Is it worth the $579 upgrade?

From a 970 ssc acx 2.0 blah blah card to a 1080 ftw edition. Hows the boost with a 6600k oc'd to 4.6 ghz?

if you're on 1080p then there's no point desu

yep 1080p peasant here.

if the games that you play already have great and stable fps then there is no reason to upgrade GPU/CPU combo yet, unless you play an MMO that requires a lot of CPU power then you should consider upgrading the CPU first.

your CPU also seems fine for most games on the market atm, maybe save your money for Volta GPU that is coming out next year and next gen Intel processors that will be coming out soon

Save for better monitor first.

What would you recommend?

I'm still rocking a GTX 970, I'm even doubting upgrading to Volta since everything runs at Ultra 60FPS at 1080p and this GPU turns 3 years old in a few days, I reckon I will get 2 more years out of this GPU before I have to lower settings downs.

I will probably only upgrade once 4K becomes cheaply available.

As someone who got spoiled with 144Hz I really recommend 4K 60Hz over 1440p 144Hz. 4K is gonna become the new standard and your monitor will stay relevant much longer.

While 144Hz is amazing, once you get used to it you just cant go back. To a point where you even hate using other computers because you got so spoiled.

As for which model I would get, depends if you wanna go with goysinc or not. Acer Predator X34 if yes or Acer S277HK if not.

get a 1440p@120+hz monitor

4k is a meme, there are next to no 4k movies that you could watch. you cant tell the difference between 1440p and 4k anyway, atleast in games. 120+hz is also less strain on your eyes.

Ahhhhh these conflicting opinions. Well I don't normally play twitchy fps's which require the most frames possible anyway so I might go 4k 60hz.

Maxwell users should wait for Volta next year

Wait for Volta and get both a volta gpu and 4k monitor when it comes out sounds good? 970 can't do 4k anyway righ?

Yeah, 970 cant do anything in 4K. Volta 2080 will probably be very good card for 4K gaming.

wait for volta

Clearly 144Hz is the superior upgrade and not 4k

It's like having two 970's in SLI, where it works. Almost exactly the same performance, nearly same fps.

t. Former 970 SLI owner and actual 1080 owner. Did it to get rid of the 3.5gb meme.

>monitor will stay relevant much longer
>monitor
>stay relevant

You mentioned gaming shit mostly, so I assume you're talking games. 60hz panel will never be more relevant than a 144hz one, 4K is a meme and with 1440p your GPU will stay relevant for much longer thanks to whatever flavor of -sync you get.

So maybe I should run a sli config at get me a another 970 to go with my current one. Could save me some cash. Heard sli doesn't work properly with most games though.

Will Volta help at all with prices? You used to be able to get 1070 performance for $350. It was just a few months ago. I feel so stupid passing on the Zotac sff 1070 for $320 around New years.

i actually had an excel file before my reformat of about 10 games benched with a calculated average of performance increase

anyway it's around an 80% improvement in performance

A third of your games won't work, and remember the 3.5 the limit, not so newer games are using 6gb and more. A 970in SLI is not so good because of that, but hey, you can find them for 150€, or 160-170$

>GTX 1080 for 1080p gaming

It's a great solution to 144hz gayman.

How about 1440p? Should I still stick with my 970? I'll ignore you insult.

4K 60hz for casuals
1440p 100hz+ for the more serious

saw this on amazon. Not sure about it. Got any specific models or brands to trust?

Yeah that's fine. It has free-sync too which is nice if you have an AMD GPU. My only gripe is that it's TN panel. IPS will cost more.

Asus or Acer ones are really good, you can save some money as Asus sells one without the g-sync module if you so desire.

Personally I couldn't live without g-sync, I can't stand screen tearing.

unless you wan't to play the latest AAA nonsense absolutely maxed out a 970 is fine. I doubt there is a game a 970 can't play on high settings on WQHD

I upgraded from a R9 390 to Vega and still wondering why I bothered. The games I play max out on either card @ WQHD.

I used my 970sli with 1440p and 165hz monitor with good results, many modern games ran between 100-130fps, others around 80 wich is pretty good. Most demanding ones were around 60 wich is perfect.
I have that exact monitor but in 24" Avoid it like the plague or test it first, almost all of them suffer from backlight bleeding, and ghosting light in the center of the screen, do a research.

saw this one just now. I might pick up a 1070 ftw edition to let me play witcher 3 and siege with higher graphics and keep up with the higher res.

desu the 1080 is a good card for 4k gaming
t. has 2 4k monitors and a 1080

Assuming that's a TN panel, couldn't find it on the site... Not a bad deal though, 24" is a bit small for 1440p in my opinion.

Get the 1070 ftw2 as the ftw cards had VRM issues or whatever. Witcher 3 is still pretty demanding. High preset gives me about 75-90 fps at 1440p on a 1070. Other games high preset will get you 80-120 fps no problems.

WAIT FOR THE 2000/1100 SERIES

> wait
I bought a 1080 Ti a week ago at $680, did I fuck up? ;_;

Volta's not coming out until next year, 1080Ti is still the king of gaming for another 4-6 months.
