YouTube requires nonfree software (Javascript code) for normal use of the site; as of September 2017, nothing is visible without running nonfree Javascript code. Sad to say, youtube-dl does not help. It works by running the same nonfree Javascript code specified by the pages of Youtube.
For my own freedom's sake, I do not run the nonfree software currently required to view anything on Youtube. I advise you to refuse likewise; what's directly at stake is your own freedom.
For the sake of everyone else's freedom, it is my duty not to post anything on Youtube, or refer to anything on Youtube. I hope you feel the same, and that you join me in refusing.
Can some freetard please explain what in the hell "nonfree javascript" is? It runs in your browser, and it's not compiled, so in what situation would you not be able to see what's being executed?

For software to be free you need to be able to redistribute copies of the code, modify the code, and distribute modified copies of the code. You may be able to study JS that runs on your computer, but you don't necessarily have the complete 4 freedoms. It needs to explicitly licensed under a free software license and, if the code is obfuscated/minimised, a link to the original source code proivded.

youtube-dl is free software (I urge people to avoid the term "FOSS" *), and it is fine to download things from youtube that way. I've even done this myself occasionally, but not from my own computer, which I rarely have an opportunity to do it.
I don't link to videos on youtube because I think most people won't use youtube-dl to view them. Also because I rarely have an opportunity to look at them, and I don't want to link to them if I have not seen them. Also, watching a video is slow and usually not worth the time. Stallman approved
