/lap/-Laptop General

Tried a whole bunch of laptops and looking at the Zenbook flip and Aspire E15. I have tried both laptops and can't decide between the two.

Battery life is the most important thing and they both get 7-9 hours no problem. Can't decide if I should fall for the 13.3" portability meme or stay with the comfy 15.6" with num pad.

how's the x1 carbon 5

Numpad or go home. Thank me when typing in anything from spreadsheets to bank account information.

Notebookcheck and laptopmag have pretty good reviews. I tried a T430s and the thing was light and fucking great keyboard. I say go for it.

It really does make things so much easier when getting typing things. Only issue is size but as long as I get a bigger bag I don't think I should worry so much, thanks.

Try and X230 with a 9cell. The battery is amazing and it feels so much light than it looks. ABS plastic is amazing.

I did and the screen was too cramped for me.

oh this one was really over priced here compare to it's guts, but that's how it usually go with the business models like my old hp elitebook I am shitposting from here now too
I can't wait until they ship them with the new line of processors.
My main is a desktop replacement that's 3yo after xmas.

I have to wait till then, and I'll get a new desktop replacemnt and degrade the other one to shitposting replacement instead.

But if you need it for werk, study or whatever you can't wait ofc.
>maybe I'll get a new desktop instead first this time

Help pls

Should I buy this
>11.6 ASUS L203NA-FD037TS

looking for
>below 1kg/2.2lbs (carry everyday)
>4 Gb RAM
>USB type-C charging (so I don't carry a heavy charger)
>below 300€ (refurbished or used is fine)
>screen as large as possible under above constraints

rMB
>900g
>9h battery life
>mobile processor

literally this. fucking eye-cancer screen habit of thinkpad series.

I actually ordered a x1 carbon as the other user mentioned it. They have IPS screens way better than the TN panels.

Taking the zenbook flip back. It was kind of slow and the aluminum wasn't my favorite.

Buying my Mom a budget laptop. Whats good for under 250$?

Anyone that has a cheaper and/or better alternative for the Surface Laptop? I don't feel like spending 300 bucks for 4GB RAM desu although I really love the Macbook/minimalistic look it has. I might just get the 4GB RAM version but I have a habit to keep 10 tabs open with Chrome.

Can someone recommend me a notebook that has upgradable RAM and disk slots, with a really good screen/panel quality?
Most devices either has good screen but locked hardware, or upgradable internals but terrible screen.
I've had to go back as far as 2010 to find a model that fits the bill, an HP 8740w, upgradable internals, good i7, but most importantly, it has a 10bit dreamcolor panel, covers both sRGB and adobe RGB

Anyone knows of other laptops that covers this? I don't mind gamershit too

Why are laptops all still so shit? Nothing has improved since fucking 2012.

How expensive?

Well below $1000 should be good, there's that amoled thinkpad but it's way too expensive

WHENS RAVEN RIDGE

300 shackles for 4gb sounds alright- check benchmarks for the cpu and gpu. Also 10 tabs are no problem at all, desu. I bought a hp laptop without an OS for ~300 a few months ago.

Miix 520

Dell Precision m7510 - great laptop or overpriced toy for goyims?

I meant 300 extra desu, on top of the already (((premium))) price of 1000 bucks
i'm not really looking for a 2-1 in though, I won't probably won't even use the tablet mode desu

Any suggestions on a modern laptop with non-retarded keyboard layout, specifically the Ins/Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDn block? Like the Thinkpads and business HPs used to have a long time ago.

This?

Yeah, it looks really good although it isn't available in my country unfortunately

Been looking at the available laptops with 1070 but the only half acceptable model seems to be a xmg p507 wich also has lots of upgrade options later. I hope companies stop with this dumb IM A GAMER BUT I DONT KNOW WHERE WASD KEYS ARE design shit and develop some powerful laptops that are acceptable in public like aorus x5 for example but paying above 2k is not an option for me.

$400 for macbook retina?
Subpar processor but 8gb and a 256gb SSD
and 12" - IPS - 2304 x 1440 screen..

If the processor was a better it'd be an obvious choice but now..

Actually it's just the macbook 12", not retina. I don't really know macs.

Man that 3:2 aspect ratio of the Surface is amazing.

Looks ok, but I'd find having a 11.6 inch laptop too small for my usage and the 1366*768 screen isn't good either.

For $400? If you can put up with the crappy keyboard on the 2015-2016 models, go for it.

>mobile processor
you know, if this thing cost maybe $800 I'd be totally cool with that

Dude it's more than abs

>mobile processor that throttles down to core2duo

Maybe once or twice a year I need to use my GPU for a DX9 game which is mostly CPU intensive. My current laptop has a GTX 940m

I mainly use it for bedside browsing/youtube videos and something to take lecture notes with.

The USB ports are falling apart, the battery lasts only 2.5 hours which is unacceptable for my 3-4 hour lectures, usually sitting too far away from an outlet. Keyboard also is missing some keys

The thing I love about this laptop is how cool it runs, it's an ASUS X555UB-NH15. Stays constant 30~60C. I'd like to keep it that way, and not scorch my skin like old HP Pavilion laptops.

It struggles with 8GB of RAM with even my light browsing/video watching usage.

Desktop video recording here and there, drivers usually crash if I'm running any more than 20 tabs of Chrome.

I'm in the market for a new laptop, I'd like it to >Last at least 3+ years
>Decent battery life
>Decent build quality
>Either has 12~16GB of RAM or has the ability to upgrade it to that much
>Same with the SSD, I don't care about size so long as it's not Budget $500~700.

forgot to mention prefer 13"~15"

Best build quality, trackpad and keyboard for

Really tempted to buy a laptop just for programming. Keep seeing Deal of the Day on Best Buy, usually under $300 and even under $200.

Xiaomi

I bought an XPS 13 9360 and it's a pretty good laptop. I too had a focus on battery life and the XPS13 actually does last about 10 hours if all you do is browse the internet. That changes to 4 hours if you are using a heavy application. I got the i5 8GB ram without the touch screen, because that one saves battery the best. It goes reasonably fast when needed to and pretty much everything but the CPU and RAM can be serviced and upgraded. So far this is a very nice laptop computing system.

The only annoying thing is that the trackpad is close to the keyboard so sometimes my hand swipes by it and the line of text I'm writing gets changed while I'm typing. You have to be always arare of this when you type or it will constantly screw you up.

The screen is great but only one usb C port or w/e
I'm not a sucker for IPS so I can find way better specs for that price actually.

Might be able to sell it a bit more later tho..

I just pulled the trigger on the X1 Carbon; got it for 1500 bucks with 16Gb of RAM, 1Tb SSD, i7 processor and the upgraded resolution display. I can't wait for it to get here.

>t. Ching Chong Bing Bong

Take your pick from a dozen chromebooks. It's a bit of a hurdle, but comes with the nice bonus of not having to play repairman/AV watch anymore.

Can I get RJ45 (for 80/60 internet speeds) on a laptop who has only usb 3 ports?

>13.3 OLED 1440p Touch
>best keyboard you will ever use
>desktop class GPU
>same cpu as a desktop i5 7600k but with HT
>best build quality you will ever feel, rigid as a board
>best eGPU solution on the market
>TB3
>usb type a
>less than an inch thick
>still under 6 pounds

It's a bit heavy, but everything else about it is fucking genius. The pictures do not do it justice, you have to see and feel this thing in person to know how great it is.

>$3000
>300% what you'd pay for something that will not die on you for no reason

The base model, which is more than enough for 95% of use cases, is like 1000 bucks. Can be had for cheaper on ebay.

What's the exact model name to search for?

Literally Alienware 13 R3

ebay.com/itm/Brand-NEW-Alienware-13-3-Intel-i5-7300HQ-8GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-Gaming-Laptop-AW13R3-/172867045255?hash=item283fadc787:g:RkMAAOSwo-NZugH2

I wish I could have gotten an Alienware laptop but they're too heavy and guaranteed to make me look like an autist. I have to hide my power level while I'm in school.

i'm actually using the aspire, it's pretty good (at least when i upgraded to 8gb ddr4).

the backlit keyboard is awesome, i wish it becomes a standard feature in laptops.

i just wish windows 7 would work with kabylake.

Windows 7 might not, you could try this method with windows 7 but it might not work.

it DOES work with windows 8 though.

just install windows 8 on an older system, patch it, update it, what ever. then put the drive/clone the drive to the kabylake system

You'll get weird error messages but it will still work. Some drivers may not work but the system over all will.

>Some drivers may not work but the system over all will.

windows 7 did work, but none of the drivers worked. otherwise, i never would've returned to 10.

might try just having windows 8.1 though, but it will probably mess up a bunch of things.

i'll just get an older laptop for my lewd things.

I mean if you're that worried about it, put a sticker over the alienhead on the screen back and turn off all the LEDs using the FX control panel.

Now it just looks like slightly thicker business laptop. The current generation of Alienware Laptops is pretty tame on the nonsense. The alienware logo doesn't even show up if it's turned off in FX.

Also fuck what people think. try having an actual personality if you want to connect with people. People would see your knowlege of technology and as a boon and seek your advice rather than regarding you like a sperg if you just chill the fuck out. it has nothing to do with what you know, and has everything to do with how you present that knowledge.

From where are you getting a new macbook for 400$?

>he cares that microsoft can see his porn

i have 400 gigabytes of dick girl porn in my one drive. Get at me pajeets.

you've got to shed those puritan thoughts and become the heritic you've always been user. Stop hiding who you are, you will feel better for it.

Not new, from "leboncoin", craigslist equivalent

Last time it was it was a scam, but now its okay.

And I found something better than the macbook, vaio pro 13, great screen, a bit bigger and better processor

...

>i have 400 gigabytes of dick girl porn in my one drive.

>only 400GB

I don't amass retard amounts of porn as a hobby, everything I have is in there because I like it, not simply because it pertains to a specific topic, but because it's literally my preference. it's refined to my tastes

Got a kid like that in my CompSci class. First day he was next to me sperging out why he was so smart for getting a maxed out AW Laptop.

>not understanding the premium feature of having a mobile processor in a laptop device
It's the ultimate minimalist device. It's a statement in itself. It's literally art. If you fail to understand this then rMB isn't made for you, and it's okay. You are just not one of us. Don't fight it just accept it. We are cool with your needs for additional bloat.

E6640 vs X240 vs sony vaio 13

Specs are good enough for all three
X240 is a bit small, vaio 13 is perfect (1kg, 1080p IPS for 13.3")
battery is a bit short on E6640, should be the best on X240 but what I get is random. (I talked to the vaio owner, battery should hold 6h so that's aplus)
Vaio doesn't have vga or RJ45 which is not dramatic (will come with the wifi module) and the E6440 comes with a docking station..
They all have the same price, $310
I'm lost.

No fucking way. If you had gig synchronous internet and were able to max it out, it would take nearly 100 days to upload a petabyte.

Whatever makes you happy man
Personally I wouldn't want a laptop that's so thermally underpowered that even a phone could outbench it

Thanks. Are you afraid of your scenario? Would you feel weak then?

You're welcome!

No user I'm just saying I am a utilitarian person
I use a thinkpad and blackberry because they're the most optimal for what I do

>shitty g50 shits the bed
Now I need a new windows laptop to type up reports and fill out Excel workbooks

is it worth it to wait fo rmore 8th gen intel core laptops to emerge? Im planning to get a new one, and none of the current ones have a graphics card in them which i would like. or should i just get a high end 7th gen intel core laptop now?

What laptops have the best screens?

Wow, sounds like heaven for basic bitches

A big, and i mean big deal for me is the screen the vaio wins here hands down and is also the most portable of the 3 you can add an external battery to give you the most portable of the three, if i were you i would go for the vaio, also if not the e6640 the x240 if you think is small then you should not consider it.

usually HP, then Dell, then Thinkpads. But only their business line

what equations do I need to work out the difference in perceived size of screens different distances away

say I have a 15.6 inch screen that is two feet away, how much closer would I need to position a 14 inch screen to have equal perceived size

trying to figure out if I could live with a 14 inch screen before I buy

Well 12.5 and 13" aren't so different anyway.
And now I found a X240 with an i7 so it's even harder to compare now..

Which hp laptops?

i dont see too many stacys carrying their thinkpads and blackberry on shopping sprees. maybe its a regional thing?

elitebook line. i wouldnt get one though, they are shit to work on. modern thinkpads have 1080p screens, and that should be enough for anyone on a sub 15" screen.

How is the quality of the latest Macbook Pros? Pls serious answers.

Same question here. Though don't expect to get serious answers.

Still best in category.
Honestly though I wouldn't buy a laptop until next year if going brand new and you can hold off, both Apple and competitors will be releasing their ARM based lappy's.

So the university I'm attending is giving me a grant for a laptop but I can't really decide what I want to get.

I've been using a T420 that I got off ebay for a $150 bucks a couple years ago and it gets everything done fine enough but I'm not exactly going to pass up a free laptop.
I was considering one of the higher end Macbooks because they have nice trackpads/build quality and you can get a good screen on it plus it's not my money so it being overpriced isn't really a con.
Other one I was thinking about what that anniversary edition T470 thinkpad with the old keyboard which I do really like and I mostly use the trackpoint over the touchpad on my T420 currently anyway.

I'm not really sure of what's out there currently though but I'm not really looking for anything that's bulky for "muh gayems" but something between a standard sized laptop or an ultrabook.

Surface Laptop, Macbook Pro, XPS 4K, Razer Blade, and HP spectre are pretty much the best money can buy right now. Look into them and see which suit your needs/wants better.

Thanks I'll give those a look over.

M6800 is better
Search up complains about it

looks hawt

Ordered the 4th gen for $500. I wish it had a num pad but I think I'll be fine

>Surface Laptop
>Macbook Pro
>Razer Blade
>HP Spectre

Let's stop recommending the reddit laptops, ok?

Is this a good deal?
orangecounty.craigslist.org/sys/d/lenovo-thinkpad-t460/6288545727.html

Numpads are fucking useless. Every single key on a numpad is a duplicate, and you have to move your right hand way off the home row to use it so typing words at the same time as numbers is a bitch.

I am looking to spend around 700 on a laptop

Wait, people actually think Apple is going to release ARM computers? Are you mentally disabled?

You are aware current macbooks already host an ARM chip, which is exceptionally low powdered and predominantly for the touch bar. Implementing something stronger isn't out of the picture, largely to offload more making them more power efficient.
So the question is, are you? :)

Num pads are better because you don't have to take your eyes off the screen. You have to do that if you don't have a num pad.

Will a macbook air work for a CS major?

>buying anything other than a ThinkPad or a MacBook as a laptop

Why do people still do this shit?

Memepads have horrible screens especially the ones recommended on tpg. The x1s are the best but expensive.

Memebook is over priced.

I need a latop with at least a gtx 1070 max-q and above 60hz refresh rate display, price is not important. I have been looking at the ge63vr from msi, thoughts?
