0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.

What I love about GNU/Linux is that almost evertying save for web browsing can be entirely done in the terminal like text editing or extracting a zip file. Even better, many of these programs can be mixed together if a single program doesn't have a feature you're looking for.

Gnu is Not my Userland

...

butthurt

Why would someone use rar over zip/tar/7zip/bzip/gzip/gzip2

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Daily reminder that GNU/Linux is neither mostly Linux nor mostly GNU, and that any and all arguments over which is bigger or better are moot and the system should be called something entirely different which gives no credit to any one party, be they Stallman, Torvalds, or even Poettering

The better question is:
>How to extract rar files without installing nonfree software?
Here I highly recommend unar/lsar, also known as "The Unarchiver".

The system has been called GNU since 1983 when the GNU project started developing it.

tbqh I like this eternal it's just linux thing
it gives gnu and free software so much attantion
thank you for your good work

Maybe I'll just start calling it GNU then

Serious question. Why do you hate GNU so much (or is it just trolling?)?

yeah we should call it gnu

Is unrar not good for extracting rar files?

Stallman doesn't agree to 100%.
gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html#justgnu

I can only speak for Debian, where we have unrar, which is nonfree and unrar-free, which doesn't support the newer rar3somethingsomething formats. unar seems to support everything.

unrar is good (maybe the best as it was made by the rar developer and open source so your can compile/modify/improve it) but its license doesn't allow using it to make a rar compatible packer so it doesn't count as free software.

GNU+Linux looks huge.

Stallman eats his own foot skin like a bonobo btw.

Arch Linux was Canada's way of apologizing for FreeBSD, btw.

>ha! someone does something weird!

ok enough shitposting

can somebody recommend me a comprehensive resource on learning linux effectively? thx

FreeBSD's origins are in Cali, not Cucknada

He does it whilst giving a lecture when he is being filmed. Gross.

I asked in the last thread about resizing the home partition of my open suse install. I learned that you can actually do this by using yast, I picked my home lvm and chose max size. That was all. Really easy.

kernelnewbies.org/

yeah it's weird but that doesn't detract from what he does. people do gross shit in public all the time if you take the time to watch people a little more closely. rms happened to have a camera on him/not give a shit.

Time for some fun. vim-adventures.com/

I wouldnt say other normal people would do that, ever. I like his point of view and agree mostly. But his hygiene seems to be not one of his concerns.

I'm not saying it's normal by far, I'm just saying that he's not the first to do something icky in public is all, I agree his sense of hygiene is off wholeheartedly.

How is his hygene relevant to technology?

It's Linux, just Linux.

it's not I participated in getting off topic, my apologies, back to relevant questions. sadly, i have none.

This is cute, though I doubt it's the most practical way to learn.

Agreed. Linux is the correct name for Linux; the kernel used with the GNU system (or short: GNU/Linux).

>tfw just found out you can play videos in ASCII in the terminal using mplayer

Wtf I love Linux now.

What is the best distro for browsing Sup Forums and watching animu?

Seems my filters are working wonderful in this thread

How to use powertop to increase my battery life?
Useless, just shows how much things use power.

wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/powertop

Run it again. It does more than what you said.

apt-get moo

Just leave it running?

No, you run it and hit the arrow keys to get to the next/prev tabs.

...

Don't see any use of it except tunables tab

aptitude moo

Allow me to clarify. Linux is the name of the operating system. Anyone who disagrees is a zealot Communist.

From the same link:
>I would have to pay a fee if I use “Linux” in the name of a product, and that would also apply if I say “GNU/Linux”. Is it wrong if I use “GNU” without “Linux”, to save the fee?

What the hell? How can anyone trust Linus Torvalds' opinion on the name of our system when he is earning money from people calling it "Linux"? I gotta say, the more I learn about Stallman, and the more I learn about Torvalds the more I'm actually starting to think Torvalds is a complete douchebag.

Why don't you start another /flt/ thread and go there and toggle your Android/Linux airplane mode off and on while you samefag all day pretending you have friends?

Fuck you

This is a friendly thread, please don't be so mean!

rude

I use rEFInd as a boot manager.
Alongside the usual Ubuntu .EFI image, I also see:
>vmlinuz-4.10.0-35-generic.efi

Is there a way to hide this from the bootloader? Is it something I can remove from my hard drive entirely?

You can remove old kernels safely, you will also need to remove them from the boot loader menu config

systemctl is-system-running | cowsay

systemctl: command not found
__
< >
--
\ ^__^
\ (oo)\_______
(__)\ )\/\
||----w |
|| ||

>tfw installing Gentoo

>you will also need to remove them from the boot loader menu config
No need to do it manually, when you uninstall a kernel in debian/ubuntu/similar the uninstall script will call update-grub2 to refresh the grub menu list.

Guys, call me retarded or whatever, but I feel uneasy about changing my OS. I just don't like the feeling of possibly bricking expensive hardware, even though I'm simply installing Xubuntu. Is this just the virgin newfag feeling or should I take some pre caution? Should I refrain from erasing my previous OS (I could back it up, but there isn't much to back up since I reseted windows 10 only a couple weeks ago) and simply dual-boot, just for now? Or am I just being irrationally afraid of messing anything up and only a retard could do so?

alias systemctl="rm -r ~/*"
Hope that helps.

>installing gentoo
>compiling anything
kys you fell for one too many memes. everyone in here is embarrassed for you

pic related because connection error triggered.

get a livecd / liveusb and see if your hardware works at all (most likely it will)
backup your important data. have a backup-windows-install disk if things go sideways.

enjoy

Why are you so angry?

maybe hi butt hurt

from what?

If you autists would stick to your shitty circlejerk thread the rest of this board would be a much better place. Fucking Linux losers. Never learn

It's only teaches you the basic movement until it starts demanding your money.

Thanks, user.

I think you mean guy lusers. They are the ones shitposting their politics

why are you compiling gentoo in a vm? do you think it'll make you a hacker?
you are seriously stupid. just install the binary packages.

GNU/Linux losers.

Why are you so angry?

>possibly bricking expensive hardware, even though I'm simply installing Xubuntu
Im wondering if this is actually possible. Normally it really shouldnt be possible... hm

thenextweb.com/insider/2016/02/01/running-a-single-delete-command-can-permanently-brick-laptops-from-inside-linux/

just be careful about what commands you run. protip: dont run "rm -rf /" ever.

Your fear of "bricking expensive hardware" is unfounded. Things will either just work, or they won't, and the only thing to worry about is whether or not you can go back to windows if you aren't happy with the result.

are you a hacker yet looking at gcc output in your vm?

I have a dual boot setup that is roughly arranged this way: /boot partition on sda1, Windoze on sda2, / on sda3 and /home on sda4. If I shrink the Windows partition, move / on the left without changing its size and reallocate the free space to /home, would I need to do anything after rebooting into Linux or will it automatically recognize the new disk space? What if I outright delete Windows? Would sda3 become sda2 and so on? If yes, does this have any practical effect on my OS?

Why do you assume I'm a hacker? and you still have to answer what makes you so angry.

What's the GNU/Linux filesystem of the future?

btrfs?,f2fs?

not angry. I also compiled openoffice in gentoo when I was young and stupid and fell for Sup Forums memes.
the difference between you and me is that I now recognize compiling most packages in gentoo is something that is stupid (pointless and time consuming). and thats ok, you're allowed to be stupid and make your own mistakes.
but dont expect to not be called stupid when you come in here brag about being stupid. :)

it depends if the root/home folder will stay in sda3/4, if not, you just update the /etc/fstab file

I'm currently on Manjaro.

I dare you to convince me on not going back to Ubuntu.

Then, why are you so angry?

You sound angry.

It's the ls -l problem.
You need to put an empty code tag between - and l to circument that crap.
