I did it and used it for about 1.5 yeah, ask me anything.

I use it.

Have you ever used gentoo?
How much did you use it?

Yes, I steal one from the zoo and used it for 3 weeks. It was tight, felt good in my dick friend. Any more important questions?

I have.
Best distro out there.

I installed it a few times in like 2005 or 6 to try and squeeze more web browsing performance out of my 2.4ghz Pentium 4. Haven't used it since

Gentoo is for faggots
Use Arch Linux/Manjaro/Antergos

Arch Linux/Manjaro/Antergos is for faggots
Use Gentoo

>These guys are not writing their own kernel

I did it back in 2006 if I remember correctly, and I did it from the stage 1 tarball, it took me weeks to compile everything, I learned a lot.

Which installation guide did you use ?

Installed, dropped after trying to compile PPP

Same here. I remember getting everything to work was a real pain in the ass though.

I got up to setting the mirror links, something went wrong and gave up.

I'm installing Gentoo tonight.

different poster but i used the official one on the gentoo wiki. as an installation guide it's much more informative than the current archwiki installation guide.

But before that, I must eat pizza.
I never drink while I eat and I drink nothing but Coca Cola after a pizza.
I'll install Gentoo while drinking Coca Cola.
What movie/anime do you suggest I watch while I eat my pizza, before installing Gentoo?

Why can't incestfags.shut up about their shitty anime.

OP here. I stayed up until ~5:00 AM installing Gentoo last night before going to sleep after I couldn't get WiFi to work properly.
I woke up and realized I'm an idiot and chrooted into my install from the install drive and installed the proper utilities from there.
I had to disassemble and clean out my X60 before doing this, because I knew it would overheat halfway through compilation of [anything] otherwise. Right now I'm compiling MATE on my sex60.

Right, thanks :)

I did in 2004. Used it for a good year or two. Good times.

I have used it for 8 years and installed windows 10 last week to learn more about it. I'm installing gentoo right now again because i got too paranoid with the spying. Currently trying BFQ scheduler while tabletposting.

Isn't Gentoo super easy to install now? it has it's own gui installer now.

troll harder, nigga

Installed it 4 weeks ago and im missing arch a bit.
But i will stick with it for the next 2 years and try to learn as much as i can.

I know you are baiting, but there are versions with ncurses based installers.

I've been gentooing for a few years now, it's the most fun to use OS imho, and installing it is far from difficult nowadays, really.

It's a great distro OP. Install it.

Me. I'm trying it out for the first time on my laptop.

Did the thing back in 2007 when I started to distro hop. I didn't really like it but mostly because emerging packages on my pentium 4 was not the fastest.

[spoiler]God DAMMIT gnome 2 was so damn comfy. ;_;[spoiler]

Gentoo or linux from scratch?
Upsides/downsides of both?
Which is easier to mantain? Which has more customizeability? Which one is more geared towards performance?

>its a great distro
>i do nothing but rice kernel size and mind tilling window manager
>look at my color scale
>i'm so edgy cuz i can follow a tutorial i found on google

stop promoting shit that you don't even understand kiddo

Gentoo is a fine distro, if you're a N337.

owned

Gentoo
LFS is *not* for your regular dude, not saying you couldn't do it, since it is literally following some instructions, but it doesnt have the usability that gentoo has almost out of the box.
Obviously LFS is more customizable.
Gentoo is easier to maintain and as for performance, I doubt you'd notice the difference but it all depends on what you expect to do with it.

user, your elitism is showing

I tried but it was a bad burn and my last CD

gentoo has the best infinality implementation that only requires patched freetype and some custom fontconfig files. No need to install patched display libraries like all the other distros do and you can even use eselect to easily enable different sets like windows, apple or infinality rendering.

What's the objectively the best distro?

the one I'm using

Source Mage GNU/Linux

TempleOS

For bait's sake

What kind of food should I give him?
Do I need a special room for him?
How to tam him right?

tell me that isn't true

there isn't one.
But I would say that openSUSE is the most complete distro. It has a GUI for almost everything and a lot of nice tools like snapper. It also has a lot of stupid decisions built into it which keeps me from recommending it to anyone.

Everyone I try to install gentoo I come to the same to 2 problems I wish someone would help me I can't get wifi and when I install firefox it says I don't have the right USE flags . Am I retarded could someone help me

I used it as the main os from late 2009 to early 2014, after Sup Forums told me to install it. I tried to go back last year, with KDE this time.

The thing is, even on the promise of being a ricer's wet dream, it kind of fails to deliver.

Take the compiler, for example. The stable brach is... version 4.X, 5.X was unstable, and 6.X experimental. Naturally, I tried to set 6.X as the main and it worked -- most of the time. Some packages needed 5.X, some even 4.X to compile. They were KDE dependencies, so I set it manually for the sake of reliving my happiest years. Good luck updating anything, though...

I also tried to configure my system to use Python 3.X as main. It kinda worked in the end I think? Until you try to use pip... it writes on system paths, breaking many tools (including the package manager). This is true for Python 2 as well.

You might say that one should use stable packages system-wide, possibly configure manually when it is necessary to go bleeding edge, it doesn't make much practical difference in the end if you're not psychotic. True -- neither does using Ubuntu.

it isn't true

is it true though?

What's the blurry terminal?

It's not quite as bad as it seems

Urxvt, I have a script that downscales and blurs the background and, then I use it as a rooted background in urxvt.

kek

Oh it's true. You can easily verify. I'm also heavily involved in the Gnome project and work from a Windows laptop. Gotta love containers. :)

>I am a vim user but I'm considering switching back to emacs.
The only not cringe thing in this whole interview. Can't believe that this man is the creator of the most elitist distro.

I used to use it. Switched to FreeBSD though. You can either compile packages and get the control of USE flags but if you want a package fast there's a binary package manager available. You can also set up a binary package repo from previously compiled packages in case you want that, but I haven't done it.

Gentoo?

most of your problems is because they lack maintainers. Last time i looked pip didn't work as root so you can't fuck up your install today, the compiler is nowadays 5.4 stable and 6.4 in testing. Still waiting for gnome 2.24, though.

Of course you shouldn't blame gentoo for upstream depending on specific gcc versions, ubuntu and co have to deal with the same shit, you just don't see it.

This. Vagrant is my jam. Fuck the Linux desktop forever.

How long is a yeah?

Ya tekken th piss m8?

Euphoria

So, technically the creator of Sup Forums favorite distro is a etilist fag that uses windows AND mac with even google chrome and only touch linux for userspace and server shit
Sup Forums fell for his own meme

Post script, please!

Retard. He left Gentoo to create Funtoo, a fork

Not currently in my machine, in a couple of hours if the thread is still up I will.

>It has a GUI for almost everything
In ruby.

It is his own distro though

hi
