too expansive

A used dell optiplex would make a better server than this.

nah cuz it's apple

???
define "good". if you want something to ssh into and i guess run some command line utilities then i guess sure?

Fuck no. Dual-core CPU for a server? Hahahaha

Buy an old six core xeon server for 100 bucks instead.

It was good enough for M00t

Bought a LetBox LA server for $5.70/mo. Dual core 3.20Ghz with 4GB of RAM.

Ask kaylx

kys moron

I miss him

Axe Moot

>moot leaves us
>hiro comes in
>hiro makes the place better for a few months
>fucks it up as bad as moot
Who will replace him?
Terry D.?

RMS

kys moron

Not in 2017

NO. Even refurbished it's overpriced, most server software target linux and windows not mac os.

I'm gonna say no because of the 4gb of memory. And I don't think that's an upgradeable unit.

That said I have a 2012 mini w/ 16gb ram that is my plex server and ssh box. Thing runs great but the hard drive is getting slow.

If you really just want something to get started then it'll be "ok". But just ok, and the lack of memory will hurt you a lot. Don't expect to run minecraft on this thing.

If I'm honest i can think of a zillion better options for server hardware than that.

Yes. And OSX Server is available for around $20 on iTunes Store. Fully supported, standards-compliant UNIX server.
Stick a SSD in as a boot drive and away you go.

good enough to host an imageboard

t. assblasted pajeet

Why doesn't apple build all their macs in this format? who actually prefers having their display built into their pc?

Mark Zuckerberg

If it was an i7 model, yes. I use one as a ESX server.

Pros:
> small

Downside:
>max of 16GB RAM
>non expandable
>you'll need a thunderbolt > ethernet connector if you want more than one LAN

nagasaki

>who actually prefers having their display built into their pc?

retards do

honestly if Apple just made a line of Mac Minis and ATX-compliant Mac Pros all would be right with the world

Anyone who buys Applel shit is a fucking retard. Later, fag.

No it's too expensive if you just need to host a very small website or file server or something very small then it would be fine but you could get some used laptop or something for 400$ that would be a lot better server.

who

Newfags don't remember how comically slow and unreliable Sup Forums used to be. It spent years working half the time at best.

>Who will replace him?

Old version Mac OS will make a hell in couple years.

People who want to buy a new $5000 computer every 4 years when the GPU burns out and you can't fix it yourself

You'd have to be a moron to buy a high-end Mac these days.

In 2 years they will have tons of problems and Apple will just ignore it until a lawsuit as usual.

Reminder that the 1st mac mini was literally a headless eMac

The first Mac Mini would have been the LC actually.

I use a HP laptop from 2009 with a Core2 Duo
Works great as a file/media server, real time encoding/decoding of 1080p, etc.
Only taking 30W while doing so.

Neo-Sup Forums does not know about Macintoshes, only Macs.

Why waste power and space for something you don't need?

>i5

no. go with i7 and you'll be happier

The Hungarian man of Sorrow

Reminder that eMac was a beast for OC.
>buy 700mhz
>resolder multiplier resistors
>1.27ghz eMac

So what is the recommended home server recipe for 2017? I just want somewhere to store all my games, music and hentai/jav. Maybe run a windows server so I could stream the games to a tablet

i have that exact one and its -ok-, it gets the job done and thats pretty much it. ive had no problems streaming anything in 1080p and 3440x1440 at all and it handles everything just fine. i wouldnt pay that much for it though because you cant upgrade it.

os x server is shit, and they keep taking away features without adding any. i looked into it like literally a week ago

You can get a better Intel NUC for the same price, so no.

get a nas on amazon for $100 and dump the idea of streaming games to a tablet because if youre going to do that you might as well just build a whole new pc

If you have a rack or don't care about the noise, used rackmounted servers are great. Dell R710 is quite popular for homeservers and doesn't cost much.

Worked for Sup Forums.

What about the power bill at the end of the month?

Not that much, unless you go for the most power hungry CPUs.

> good server?
Maybe. Not really, although it may handle a few LXC containers.

lol this
moot is a faggot

It's safe to assume anyone on Sup Forums asking about "a server" is just talking about hosting their hentai on their cable modem just in case they need to jack off in the bathroom at school and need to get around the net nanny software.

If you're in a situation where the actual decision matters, you'd be using a hosting service instead of buying a computer to throw on a LAN with MUH GANTOO

hi sheng

i need server to search my porn collection for duplicates. oh, and because all my neighbors pay me for providing internet to them.
my whole block connected through 1 comcast account, and all 12 houses have premium service for the cost of one.

Damn. Now i want to do that to my 800 ati once i put it together again.

No. servermonkey.com/servers.html

lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eMac/eMac-upgrade.html
Exact guide I used years ago.

>once i put it together again.
You broke the power cable, didn't you...
It's ok - I did too, the cable sits outside the case now and I short the wires to start it ;)

Maybe I just want to host my own mail and backup servers in my own house to keep them secure and private. Ever think about that, faggot? Ever stopped to consider that maybe I just hate cloud shit? Fuck yourself.

Also OpenBSD and Debian are the superior server operating systems.

notch no joke

Nope, the down converter died so i sourced a new one but i lost all the screws except the special case ones.

I'm tempted to buy a eMac to play with it.
How much should I spend lads?

A used WD MyCloud EX4 and populate it with big drives should do the trick fine.

under $100 (i got 4 for $40 once) and never ever try and look for a CRT machine on eBay unless you are rich.

Nah, I want to buy locally.

>the cloud is a jew scam
Attention youngsters on Sup Forums: this is what happens when you fail to keep up with progress

Keep that skill set sharp or you'll be an angry unemployable "former tech guy" later in life

I sold a couple for 20€ each half a year ago.
I think there's one for sale locally (for me) for 5€ right now.

PPC Macshit is cheap. 68k Macintosh and Intel Macshit is the one that costs.

Well have some official service manuals. tim.id.au/laptops/apple/

>he fell for the cloud jew

>old xeon instead

this

Wouldn't hosting a website on personal server need a really high speed internet connection? Also most ISPs don't allow to do that afaik.

Meant for

>macshit
>good

Pick one.

A ruined laptop can make a nice little server.

just.

>Who will replace him?
Mallory

The executive who brought it to us said it was "ran over". We had to just node and get her a new machine when it's obvious she broke it in two.

why don't you take the board out for maximum airflow?

One, dust can short shit out. Two, it has large rubber feet under giving it a half inch of air space. It never gets warm with the fan often not even running. It also has a built in and removable battery on it so built in battery backup. Lastly I am far too lazy to take this out of what already works and then ghetto mount it on some case or something.

>she did
It was probably her kids user.
Doesn't change the fact that a company laptop was trashed under an employees watch, but it probably wasn't her that did the deed.

I would bet my own money it was. She's the type to fly off the handle about little things and get overly emotional about stupid shit. She's the kind to hit the computer when she is frustrated.

No it wasn't, Sup Forums was always going down

If there are any other macs on on your network and you want convenient seamless integration, I would recommend using a Mac Mini as a server, especially if you can get a second hand one cheaply.

Kim Dotcom (plz!)

Way too expensive but i got a mac mini with ESXi on it.

8GB RAM 500GB SSD i5 dual Core

3 active VMs

Windows Server 2016
pi-hole
Nextcloud

>keep in mind, ESXi 6.5 is not supported though. Just install 6.0 U3a

You can get older models for 20$ and slap Debian on it.
