Hey lads, /out/ here

Hey lads, /out/ here.

I'm currently on a longer journey around the world, living as a backpack traveller. My laptop recently died, so now I'm in the market for a new piece of gear.

I've been wanting a tablet that's sturdy enough to survive on the road while also having Bluetooth keyboard compatability. I want to change from a standard laptop for a lot of reasons, mainly weight and the fact that I have a solar USB charger.

So do you guys have any suggestions as to what tablet that might be? Thanks beforehand.

Pic is a village in Japan I visited this spring.

How do you afford to feed yourself on your trip as a pretend vagrant?
Or did you cheat and simply set aside a few thousand to cover expenses?

Set aside a few thousand before leaving. Burned most during 7 months in Japan. Now in Australia picking up odd jobs to save a bit before going to New Zealand.

we have enough backpacking cunts in NZ thanks, fuck off elsewhere

Do you just sleep outside or something?

Oh, but I'm coming!
I'll shit in every bush or tall grass I see!

I don't do typical backpacker shit. I mostly fuck off to the countryside or get a low-key job. I pay my taxes and keep my shit in line.

Sometimes. I bring along a tent and a tarp, plus sleeping bag and mat.

In Japan I just crashed in public parks or roadside up in the mountains. Or in the parking lot of a Lawson Station. Pic related.

>traveling with a laptop
I just got back from 13 months traveling through Latin America. Have also done long Asia and Africa trips. All I've ever brought or needed, tech-wise, was an iPhone/iPod Touch and an eReader.

A laptop seems pretty much guaranteed to get broken, and really what do you need it for traveling?

I know in the US, they have anti homeless laws just to fuck with you, but is Lawson's really this indifferent to having literal randos set up a tent in their parking lot?

get an ipad

got any tips for travelling in Japan? visiting Tokyo, osaka, sapporo, Okinawa in december

To be honest, the though that my x230 will ever broke never crossed my mind partly because Sup Forums shill. Do you guys not doing some remote working shits when on the road?
Not op btw.

I used it to manage all my shit. But I figure I can do that as well with a decent tablet.

In Japan they have a subculture known as 'nojuku'. It's basically young people going on a personal pilgrimage for whatever reasons. I met a few other during my time there, though all Japanese.

I basically explained to the Lawson Station clerk that I was a hitchhiking nojuku, that is was very late and I probably couldn't get another car that night. I asked nicely if I could sleep in the corner of the parking lot, he called his boss, bods said okay, and so I set up camp as discretely as I could.

Not buying apple products.

How long are you there?

Go in to the country, rent a car and drive around the small farm towns in the mountains. 10/10 comfy.

Also, in Osaka, go to this address at night. Look for the red staircase. Bring at least ¥20,000 cash. You won't regret it.

Not sketchy at all. You've piqued my interest...

I'm kind of getting an itch to quit my wagecuck job and do this. Japanese milf pastatutes sound sweet.

It's a good kind of sketchy.

Holy fuck, I was born at the wrong country

I work for a while, save money, and then travel with no cares.

I'm not convinced that any "digital nomads" actually exist.

I'll save your post in the off chance I do visit Japan someday.
>end up getting jumped by gang members that make away with my ¥20,000

Get a Tab Pro S, comes with Windows 10 and is essentially a tablet w/keyboard cover so it can also function as a laptop. You could also get a galaxy book if you have the money, they are fucking awesome.

What kind of izakaya cost 20k yen/sitting? Did the master gave you a blowjob?

That's up for you to discover.

Fuck off back to your own country Australian youth need jobs instead of you backpackin cunts stealin em all

How old are you OP?
Look for cheap tavlets on aliexpress. Example Chuwi, Cube, etc.

This actually looks quite good.

Can it run Windows 8? Would I be able to put a laptop SSD in it?

see 24.

Just look at this shit. Shows the red staircases OP is talking about. Start at 1:42.

Are these family-run? The thought of a motherly/housewife looking woman hawking men to fuck their girls is interesting.

Really cool OP. How long have you been doing that for?
Also, do you normally stay around villages, big cities or deeper into the wild (trekking routes for example)?
How about transport, do you hitchhike, surf trains, go by bus, go walking or what?
Also not related to what you asked, but very useful: Install Osmand to your phone. Completely offline, very detailed worldwide maps including POIs, topographical maps, public transport info, trekking routes, etc.

Go to Nara for half a day if you like deers. Also if you can afford it, eat fugu in Osaka and hope to die

Yokohama is comfy. Not sure what to see except Kamakura however.

>How long have you been doing that for?
About 9 months now. Started with 7 in Japan, now in Australia going on 2 months.

>Also, do you normally stay around villages, big cities or deeper into the wild (trekking routes for example)?
I've done farm work in exchange for room and board most of the time through a website called wwoofjapan.com. Other than that I have my tent.

>How about transport, do you hitchhike, surf trains, go by bus, go walking or what?
Took one highway bus from Fukuoka to Miyazaki, but hitchhiked the rest of the time. It's ridiculously easy to hitchhike in Japan.

ok as a dude that has been traveling for the past 4.5 years, working and volunteering at hostels and shit to support himself. I really do love my thinkpad I can tuck it away in my pack and its heavy (4 pounds) but it will not break no matter how much shit I put it through. t420i I got for 100 bucks a loooong time ago. something thinner might be more appealing tho, as long as its tough but I am more than happy with my chinkpad while travelin.

where in australia

Brisbane. Considering moving location.

>It's ridiculously easy to hitchhike in Japan.
Really? From what the internet says about them being super xenophobic I can't imagine anyone wanting to pick up some random gaijin.

Don't listen to this cunt We are fine with backpackers in NZ so long as they aren't raping people who pick up hitchhikers, damaging native forests or shagging our sheep.

kek enjoy holiday season

>From what the internet says about them being super xenophobic I can't imagine anyone wanting to pick up some random gaijin.
Stop listening to the Internet.

They just don't know how to speak English, and that has resulted in some unfortunate encounters which left people thinking they hate foreigners.

Never met nicer people.

And to answer your question try to get an HP elite book pro they're like 250 on eBay for a 2nd gen i7 they also a made with military specs in mind so they can take a licking and keep on ticking generally. I have one I installed Gentoo on they're pretty nice

That's sweet. Wish I had the tenacity to drop everything and go backpacking in a foreign country.
Good luck and safe travels for the future, user.

If you want an actually durable laptop, get a thinkpad x220 or x230

>Not buying apple products.

here's what.
i'm a business travel and i got fucked in the ass last month because my phone died overseas.
I had to buy a new phone because it wasn't covered under warranty in the country i was at.
Apple is the only company with solid service anywhere.
As much as I hate apple and dislike iphones, i got the iphone 8+ because i won't be fucked in the ass again.
