is nearly out vega will look alot better and hopefully get a 7nm respin, if not good riddance.

No, it's JEDEC standard. But yes, AMD is a good friend to DRAM cartel, especially Samsung.

>7nm respin
It's called dieshrink.
And Navi may be different to Vega in many ways.
They can merge pixel shader into compute shader (think of pixel as a primitive).
And some other bretty fun stuff.

>vega is shit
Yeah we know

>literally just wait another 2 years
t-thanks RTG

meanwhile nvidia had great performance out of the box 17 fucking months ago, fuck waiting for AMD ever again.

ive been waiting since 2016 for Vega and once it finally launched it was such a fucking catastrophe i swapped back to nvidia

Why the fuck ship cards overvolted?

Where the fuck are the AIB cards its been over a month

Then buy NVIDIA and stop crying you fucking faggot.
No, AMD is never going gaymur first again.
Selling cheaper and better hardware earned them zero marketshare.

Bump for undervolt information please

Nobody care of V100, they will probably launch the GV104, then Titan "v", then GV102, GV106 etc.

Because it was cheaper and ever so slightly better hardware that came out a year later.

Bump undervolt again. Spill it.

where the fuck is the vega48?!

I'm kinda used to AMD fuckery. I'm a tweaker anyhow so I have fun with this kinda shit. I plan on getting a third party cooling solution at some point too.

Depends. If you have good silicon you can get as low as 950mV with a decent clock. Mine sits at around 1030mV with clock set to 1627Mhz (it evens out at about 1580Mhz though after a few minutes). Memory voltage is locked at 1.25v on Vega 56. Mine only goes as high as 950Mhz before things get unstable. Even then some games don't like it that high (Rise of the Tomb Raider don't like it above 900Mhz for instance).

You will need to experiment in WattMan. Go grab GPU-Z beta as well (need to ask dev for it on the forum).

I only got my Freesync monitor with it so I don't fucking care.

Vega11 is later.
And it's going to be 30-36CUs tops.

>Waited for Vega
>Figured I could justify and aftermarket Vega 64 for the performance it gives me
>See prices on the liquid cooled card at 950€
>Regular cards are 700€+with the discount, aftermarket cards will probably be closer to 800€
>Buy a 1080ti instead
>Still not happy with it because its minimum framerates are not all that good even though the max framerate is fantastic

Maybe I should've bought an asus strix Vega 64 and hope that HBM2 comes through for me.

No, you'd have to wait™ for either HUEG dies from nVidia, or MCM from AMD.
That's at least half a year away (XBAWKS HUEG dies aka Volta).

so poolaris +200mhz?

Vega is wildly different from Polaris.

performance is the same

Of course it would be the same.
The things AMD calls "surface shader" and "primitive shader" are not implemented yet.
Only classical Domain&Hull and Vertex&Geometry ones.

polaris is dead end arch with zero potential for performance increase
vega is still unknown, it might be another 7970 in two months

No exactly a dead end, they could've gone wider.
But it's not a solution and going wider is not a thing for consoles.

>just wait

going wider is when you know it's a dead end
fiji is going wider with GCN

No, Fiji is going *taller*.
Nvidia goes wider (more GPCs - mode Raster Engines, more SMMs - more Polymorph Engiens).
Vega goes tall but pulls a trick that circumvents the inherent disadvantages of going tall.
Well that or you can buy a WX9100 or SSG and test the performance in various geometry-bound applications.

>Vega 56% done, please Just Wait
>captcha: calle ashland
Halo, Intel?

Is that the clock guy?

yeah, he's all grown up and working for amd now

>RAJA WILL BTFO NOVIDEO JUST YOU WAIT
>product is a failure
>hurr raja had nothing to do with it wait for [next product]

damn dem pooniggas grow up fast

What?
It's a bad launch.
The uarch itself is bretty fucking nice.

>Raja had nothing to do with it
No, considering the card was shipped with the drivers literally half finished, Raja definitely had something to do with it.

Fucking just ATI things.

Old man brought old traditions back.

wait™ AIB

they're both publicly traded companies, don't understand this dichotomy

poor vega

>Vega was supposed to beat Volta
>it's supposed to beat an architecture that's not even out
yeah makes sense

there is none, AMD was just warning that vega will have poor voltage but people somehow read that as vega beating volta
fanboys overhyping shit as usual

"Poor Volta"

Makes lots of sense if you aren't apologizing for AMD launching another mistake, dammit.

>poor voltage

funny, they already told everyone from the beginning about vegas poor condition

It's call overhype

Vega will best the lowest end Volta chip

But really Na'Vi is what we need to look out for, multi-die GPUs will be the future
