Why use any other than debian? Ubuntu is like Android for PCs
Why use any other than debian? Ubuntu is like Android for PCs
Plus, Debian has a nice logo.
Trying out arch, but I probably will go back to Debian soon.
i stopped using it a month after Ian an hero'd. too bitchy about non-free software.
all of my linux systems are headless, so i use debian and raspbian. i've used mist, ubuntu, kali, and redhat with DEs in the past. i hated RH, mist and ubuntu were fine but i don't think they add anything over debian for a headless environment. kali was great but i don't do pentesting anymore.
i have no complaints with debian, so i don't see a point in trying anything new.
if I have to install 3 repositories to get fonts that look like they're from 2006 rather than 1997, it's bad.
Are you sure you aren't thinking of OpenSUSE?
ubuntu just werks
it's only better for the linux illiterate though
Why would you even use debian if you have to compile the whole system from source to have up to date versions of software? Might as well still be this
>doesn't mention sid - testing repos
>testing
I said up to date.
>Ian an hero
Please, put the cool aid down. He was assassinated.
The best distribution is Debian Unstable with non-free software and the proprietary drivers.
But the hassle to set all the up is silly when you can just install Ubuntu with your preferred environment.
I don't understand why Debian don't just have a live iso of exactly that.
General users aren't going to go in sources and change stuff, so you're left with a server distro.
TL;DR: Debian should just be Ubuntu.
>>Ian an hero
>Please, put the cool aid down. He was assassinated.
well he was assinated by a vacuum cleaner then...
How about Linux Mint Debian Edition?
It's a server distro.
Because of the LTS kernel perfomance is not so great and so is battery life. So, not a great choice for a notebook.
Ancient libs and packages. I'm not saying that bleeding edge is always a way to go but in mist cases - it is. Also, if you are dev - you need to have the latest and greatest.
Still, Debian is better then some trash like Fedora where they break half of GNOME functionality with their tweaks. Also, right know it's better than oS Leap because these guys put a really ancient kernel in 42.3.
But it's not even really a hassle.
>change stable to testing in sources
>sudo apt update && upgrade
>change testing to unstable and add non-free to sources
>sudo apt update && upgrade
Anyone uncomfortable with doing that should be using Ubuntu anyway.
meant for
Why do Arch kiddies want to make a rolling bleeding edge dumpster fire of every system?
Debian stable is perfectly fine when it's doing what it's supose to do, there is no need in using it otherwise. Debian unstable only good if you want to contribute to a Debian project. Wanna a rolling release? Go Arch or openPEPE Tumbleweed
>testing five year old packages
>experimenting with '''unstable''' packages outdated at least by two years
>Assassinated
Nigga he got stupid drunk on some pussy wine and then got naked and killed himself because he got dumped.
Because Ubuntu is superior.
systemd
だから、devuan
>implying bleeding edge is better than tested to hell and back
>implying you can even install Slackware on anything other than IA-32 and x86_64
Is Debian a declarative OS? No?
Get that weak shit out of my face.
bleeding edge isn't necessarily better but it is sometimes necessary. Debian straight up explodes with 3rd party software. I wasn't recommending slackware, just saying debian isn't better outside of straight up server shit and even then its generally worse than a redhat derivative. RPM>deb and availability of support stuff is also nice. Debian stopped being a useful option when centos came around and now with systemd it's basically just hanging on to whatever to survive.
>2017
>still not using gentoo
>dat install tho
Ubuntu is better
Because I'm not a lesbian
Because that's not how you spell gobolinux
>not being a lesbian (male)
So now we just call it Deb?
So just shit on Ubuntu for no reason?
Cool.
I don't care what you use, but why talk shit about any distro you don't use anyway?
I like Debian, used it from 1.3. But it had a lot of problems before Ubuntu came along. I recently swtiched back to Ubuntu from FreeBSD which was fun for a while but it reminded me of what Debian was like before Ubuntu came along, but without the stable package cycle.
Ubuntu LTS is good.
Sadly that's dead
Fedora is better, and now that everyone follows Red Hat it's the upstream for everyone else.
Redhat is the cancer killing linux. Fuck that shitshow.
Why not use Qubes OS. You can start Debian qubes there...
but it's already infected everything, no sense pretending debian isn't just a worse version of redhat too.
>install latest Fedora
>half of Gnome features don't work
>rolling kernel updates cause a gdm loop
>back up to a previous kernel
>wi-fi stops working
Fuck it. Even brokensuse is easier to live with.
i never had any problems with opensuse, even the tumbleweed was fine.
>this is what cucks actually believe
Even he knows that putting syndromeD on your computer is retarded.
using Tumbleweed right know, it's okay, a lot better than the latest Leap which is complete dumpster fire. You still have to fuck around with settings to get decent boot times and fonts but other than that - everything is alright. Leap on the other hand has an ancient kernel which gives you a very poor performance and a battery life. You can make it work by changing a kernel version, changing network settings, etc.,but why would you want to do all that when there are so many decent distros out there?
Because I don't have a server? On my desktop I use booboontoo, on my laptop - void.
It works, why should I distro hop? Convince me to switch from ubantoo to debian.
P.s. aboogoontoo has best name. Which can't be said about debian.
yeah, opensuse comes with some shit configs out of the box. there's really nice gui configurators though. I think Leap 42.2? at least is on a pretty modern kernel. Not sure what 42.1 is but thats their idea of long term release now or something. Not even sure anymore.
Because Apt is the single worst package manager I've ever had the displeasure to use (though I've heard dnf is even worse.).
Declarative ?
Debian unstable
use Devuan
don’t like systemd, how Debian so undemocratically handled systemd issue, and increasing # of SJW in Debian
the tech is more important
Use the minimal iso.
I recently installed Devuan and it works great. Systemd BTFO.
this is kind of over saturated
debian is probably what I'll use if I'll fail with Arch in the next 2 days
you know what? literally the only reason i stay away from *bian is because apt sucks balls. the most essential command, apt-get install, makes no fucking sense as a command. it should be apt-install or something. it triggers my autism
even arch's pacman with its flag-commands grinds my gears less
if someone made debian and replaced apt with a better package manager, i'd go for it, but lately it seems like package managers are the only difference between distros anyway
running dabian on my servers arch on laptop because i feel like it
You could do apt install memeware, or install Gentoo and do emerge memeware
i kind of like the idea of stable base + fresh productivity software and drivers, so i use ubuntu.
I would like something like debian stable + snaps or PPAs more though, just because PPAs are easier to rollback/manage than backports. Debian stable is fine though, i just have specific quirks that force me off it. I dont like rolling releases so i dont use sid, testing seems to be the shitty middle ground that has worst of both worlds.
>want to install kernel headers for DKMS
>install kernel headers
>try to build module
>it doesn't
>after 15min looking why it didn't work, realize dnf installed a newer version instead of matching the kernel's version.
>update kernel
>finally it works
Yep, DNF is worse. At least APT tries to install matching versions I'd possible.
I use it, but without NSA/systemd.
I had some unnecessary DKMS builds and fails as well with apt. No idea why it didn't figure out the right order. In most cases I think apt is pretty handy, though.
NSA would be SELinux
bretty gud running picrelated headless VM - 59% out of 64MB allocated
Shit hardware support.
So systemd's the CIA?
Debian unstable
I compile my own kernel as a habit from my Gentoo days
Why does everyone hate systemd?
>heavy compared to other init systems
>feature creep means it is taking over the whole OS
>horrible security record
>autistic author who spends more time on Sup Forums defending his shitware than fixing bugs
>impossible to audit
>project has ill defined goals so it will never be finished
>google botnet built right in
>binary logs
>many other more stable init systems out there
It's objectively complete shit and is completely unsuited for embedded devices and weak machines. I have a CHIP and the idiots use systemd on its OS, systemd literally uses 10% of the CPU at all times.
>Binary logs
Absolutely disgusting. What fucking brain damage does Pottering have?
apt-get is already being replaced with just apt. Every command that has apt-get can now be run with just the first part, apt. I think it also brought a progress bar.
His parents were communist East Germans, it's probably generational.
apt-get will still be used in scripting. Check the man pages. apt is for interactive usage. I like the progress bar though.
