I'm pretty sure Newpipe doesn't have ads. Or you can get adaway which removes all ads but requires root.

You can run 'pi hole' on literally any distro. A VM would work fine for this ..........

There's a developer on XDA that cracked a recent version of YouTube to enable no ads and background playback. It's just some flags in the code that you set so the server thinks you have YouTube red. Just side load the APK, disable the original YouTube app, then install the cracked version. Works great.
