debian for server, ubuntu for desktop
GAHHHH NOOOO /SLASH/ LENOX!!!!
I thought ubuntu have built in spyware?
Or is that a myth?
>being this insecure
Debian is superior, as is Communism. Ubuntu is Inferior, as is Capitalism.
>some people actually believe that
kek
since 16.04 its disabled by default
stupid Sup Forums meme
I use Debian on my desktop machine and Ubuntu on my VPS.
So does Debian if you don't specify root password during install.
Debian is like the base model of a new car
Ubuntu is like the fully loaded version of the same car
I was going to try debian but I hate satania. Thanks.
Ubuntu just werks
Shouldn't it be vice versa?
For servers debian.
For desktops... throw away ubuntu and install mint (more stable, more just work, more ootb, no amazon spyware)
edgy
>Tells everybody to install it.
>Install icon clearly visible in his screenshot.
I just posted screenahot from internet cus im a phoneposter failure
This is actually a good analogy. That said, Debian I'd say is better suited for machines that don't need constant attention. (eg: HTPC running Debian Stable).
Ubuntu and Debian support also work hand in hand as what works for Ubuntu generally works for Debian (apart from PPAs)
>inb4 muh freedumbs
Well you are better off with Debian or one of Ubuntu's flavours such as Xubuntu or Ubuntu MATE.
mint is not more stable than debian.
Mint is built on ubuntu, which is debian testing
stupid buyman fucking dude fucking you fuck capitalist communist will be the winner
It's sad too, because there's nothing less edgy than being enthusiastic about economic philosophy.
Debian is ideal for servers and for more experienced users it can be good on the desktop. It gives you more control over your system and it's more stable and secure. Ubuntu isn't great for server use or embedded stuff and it's mediocre for desktop use. The only advantage it has in desktop use is that it holds your hand every step of the way.
Now here's why I hate Ubuntu:
I now personally use Fedora on my desktop machines and OpenBSD on my servers. I have Debian on a couple of laptops but I don't use those often. I like Fedora because it's bleeding edge and DNF is my favorite package manager. I've found that Fedora is just as stable as Debian with normal use. I've never had Debian, OpenBSD, or Fedora break with normal use but when I ran Ubuntu for a few weeks I got a strange vague error message that popped up in my status bar in Unity. I tried updating the system, downgrading/removing some packages, and even tried Googling the error message and the code. I eventually found a forum page that was closed with the only explanation being "I figured it out myself". I eventually wiped Ubuntu off my disk because it just pissed me off. So if you use Ubuntu then you should expect to have similar problems to those found in Windows. Something breaks and you end up having to just reinstall the whole OS. I'm not a very demanding user either. I just need a good text editor, a web browser, calculator, music player, and basic command line utilities like GCC and SSH, but Ubuntu failed to provide me with an environment that does all this out of the box without pissing me off while I'm working. And don't even get me started on the Canonical modifications in Fagfox that would reinstall every update and slow it down.
Just install Debian. At least you can easily fix any problems you have with that.
>I now personally use fedora
Stopped reading right there
both got systemd AIDS
only Devuan from here
Fedora is a good operating system. What do you have against it?
>inb4 you don't like the name
>inb4 some shit about RedHat
so much disinformation in one post.
Ubuntu is just Debian with somewhat newer packages and additional adware
There was the Amazon thing which is gone now, but there is still Zitgeist or whatever it's called and the advertisements in MOTD, Zitgeist is the one you'll be worrying about since it is direct telemetry of your complete usage of your computer, supposedly helps to deliver you a smoother computing experience.
I disagree. Ubuntu is a superior server OS simply because the release schedule is so predictable, on top of that Ubuntu has very polished integrations for systems like Openstack.
Oh frick you caught me, I thought no one would say anything.
>even tried Googling the error message and the code
That's where I stopped.
Debian and Ubuntu are basically the same thing. At least talk about distros that actually have differences. Debian vs gentoo vs arch vs fedora is a better question.
>Using plebian opearting systems like Noobuntu and Dumbian
>Not using ARCH
Jesus Christ, get some fucking class or skill
Neither Ubuntu is Spyware and Debian is made for experienced system administrators just die
>Explain which is best and why.
There is no "best".
They have different strengths which mostly come down how familiar you are already with Linux.
Debian is better if you already know what you are doing and understand Linux to some extend, but if you are completely new Ubuntu is definitely superior.
This is like that xkcd comic
Basically the same, I jumped to Debian because I wanted even more control.
then prove Canonical is not NSA branch
Why there is that kind of people exists?
Is there life in America not good enough?
From Russia with Love
This. Anyone dogmatic about economic policy is a fucking RETARD.
The burden of proof is on you, nignog
Are there really any problems with running debian as a desktop?
It runs the programs I want it to and there is a good amount of info to help you get things working correctly. I like it.
>Are there really any problems with running debian as a desktop?
No, why would there be?
5 years and counting with debian on desktop and laptop. Only problems I encountered are with some hardware, ie can't get usb to work how it should on an old aspire one netbook and with an old wifi card (even with non-free drivers). But I can't tell if it's a debian only problem. Other than that, it's comfy, it werks and all that.
I suck cock, was meant for
I must have read a few too many anti Debian memes.
Never heard about that.
ubuntu has ads
So you get the base model because it doesn't have the bloated infotainment system that's there to pad out a list of features and not to actually be useful for anything.
At least link to the disambiguation page.
you didnt even read the article you posted
Lol, not him. But didn't know that. Thanks x-d
>uses Jewbuntu
>calls others nigger
I would have said debian but 9 isn't any more stable than ubuntu
or you can specify a root pass and then just install sudo later..
Ubuntu is what Debian ideally should be for the desktop.
Just have Debian Server and Debian Desktop. Done.
I ain't edgy btw I am uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh a good, law-abiding boy but I love communism and supporting the proletariat. I don't do drugs or drink, I just do what I can to bring up the working class and reviving the USSR.
it completely depends on your needs.
Ubuntu is great for beginners. Debian is better if you're more experienced and want more control over your system.
Debian
Now that Unity is dead there's no reason to use Ubuntu over it. Use Testing/Sid and you're good to go with relatively up-to-date packages as well.
But its a local telemetry and doesn't affect Ubuntu flavors like Xubuntu, i think.
Debian is basically Ubuntu without the bullshit. It's also used by serious people (NASA, Harvard, MIT, IRS, Department of Defense, CERN...).
a distro isn't better just because some big corporations or famous people use it
go to gnulag
…And Sup Forums continues to be a shitpit for no good reason.
