My Uni offers a laptop through Dell with the following specs:
>Intel Core i5-7300hq
>8GB, DDR4-2400MHz SDRAM
>1TB 2.5" 7mm SATA (5400 RPM)
>Nvidia Quadro M620 w/2GB GDDR5
>15.6" HD TN (1366x768) Non-Touch LED-backlit (45% color gamut)
All for $1030. Is this a rip-off? I really need a laptop asap but something tells me it's alot.

Definitely a ripoff. Should be at least $200 cheaper.
of course it's a rip off, you could buy a freaking surface pro for that money which is better in every single way.
why are you even asking, you cant google components and figure this shit out in 5 seconds yourself?
Is it a latitude?
inspiron?
xps?
I have googled but I also can't find a laptop with a quadro for that price.
Precision
Just checked surface pro and it's price is way higher! Plus it doesn't even have a dedicated graphics card.
thank god you told us where you live and what you need it for, that way we were able to help you so well
Need it for MATLAB and Solidworks. Based in the land of Trump
Good spec but hdd and 1366x768 current year make me lol.
that is a super ripoff, yes.
Is it a Precision series? If so it's a good deal considering the specs. Not great, but pretty good.
Yes it is a precision 3520
Those spec's sound like Dell is trying to clean out their old inventory. I've seen better stuff at Costco for much less.
Horrible, if you've ever had 1080p on a 15 inch screen you'll want to kill yourself dealing with 1366x768.
Arguably id say that 1080p is the best all around choice in that size, ESPECIALLY if doing real work involving matlab.
Dell outlet would be a MUCH better choice, especially when they run the weekly coupons.
>precision
AVOID
Brah, what wrong with a mobile, shit tier, GPU scaling a display by almost 15% !?
let the faggots make their own mistakes!
>surface Pro
>better in every way
>no dedicated GPU
>have to buy separate keyboard
>literally impossible to repair
user please.
y'all got any suggestions? trying to spend under a grand. just need it to use at school and last 3 yrs
>Dedicated GPU
>Laptop
Enjoy your 18 minutes of battery life
>15.6" HD TN (1366x768)
I would throw it straight into the trash.
Honestly, this is about as low end as it gets.
I would almost guarantee that panel is used in whatever litany of shit tier laptops they sell in walmart as "budget".
If you're gaming, it's gonna be plugged in.
>2017
>15.6"
>1366x768
trash.exe
>Is this a rip-off?
Yes. Just get a Sager or something if you want good price:performance.
Literally $200 walmart laptop tier.
Universities usually have some abomination type config like that. I have no idea who makes the decisions but every uni "deal" ive seen has been SHIT.
You are way better off buying on Dell Outlet or even dell.com can be better.
you can get sub 1k thinkpad e570 with
i7
1080 screen
ssd
dedicated gfx
probably something similar with dell aswell
Went to dells website. Hows this?
>7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7300HQ Quad Core
>8GB, 2400MHz, DDR4
>1TB 5400 rpm SATA Hard Drive
>NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5
>15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display
Dell Inspiron 5000 for $799
Ripoff
You can buy nice w530 for half of price.
>inspiron
Avoid that as much possible.
Just get a fucking macbook
This or thinkpad X250/260 with nice 1080 IPS screen and good battery life.
I always laugh at normies having these inspiron or asus shit laptops.
Why do people pay ~$1000 for a laptop? I just got a HP with 15,6 display, 256gb SSD and a decent quad core for $400. Everything runs smoothly and flawlessly. Once my desktop dies I won't even need a new one, I'll just use the laptop.
swap out the snail drive for a ssd and your golden
They pay if is premium one like Thinkpad or macbook and they do job with that laptop.
There are some clueless people who pays 1000$ for walmart tier laptops like asus inspiron dell toshiba or childrens for gaymes.
i still need a dedicated gpu for solidworks though
the goddamn quadro is pricey as bitch.
Why do you need the laptop, are you gonna do 3d cad? Rendering or something?
The thing is those card are essentially the same as the gaming ones, but have "approved" drivers and work more stable and fast with some professional software. That's it.
What about an MSI for $699
>Geforce GTX 1050 2G GDDR5
>Intel Core i5-7300HQ (2.5-3.1GHz)
>15.6" Full HD eDP Vivid Color 94% NTSC 1920x1080
>8GB DDR4 2400MHz
>256GB SSD M.2 SATA
Downside is that it comes with windows 10 home instead of pro and battery life is 3-4hrs
Yeah I will only really use it for MATLAB and Solidworks at Uni. I have a desktop at home. Trying to find something that's not priced ridiculously is really hard.
I don't know what are you needs but if you need gpu badly I would go for this.
I do java, linux and web dev and I find thinkpad X-series or T-series enough.
If I can get by with a "gaming" card i'm cool with that. I mean I doubt i'll really get to do anything super crazy. If i do have to, i'm sure that i can just work off a desktop.
i wish i could get by with an old thinkpad but this time i won't be able. Solidworks is a bitch.
>If I can get by with a "gaming" card i'm cool with that.
Your money will go way further.
youtube.com
At the level of university Matlab doesn't require much computing power.
Solidworks is fucking disgusting piece of software - it uses only one core for it's computations, so what you want is the real high CPU frequency, the higher the better. RAM - no less than 8gb, better 16gb. If you are not working professionally there is absolutely no need for quadro - it basically let's you to get higher framerates when you move/rotate objects on screen and I think it renders faster. Anyway, the overall performance mostly depends on CPU it is espescially true on bigger assemblies, even quadros crap out on huge assemblies. I've worked succesfully with GT 540M, actually it worked suprisingly good, assemblies of ~1000 worked flawlessly.
Nice to have input from someone with experience in the issue. By the way will solidworks run on windows 10 home?
Also what would you say about
Not him but 2GB VRAM is shit for games, no idea about actual 3D software.
I don't game at all so that's no issue for me
I've worked with 2,0ghz, 540m and 8gb of ram - had no problems on medium sized assemblies. The pc you ask about looks more than plenty enough + you'll be able to play new games on it. Windows home - I don't see why it shouldn't work.
For sure! At that price and specs it shouldn't be a rip off?
>2018 - 3 mo.
>15.6" 1366x768
I hope you're not actually considering that deal, OP.
>15.6" HD TN (1366x768) Non-Touch LED-backlit (45% color gamut)
That's a hard nope.
I have a laptop with similar display because it was all I could afford a couple years ago and it's so bad it's even barely usable for watching porn in bed, which is all I'm using it for these days.
>Dell
>$1030
Kill yourself for even considering that shit. Any Sup Forumsentooman would know to avoid that shit like the plague. Oh wait, you're a collegefag, which means you're more than likely a newfag normalfag dumbass
