Even though people may disagree on iphones other features being subpar, apple's chip design blows any doubters away. Now why is this? Did they get lucky with their engineers or there something else at play here?

Shitwrecker-kun.

They hired Jim "the shit wrecker" Keller a few years ago. Based Jim left some time back, but his magic still hasn't worn off.

He designed A4 and A5 which werent even that good.

bump

Wait till Samsung releases Ryzen CPU chip phones in 2019

Apple's hardware has always been pretty good. Their chip is nothing super special, but it will work better than others because they are the only ones using it. They literally built a chip around what they needed. That's why it will work. Android is all about horsepower, iOS is always about what they need.

Also I'm pretty excited to see this stainless steel phone

>. Their chip is nothing super special

But it is special

No it's really not. Just the same ARM Based chip every phone uses. It has the 2 fast cores/ 4 efficient cores but that's been a reality for years

It has a few more things like a custom GPU and what not but under the A11 Bionic pretty cover, it's an ARM chip

>custom GPU

How does it affect battery life if you actually use it?

So the front end (logic) is done by ARM and the physical design is done by apple?

Do you know how ARM works? ARM doesn't make the physical chip, but they make the architecture and they test/standardize/ect. A company (Apple, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments) buys the designs and makes whatever changes they want then either does it themselves or hires a company to produce the chip

ARM doesn't make chips because the facility to do it is billions and billions of dollars

Why are Apple ARM chips the fastest in every benchmark?

I know globalfoundries and tsmc make the actual chip when provided the design by Apple, Qualcomm etc.

Yet the logic design and Physical design engineers at Apple have made their chip better than qualcomm right even though both are based on ARM

They are powerful, but also, iOS is heavily optimized for them and viceversa.
For the same reason that Ryzen hackintoshes lose some performance in some Apple apps, they are optimized for Intel only pathways

The basic gist:

1) The die size is HUEG. See pic related, note the difference between the Hurricane and the others (the big cores), and the Zephyr and the A53 (the small cores)

2) Why didn't the others make their cores as big? Because it will be expensive - oh wait the iPhones are expensive too

3) Apple chose the wide and slow design - think a big engine with low-ish max RPM. The other guys went the opposite cause of >muh GHz marketing (among other reasons). Ever seen Apple talk about clock speeds on their product launch? They don't need to. Thing is however Apple's chips have been clocking higher and higher each gen, which means higher power consumption right?

4) Because of their sheer volume, the manufacturing guys (TSMC, Samsung) have to Ben Dover for Apple. Apple will always have dibs for the best manufacturing process - high clocks, low power, high density etc. They probably paid less for them too

5) They spent a lot more on R&D than the others. They got the best engineers early on. The groundwork has been set. Their lead will only get bigger

Howd you knw all this? Are you a hardware engineer

Tegra was the last chance from android but that tanked.

Need some Rupees op?

Apple spends more on R&D every year than IBM makes. They spend more than Intel or AMD.

Just let that sink in.

No, they don't use anything from ARM aside from the ISA, the A series have been completely custom designed (except for the GPU), the architecture is completely made by Apple just like Qualcomm used to have custom architectures with Scorpio

yes cause one thing i have always heard people say, "i wish my phone had more computing power"

oh wait i have never heard anyone say that, cause it's a fucking retarded sentiment. thanks for giving me a chip that will turn more of my battery life into heat though.

and they do stupid shit like removing ports and features in all of their products. money fucking wasted, good thing they have a koolaid drinking following to cult up their products.

I just find this funny, because I remember when people were saying, "The iPhone can do anything! Why do you need a PC?"

And, well, modern PCs will always be more powerful. That's why.

This. The last "quad-core processor" I got on my phone only meant that I was paying more power for apps I wasn't constantly using. These phones are more powerful than my desktop 5 years ago

but the iphone was never able to do everything a pc could and will never be able to do all the things a pc could, it does enough.

how about a reasonable chip and a bigger battery that would be actually functional.

instead they make fashion accessories for the tragically hip.

>Now why is this?

They don't run everything through a JVM.

they probably have a critical mass of middle aged white guys to make up for all the pajeets and retards conspiring to fuck everything else up in IT.

head of their chip development teams is an arab

Iron shiek ?

You mean (((JEW)))

Yeah, seems really Jewish to me user.
