First for Source Mage GNU/Linux.

Hey guys,
I would like to jump on the linux wagen.
What kind of version should I get my hands dirty with at the start? I am really confused with all those versions available - Ubuntu, Arch, Debian, Kali...etc. Any difference?
I got an old HP laptop that suffers from Vista, just lying around - it should be a good cure for it and hopefully help me learn...

I am sorry i just cannot stand Richard. I like his message on "Free Software" but if you look at his fucking website it's just cancer.

He's a commie that deserves a free helicopter ride.

Fucking hell it just keeps getting worse.

Go back to school, kid.

install gentoo

You are part of the problem

Your underage is showing.

4.13.1

Ubuntu: it's based on Debian and designed for the average user, so it will probably work out of the box.
Arch: The opposite of Ubuntu. Comes barebones. It is kind of a DIY distro were you configure everything yourself. Packages are bleeding edge. There are Installers which do some of the configuration for you, but don't expect everything to work out of the box
Kali: Collection of Tools for pentesters. Only use if you are an pentester

Other distros you may want to use:
Fedora, OpenSuse
Just try one. Ubuntu is a good start. I suggest to use Cinnamon as your Desktop Environment. It is very Windows like and works and looks good without configuration. There is a flavor of Ubuntu that has it preinstalled

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Thank you for the kind replies.

I have some background with programming and system knowladge but it is quite limited.
I am thinking about changing to Linux to expand my reach with different aspects since I have been of Windows this whole time.
I am not looking for a replacement but rather a new expirence and challenge.
So what comes in mind:
1. I don't want to be spoon-fed and try a windows-similar distro. What should I try first? (that's eliminates Ubuntu I guess?)
2. What is the difference between flavors and DEs?

Is LFS worthwhile? Does it actually teach you properly how Linux works?

Second for the wizards

Source Mage GNU/Linux

1) Install Arch or Sup Forums's favorite meme distro. I run Hannah Montana Linux and Black Arch.
2) Distros have a base kernel, packages, libraries and other such stuff added on top. Someone just took the time to create a list of software and then create an installer with the software prepackaged.

install ubuntu
Mot much, reading documentations teaches alot more. If you want something interesting to read for a start, check out the pseudo-filesystem Linux uses (proc), learn how to manage modules, compile your own Linux customized to your needs.

Get the fuck out of here with your niche distro no one is gonna use.

>Is LFS worthwhile?
No, use Source Mage GNU/Linux.
It's LFS with a package manager.

Wow, rude.

2021 is going to be the year of Wine/Linux

>never heard of it
>nobody uses it

New to linux, what is source mage? is it a program or a distro?

>Be a true wizard
>No time for commoners
1&2>/dev/null

It's a source based distro, like Gentoo, but quite different.
It's more friendly than Gentoo.

Pretty nice source based system (like Gentoo) with many neat things. Much stuff is written in bash, even the package manager, which makes it easy to hack the whole thing to your needs.

i like his hat, certainty makes him more friendly

First try a net installer, or netinstall. Is any barebones installation of a distro. Do't go for Arch, go either for Ubuntu Server or Devuan.

As you are a programmer the proper difference between DEs is at the core the selection of bundled software, but for normies would be the "look and feel". You can make any DE yourself by selection window managers, file managers, etc.

Also check the proper way of programming in a GNU/Linux environment pastebin.com/SRZakc07

I only advise SMGL for advanced users.

Anyone using neovim? What plugins do you use if any?
Are all vim plugins compatible?

I just want to have a simple setup with the project tree (I think nerdtree does this?), nice tabbing (maybe just need to learn buffers), some kind of way to debug/lint if relevant to language.

Is it one of the system's that "just werk". im building a budget PC, that i intended to use for both learning Linux and gaming (not sure if im just gonna tough it out with WINE or go Dual boot, or do a GPU pass through) and so far it seems like VOID would be the best to do it with, but ill take any advice people are willing to give.

Does anyone here run a comfy dual-boot setup where you can just pick up where you left off, regardless of which OS you booted from?
Like having Firefox profiles, qbittorrent data and stuff like that all synced between GNU/Linux and Windows?

Is something like this doable?

Pure source based distro, maybe is like gentoo in some areas but is more flexible and barebones (yes, is possible). Pretty nifty if you are a developer actually, as you can track every package that goes in your computer and other magic tricks.

install ubunut

GPU pass through is a meme to trick Wintards into Loonix and nobody on Sup Forums ever managed to make it work, proof me wrong.

Well, you do need to have some knowledge before you try SMGL.
I suggest you start with Devuan (it's Debian without systemd, you don't want systemd obscuring everything if you want to learn stuff).

SMGL is the opposite of what you call "out of the box", the wizards by no means pretend to invite people new to the world of GNU/Linux to this distro. Even to use wine you would need to know a trick to use qemu with 32 bits to make it work for 32 bit binaries.

Go for Ubuntu.

Does dwm support gaps?

What are some cool terminal commands?

Yes, there's a patch.

Cool.

If you have the time, install arch Linux. It is not very difficult but maybe a bit frustrating and lengthy. There is a guide on theArchWiki. You won't be a Linux expert but you at least learn what components your system has and what they do. Beside that just USE anydistro...

What would happened if I put windows on it?
And yes this is /fglt/ related

I may as well give you this installation guide for Source Mage pastebin.com/qqaUJMDC

great thread

The bizcard suddenly ceases to be useless.

No, it's retarded and anyone trying to do it is retarded.
Stick to your Windows and play your games, kid.

Why such pedantry?
Calling GNU/Linux just Linux
is the same as calling
Microsoft Windows just Windows
or Google Chrome just Chrome
An often unnecessary detail.

Enjoying your first week on the internet? Where are you from and how poor are you that you just got an internet connection?

ok kid

>Friendly.

Anyway, why do you think it's a bad idea?

Agreed. Last threads were pretty bad. Nice to see good posters back.

>Calling GNU/Linux just Linux
>is the same as calling
>Microsoft Windows just Windows
>or Google Chrome just Chrome
no, calling GNU/Linux just Linux is the same as calling Windows just NT or calling Google Chrome just Blink
GNU/Linux is the name of the OS
Linux is just the kernel

alias'd, ty

Because even with an UEFI system and SSD it will still take more than 10 seconds from shutdown to desktop. Only retards would wait that long to switch between simple programs.

The only valid reason to have two operating systems installed on one computer is if you boot into one of them only for an hour or so and only once a day.

The idea was more like you needing to use some specialized program while having all your other basic stuff keep working seamlessly.

>GNU/Linux
POOin/LOOnix

hey all, i have some experience with linux (used it as my main OS for a number of years about 5 years ago) and I'm comfortable working with the terminal and all with both arch and debian. I'd really like to move back to linux as my main OS, but I need windows for some applications for work. I know that running windows in a VM with a gpu passthrough is a good option, but I've never worked with this configuration before. Any advice or tips? I'd really like to just get up and going, dont mind using something like debian, xubuntu, or whatever to speed the process along
if it matters id be passing an nvidia gpu through, which iirc ill have to change some setting to lie to the gpu to tell it it isn't in a virtual environment (thanks nvidia), is this correct? also, ill be using windows 8.1 as the virtual windows OS, if that matters.

How is closing your programs, rebooting into a new operating system and opening the programs again "seamless"?

are you sure it's worth taking the risk?
if windows suits your use case, don't fix what isn't broken

back to 9gag with you

Hi everyone, I just installed linux as a VM. I decided on debian, seeing as it has a lot of derivatives.

I am studying system engineering and I am in my first year, programming in C for now; then later java, AFAIK. The pace is sort of slow in academia, so I decided to use my free time to expedite my learning.

I have downloaded some online resources about learning the inner workings of linux and using the shell to maneuver and manipulate elements of the system.

Ultimately my question is this: What task or exercises can I do to practice? What does a linux system administrator do on a daily basis?

Thanks in advance.

>What does a linux system administrator do on a daily basis?
Nothing. Running cron jobs which run shell scripts that do work, drinking coffee, scratching balls.

id be installing on another disk alongside my current windows install, wouldn't be fully switching until everything was working. I'd really like to move back to linux as my main OS, really it's just one or two programs holding me over on the windows side, as well as a few games. Beyond that though there's really not much, and I dont like the direction windows is headed in, or a lot of "mainstream" software, etc. I've always had a good experience with linux as well and I like the idea of FOSS software, and I'd like to support it. So yeah, i think it's worth the risk.

Is Devuan really usable?
Can you install non-free drivers on it?

>Can you install non-free drivers on it?
I don't see why not.

>Is Devuan really usable?
Depends on the user.

>GNU/Linux
gNU-Male

yes and yes.

nonfree drivers don't depend on memed so far.

Not joking, installing distros like arch, gentoo, and more recently source mage (I recommend this) help me a lot. Troubleshooting builds character, especially with networking stuff. Get familiar with config files, aka dotfiles, then do some bash scripting.

What are the downsides of running a systemdless distro?

Install Gentoo

GNOME won't be bleeding edge, that's it. Literally everything else is more updated than with systemd distros.

A better question you should be asking yourself is "What are the benefits of using a SystemD distro?"

Does anyone have a color script that displays the color codes like the one in this screenshot?

>>With ffmpeg:
Neat, now I've something new to play around with.

I plan on running plasma, anyway.
Should I do it, then?

Sure. What are them?

my ssd doesn't boot up after i removed it from my laptop and re inserted it. the luks partition, the efi partition still exists when i check it out from a live usb. can i fix this thing or can i decrypt it? the live distro throws up an error when i try to decrypt it.

How are you trying to access it
