I'd suggest Debian/CentOS or a copy of Winblows that you're used to.

I have a R2 and a CentOS server for my files.
My FTP is Debian based and I have a yunohost for my close friends that wants privacy and trust me.

That wallpaper was made for my Thinkpads, with a resolution ranging from 1280x800 to 1680x1050. Can't say I plan on getting a device with a 1440p display any time soon, as I don't want to buy back into Intel ME and AMD PSP.

You could look into Yunohost as your first "server"/NAS.

It's really fun.
But after a while I'd suggest you to go in a real Distro. Yunohost is purely to make life easier and convenience doesn't always come with security.
