How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (R5 1400 - If you need multithreading
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use, not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>VEGA
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM, 3200 MHz is ideal

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

>1700x
why thou
worse value than 1700
worse perf than 1800x

guys shall I get a sapphire vega 56 or a 1070 MSI/ASUS it's almost on the same price

or to wait until ASUS launch the vega gpu series?

You can't even buy a vega 56 right now

is am4 aio bracket kit compatible to all coolers?

i mean the thermaltake one is compatible with corsair?

Sorry user but here where I live I can buy one and it's almost on the same price as the 1070, the thing is did it flopped so hard that I should avoid to buy it at any cost or to wait to buy the asus vega model?

is there a case with vertical 5.25" bays like this? i can find plenty of "double" cases that have them horizontally but they seem like a waste of space

why is my 2 year old ssd trah compared to the one i bought today?
both were 150$ at the time i bought them btw. brazy

gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-RX-Vega-56-vs-GeForce-GTX-1070

aging. maybe improvement of tech and quality

what do you want to use the bays for?

...

hot swap trays

Fill up the new one 60% and test. All of my drives benchmark like dog shit because they're all at 80% use

the reference Vega 56 has great OC potential if you are willing to put a custom cooler on it yourself.
Otherwise you are better off waiting for the custom models, but it could be weeks before any are available, let alone cheap.

Critique my build, gonna be using it mainly for music production, some gaming, and light video editing.

Not 100% set on the monitor or graphics card, open to suggestions of course.

Step up to a 1080p Meme-sync monitor or spend the shekels on a 1440p version. Also, Ryzen is trash. Wait for Coffee Lake.

If G4560 is not available would a G4600 be fine for a office/normalfag PC?
All he cares about is that he is fast so im putting a SSD on it.

you'd probably be better off with the 1600 unless the production you plan on doing requires heavy multi threading.

If the 1060 is the GPU consistent with the kind of frames you want for gaming then it's a decent pair with that monitor

Im looking for a good monitor for 1080p gaming, I live in Argentina. I can spend 10.000ARS but it's flexible.

yeah it's fine

Horizontal bays are your only choice AFAIK. Air 540 has vertical bays, but only 2.

Any reason not to go with a conventional tower with the front full of 5.25" bays?

drives block the airflow

Why do you say Ryzen is trash? Isn't the extra cores better for my DAW vs. single core performance?

>Covfefe Lake

Have you seen the reviews?

It's not even out yet
wait for official data

High temps (over 100c with an AIO) , shit overclocking (stone wall at a puny 4ghz), high powerdraw (220w TDP), bad RAM compatibility, Sandy Bridge IPC, the list goes on. Coffee Lake will have moar corez, overclock to 5GHz and will be a smarter buy.
Yeah, bettee IPC than Poozen.

>Air 540
official benchmarks have already released. the 8700k is actually slower and less powerful than a Ryzen 5 1600X.
Official benchmarks were on a preproduction HP Omen with a production ready 8700K

There is no IPC improvement with covfefe lake
It's losing to the 1600x

>shilling a leak this hard
Ryzen only has Sandy Bridge IPC bucko.

No but it went full AMD and added more cores.

The 8700k is literally just a 6800k with slightly higher IPC

The average person gets along just fine on two cores. Sup Forums was happy with having four. Then Ryzen comes along with its dogshit clocks so AMD added moar corez to compensate. Now Sup Forums thinks Ryzen is a godsend when in reality all its done is cemented AMD's placement in the low end/poorfag market.

>Intel Core i7‑5775C

What the FUCK is this?

The way Ryzen is built, what we got was the worst possible outcome for Ryzen. And it still managed to beat Intel, even if each core was less powerful. Zen 2 is getting a major IPC boost and better overclocking because there is nowhere for Ryzen to go but up.

That would be one of 2 CPUs released for the mainstream Broadwell generation, which became rebranded as Skylake, which became rebranded as Kaby Lake

Just ignore the retarded Intel shill.

Gimped unlocked CPU with better graphics.

Gimped but unlocked?

>finished building computer
>10 ltsb just werks
>ram is stable at 3202MHz 14-14-14-34
>1700 is stable at 3.6GHz at stock voltage (stock cooler and warm room)

life is good boys, feels good to finally have a not shit computer again
>inby the intel shill calls it shit because ryzen

Yeah, their main selling point was Iris IGPU which is supposed to be as good as a mid end AMD APU but you cant push them that far.

Just a reminder to enter group policy and disable.
>Windows compatibility telemetry service
>Windows Updates
>Windows defender out all things

I'm getting my last parts Thursday and I can't wait to build. going from an a8-6600k to ryzen 1700

can I safely set my motherboard on a cloth mousepad when building? specifically the extended corsair mm300

What monitor under $100 to get? Don't care about gaming.

The one at your local thrift store.

youre in for a world of difference man. ive used both of those chips and there's a huge difference. fuckin enjoy

any reason to upgrade from 4790(non-k) to 1700?

Benchmarks showing single core performance to be basically identical. Is 4 more cores worth $350?

do you need the 4 more cores

Huh. That Enermax Ostrog Lite case? $25 after rebate & promo code at Fry's right now.

$25 for a case with a basement and pre-plugged top-set front ports.

I'll say this. Enermax may be a no-name brand, but they package a fuckton of value into this little thing.

I play gaymes mostly and compile a bit /w python/C

wait for zen 2

ASUS VS monitors.

>Is 4 more cores worth $350?
You're the only one who can answer this question, friend.

Is it a bad idea to buy a mobo or cpu this month despite not going to be able to have a functioning rig until early 2018? Should i wait until i have all the dosh at hand or piecemeal a 1200x/b350(ATX)/8gb/gtx670 comp over the next few months?

game?

this is what you get for buying ASUS you fucking cunt.

Worst brand in the world, would literally rather use a shitty PNY or ZOTAC over that cancerous fucking rband.

Would be better to wait out until then and see if there's gonna be any good deals in the meantime for what you want. Don't want to spend money now for something you can't use and find out two weeks later there was a good sale for it.

Enermax makes some decent fans

That's probably it

uv cathodes came but i cant fit it in the corner of the case its like 6mm too long, whats the best way to remove some of the acrylic?

Enermax was a pretty big brand in power supplies in the 2000s along with Antec and the like, but they pretty much got eclipsed by EVGA, Corsair, and such now

are 4 core / 4 threads gonna be relevant for the foreseeable future for gaming?

ETS2 with truck/trailer mods.
I guess ill get on a pcpartpicker. Any recs on (cheapish) non timebomb PSUs? preferably modular because im going to use a enlight 7237 i have laying around to save $50 or so

Should I buy this monitor right now?

Usually $650 but only $500 on sale with discount code:

microcenter.com/product/478876/Agon_AG271QG_27_LED_Gaming_Monitor_w

>27"
>IPS
>2560x1440
>165 Hz
>G-Sync

its these cubes i need to shorten, thinking about sanding it

what the fuck is the difference between a core and a thread?

im no expert, but that seems like a bad idea

theyre is like a good 15mm extra that doesnt need to be on it. ill see if i can find a better pic

on a scale of 1 to 10 how bad does a game running at 1440p look on a 4k monitor?

>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
kek

...

one rapes your ass the other rips a hole in your stomach fucks the hole and then lynches you with your intestines

youtube.com/watch?v=IkdBs21HwF4

>Core
Makes operations and stuff.
>Thread
Transports that stuff

>Try to order that case from Fry's website
>Their checkout refuses to go through
A technology-based retailer who can't even keep its website operational. 10/10. I wonder why there are so few these days.

Has anyone tried the 3200 MHz g-skill flare x with asrock ab350 itx board?

>asrock
>ever

Is bomb. AM4 will apparently be a thing until at least 2020. Perfect for poorfags like me.
pcpartpicker.com/list/xDNTKZ

Link for assembly doesn't work anymore. Does anyone have a different guide or better yet the specific tools I need (down to the philips screwdriver size)?

>assrock

Asus STRIX vs Zotac AMP Extreme
these are my favorite 1080ti's on the market, here's my dilemma:

>asus strix
>extremely popular

>zotac amp extreme
>higher boost and base clocks

I almost bought zotac amp extreme but cancelled order after doing further researching:

youtube.com/watch?v=iiLSxhyiZss&t=85s

Zotac is shit

Asus is shit

Do not support any company with such poor customer support.

Buy EVGA. the FTW3 is the best 1080 ti on the market rn.

clocks don't fuckin matter for the 1080 Ti, the FTW3 is so over engineered it'll literally never fuckin break and even if it does,EVGA is the best in the business for customer support.

>Order something on Amazon, item wasn't eligible for prime
>Says could arrive between 8th-13th
>Been sitting in same same town 30min away since Friday.

Holy fuck, I figured they'd just deliver it on Monday, but these fucks are literally waiting until tomorrow.

No it was not.
Thats not what they said you moron.

>evga
>ever needing customer support

>order off massdrop
>wait 20 days after delay before applying for a refund
>get money back
>gets sent anyway
best import tax ive ever paid

I guess I could go with slightly worse gigabyte or chinkshit biostar instead.
Fuck off or answer my question.

damn lucky boi
I wonder if I can do that with my HD6xx in December

Called into Fry's. Ordered the case. Customer support was very good. Website wasn't that good, but customer support dude was a champ.

How long do you guys think it'll take for people to fuck off bitcoin and let GPU prices fix themselves?

>gigabyte
>worse than assrock
are you having a giggle?

what did u get instead?

Gigabyte's ab350 itx is complete dogshit

so get a larger case and an atx board assrock is NEVER acceptable

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz
MSI B350 PC MATE ATX
WD 1TB Internal Hard Drive
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Superclocked Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650W ATX Power Supply
Minus case does this look alright for a first time build. Should I swap anything out to get max performance? Looking to run games like battlefield and pubg in 1080.

they're fine. fuck off with muh premium brands, bugman.

I built a pc a few years ago and it is showing its age. It has a i3 ivy bridge processor, 4gb or ram and a gtx 650.

Should I just upgrade ram and gpu or should I consider a whole new build?

How much should I spend on a moderate gpu?

See OP image

>garbage cheaply made poorly soldered nonsense
>fine
