How do I get into old computers that are so popular right now?

How do I get into old computers that are so popular right now?
Where do you get or buy them? What are you supposed to do with them?

I never owned anything older then a C2D, but I see they are really popular here and on /r/retrobattlestations.

ebay
You want to look for 486 to pentium, the rext and anything older is pretty useless
They are really expensive though

Got any recommendations, links?

Fuck off. This thread reeks of hipster and cringe.

Is that a CEE PEE SLASH EM machine?

???

Bumping

Are you kidding? My 286 still works as well as it did in 93

Sure thing, pal

>I have no interest in this thing or any knowledge of what to do with it, but it's really popular here and on Reddit, how do I like it?
Is this bait or really just how far gone Sup Forums can get?

>everything i dont like is bait

>telling Sup Forums you're a faggot redditor and then asking them how to be trendy
>not bait

>being this buttblasted because someone has an interest for something

Are you OP or just a faggot white knight that can't read? We're calling him a retarded hipster because he outright said he's only "interested" in them for their popularity on Sup Forums and Reddit and doesn't even know what the fuck to do with one, that's not what people genuinely interested in this shit are going to make a thread about if they want to get in to it.

>we
Sup Forums is not one person

kek

Who said I was talking about Sup Forums? There's just more than one of us that thinks you're a faggot.

Who are you refering as "we" then? Also, I'm not him.

We? Who's we?

It's irrelevant if you're "him" or not, you're still a faggot.

>How do I get into old computers that are so popular right now?
>get into
huh

you mean like where to find one? get on craigslist and call up old people. they're happy to lug away their old stuff. don't buy from ebay unless you're looking for individual parts, like cpus and older gpus.

...the people in here calling you a cringy hipster?
>I'm not him
Doubt it, but whatever, you're either him or a white knight, which is even worse. Fuck off either way.

Please, you are hurting my feelings.

>you mean like where to find one? get on craigslist and call up old people. they're happy to lug away their old stuff. don't buy from ebay unless you're looking for individual parts, like cpus and older gpus.
>Actually enabling hipsters to destroy old hardware and ruin a hobby for others

>on /r/retrobattlestations.
So you want one just because they became mildy popular on le ebin plebbit and not because of you interest. You'll get bored and start to think about why you wasted your money on junk very quickly because you bought an old computer due to how "trendy" it was and not due to your own interest. Do youserlf a favor and save your money.

for those that can solder its a good idea to buy a old PC because repairing them can be great to run old games and pratice programing.

IN NZ you have ebay, trademe, plentyoffish.

I Think having a old computer is okay if you can maintain them because replacement parts are few and far between.

the best level to start retro is Pentuim 4 I think they will take off as its getting really hard to find them and its a easy learning curve then say configuring a pentuim 1 MMX or pro.

10/10
Made me kek.

>pentium 4 released November 20, 2000
It's retro now :^(

Retro has to timeframe, friend

trash eighty. neat little bastards.

load "*",8

and up in the top right corner of the screen: **

how far back do you want to go? 386? meh. trs-80 and c-64? you find out just how limited they are. it's easiest to get emulators for those.

the further back you go, the less they can do. the MONECs machines could barely run basic.

he wants to get one because he wants to experience the nostalgia of discovering just how much fun it was hacking 6502 machine code on the commodore-64, by reading the programmer's reference manual and looking up the assembler op codes and then poking them into memory and running them with the SYS command. shit was so cash.

unfortunately, computing is no longer an exploration of uncharted territory. every computing platform today has guides, maps, and software to do all the shit you might ever need, so you don't have to strain your mind writing your own c-64 sprite editor / animator.

>meh. trs-80 and c-64?
>putting TRS-80 and C64 into the same timeframe
>you find out just how limited they are
>he thinks because his stupid head can't utilize perfectly capable machines means they are limited

>so you don't have to strain your mind writing your own c-64 sprite editor / animator.
why not? where's the fun in that?

>What are you supposed to do with them?
Play old games, mostly. Nostalgia. If you never had any old machines or played old games to begin with or don't have a particular interest in the technology itself, don't bother, you'll get bored with it really quickly.

yes

>If you never had any old machines or played old games to begin with or don't have a particular interest in the technology itself, don't bother, you'll get bored with it really quickly.
I never had any old machines or played those games as a kid, as I'm pretty young myself too, but I've been into it for several years without being bored
Nostalgia is a shit argument, I doubt most people who own several exotic machines do so because they owned those in the past

>I doubt most people who own several exotic machines do so because they owned those in the past
True, but in most cases they were around when those machines were current and usually wanted them at the time but couldn't get them.

The retro thing I most want is a VIC20 since I had one, followed by things like the Famicon Disk System (since it's an interesting addon to something I did have), followed by various things that people I knew had or I'd heard about.
