OK - so the Pomodoro technique is a darling in the 'get shit done' community. I've been familiar with it for awhile and use it on and off (like right now on a 5 minute break.) Problem is the best software for it on PC (tomighty) is written in JRE, and I just had to soil my new laptop with JRE 7 or whatever to install it.
It also has no high-DPI support.
Can one of you kids make timer software like this that works well at high DPI, is just as simple (low functionality, honestly) and doesn't need fucking JRE?
I'll pay. That's the kind of community that this software attracts.
Search on Mac community. I prefer time boxes, like pomodoro but different size time ranges.
Levi Sullivan
the people that crow about getting shit done don't really get shit done
Xavier Martinez
I wouldn't say this community 'crows,' and I'm not trying to espouse some kind of superiority. The guy who turned me onto pom has run the Marathon Des Sables with a wife and three kids... I'd call that pretty good time management.
Overly practical, I do want some kind of hip novelty. It is worth noting Tomighty ticks angrily at you as if it were an actual bent metal timer (the stress this can produce is surprisingly useful). Five minutes under the pom timer is like an hour of normal dicking around sometimes.
Thomas Peterson
Stop going to reddit for motivation.
Sebastian Allen
Is this bait? Just use the fucking timer on your phone.
Luke Allen
>on your phone. Is this also bait?
Ayden Sanchez
Really funny you mention that, I've had reddit redirecting to localhost since 2012... waste of time circlejerking neckbeards.
>Increased Anxiety due to not finishing task within the designated 30 minutes. Enjoy being on anti-depressants for the rest of your life OP, either that or you shoot-up the office because the tomato told you so!
Jack Watson
pomodoro doesnt work... what you want is 2-3 h flow sate, not an app that breaks your flow every 30 minutes
Jayden Gray
If you have ADHD, there are treatments. Otherwise, just focus on your work. It's not hard. In fact, it'll be easier than if you had a timer bothering you and breaking your concentration every half hour or whatever.
Luke Williams
I'm probably the calmest person you'll ever meet. I specifically didn't say anxiety, but stress. Stress isn't bad, and if you think it is then you're a weak beta cuck.
Depends on what you do. For some tasks, longer flow states are basically impossible for me (see Yerkes-Dodson). For others, they make perfect sense. The right tool for the job.
Neat, but I'm talking about native software that doesn't need me to be online - not a website.
pic related, I'm 25 and not retarded
Jordan Jackson
what os are you on again. I found this one to be the best (it lacks stats and tracking I think, but on the other hand it can block distracting apps/websites)
So to reiterate, I I'll check this out but I need the most minimal feature set. Tracking, web blocking, etc are features beyond MVP for me. I have fine self control, I just want the structure and enjoy light weight software.
William Sanchez
Still valid? What OS?
Lincoln Kelly
Oh hey sorry. I primarily run Windows these days but may very soon go into a Mac shop indefinitely.
Jayden Brown
Pass then
Bentley Allen
What answer were you looking for? I guess the fact tomighty uses JRE means compile once run anywhere but how complicated is this to do as a native app? For the record I don't program so I can't give real time estimates or fathom what's realistic. Two weeks?
Evan Watson
Linux. That's simple. I don't have much experience with cross-platform apps. Time is really implementation/experience dependent
Jose Perez
If all the required features are a box with alarms that could be interrupted and paused, it could be made in a day in python
Adam Robinson
>pomodoro >software Stop, just stop. You are doing it wrong. Paper and pencil is what makes pomodoro work. The most advanced technology you are allowed to use for pomodoro is your phone for time keeping and ringing but a simple mechanical pomodoro would be better.
Easton Morales
>Projecting >He was literally right and you where a reddit retard I don't even think you know what projection means.
Carter Phillips
So you want to give me money to make a cross-plattform application that locks certain features of your pc for a specified time, essentially outsourcing your discipline and thus taking away an opportunity to develop an important life-skill? Sing me up.
Hudson Perry
Serious question: what do you call it when someone says, "I can't do X until I have Y."
"I can't learn to play guitar until I have a Fender Stratocaster."
"I can't learn to program until I have an IBM Thinkpad."
"I can't finish my thesis until I beat my high score on that game."
It's procrastination, sure, but is there a more precise term?
Michael Harris
scroll front page of hacker news open any interesting articles read them all 10 minutes passed nothing to do work for 3 hours repeat
There's a term called Yak Shaving that's a bit more close to individual tasks.
So you start to work on a program. But then you find out your text editor has an update. So you go to do the update, and you find out that Canonical has once again moved repos around without aliases, so you try to learn where the new repos are, but they're now HTTPS, and you can't install apt-transport-https because your repos are fucked up, so then you go to find the right .deb package for your version of ubuntu, you go to install it, but you can't because it's for 17.04 and you're on 16.04 and you can't dist-upgrade because your repos are still fucked up..
and this sequence of shit repeats itself until you're at the car wash downtown, shaving a yak with a disposable razor. All because you wanted to program.
Michael Lewis
>porn p-o-m Stop reading Sup Forums on your phone, user.
Dylan Roberts
>phonefags Unironically doing it wrong. Get a fucking wristwatch.
Zachary Davis
Literally get a tomato-shaped kitchen timer
Alexander Flores
No, see, it has to be some perfect app that doesn't exist so he's got an excuse for not concentrating.
Lucas Baker
I think you jumped a few conclusions there. I don't want you to touch any of my functionality: tomighty only counts down from 25, 15, and 5. And it ticks as it counts down. That's all it does.
I don't need help with discipline, I just would like a nicer piece of software.
Thought about this earlier today. Might unironically do this because the rest of Sup Forums is so smart they can't understand all I want is what was literally described in the first post. No more, no less. Its like, three features.
Joseph Rogers
I've actually been on something all morning... what do you guys discuss here again?
Gavin Wright
>I've actually been on something all morning Adderall?
Xavier Harris
I save that for weekdays, when I'm getting paid.
;)
Jack King
Excuse me, yes, I had jumped to the conclusion that you would like an application that actually provides a service, not just a countdown-timer that makes some noise. If you'd like a nice, 'modern' GUI, it'll take some time, if not, really aint that hard. That is, if you want it built from scratch. I'll do it for any beer of your choice delivered to me by you in person. Also my initial post was not meant as an offer, but rather as a joking reminder that this is Sup Forums, there are websites out there built specifically for requests like yours. Tho I am serious about the beer.
Zachary Ross
This is where it gets odd - I don't install things on my computer I don't need, and I like when I don't have a litany of features I don't want/need. This is why my request is causing everyone so much confusion - I know its simple. I don't actually want Sup Forums to develop anything for me, but it's bent everyone's minds - I don't want a 'modern' GUI, the one it has now is fine - I just want it to scale to high DPI (right now it's antsized). I don't need it messing with my network stack, I just want it to count down time and make dynamic noise.
Everyone else has suggestions of things that are close but off - which is funny for a board where it's normal to obsess over FOSS and Thinkpads; you'd think a single simple single purpose app would be understood conceptually but it's apparently heretical...
Jose Adams
Basic stuff (getting the backend/command-line stuff working) would take an hour or so, GUI would probably take 1-2 hours. An extra hour or two would probably be in there for searching for sound effects and figuring out the appJar gui stuff. I'll charge you $30-$50 in total if you really want this.
What do you mean by "dynamic noise"? I'll throw in a clock tick or timer ticking sound for each second that passes during the countdown. What other requirements you got?
Austin Cooper
Shit, forgot my trip
Christopher White

Noone here is able to program anything other than "hello world" apps that don't even compile.
Julian Flores

>-e fucking gnu bloat kill yourself considered harmful
Grayson Long
>Noone here is able to program anything other than "hello world" apps that don't even compile. Speak for yourself, twerp. Nobody wants to waste their time writing a one-off for some guy that just wants an excuse not to concentrate. There dozens (hundreds?) of apps that do what he wants, just not to his sperging specifications. KAlarm, on LINUX, for example.
