So, what's the deal with buying a used CPU?
So, what's the deal with buying a used CPU?
there is none
you just don't
buying a used cpu is like buying used contact lenses. you just don't. no telling what the previous owner did with it. for all you know it's a binned chip.
why would anyone sell a used CPU unless it's shit?
You can use that reasoning for any used goods.
My case:
Been building gaming/graphic content production rigs for years:
Mostly second hand i5 CPUs+the nvidia card of the moment (new).
MoBos I use mostly new and second hand mechanical Hard disks.
I have buit +50 in the last 5 years.
None of them. None. Has ever had a problem CPU related.
I don't understand the hate.
I bought a used CPU from a forum of hardware enthusiasts where the same people have been buying, selling, and discussing for two decades now. I buy most of my components from there, and also sell the old ones. Never had a problem.
poor people
I will build a dual X79 rig and it will last at least 8 years.
It's like buying used cars - there are only two reasons to do so, and that is if you are a collector or doing a project car out of some unique model.
Why?
If someone sells a relatively new car (like 2 years old) there's 100% something wrong with it, because noone in their right mind would buy a car for 2 years and sell it for a massive (cars lose most of their value when driving out of a dealership and over the first 3 years) loss, unless there's something seriously wrong with it.
If someone sells an mid-aged car, it's probably because the cost of ownership is starting to be greater than cost of the car.
If someone sells an old car, it's probably because it's a steaming pile of poo.
Buying cars like that is a serious problem, because most of the retards who do so believe the previous owner/dealer that "it's brand new, just put fuel in and drive" and endanger other road users.
Same with CPUs - if someone sells a new one, it's probably because something is wrong with it, a middle-aged one is probably not a lot cheaper than current gen offerings and an old one is well, old, and by that extension, crap.
I'm not saying you can't find a gem once in a while - but the rule is, if you can't afford new one, you can't afford used one. Just buy a weaker unit or get a proper job.
>inb4 mad poorfags
buying a used cpu would feel the same to me as if I had just bought a pair of used underpants that had some stains in them and was now trying them on. It would make me feel uncomfortable, and cheap. I would feel like I would just prefer to be naked and wait till i could buy brand new ones
Fuck Sup Forums is stupid sometimes. Enthusiasts with more money than sense buy the latest and greatest as soon as it comes out, so they can dick measure their latest bench score on forums. Their old hardware is sold on those same forums for a discount to those that didn't drink the Intel upgrade cycle koolaid for 3% IPC gain. Let the first idiot pay the early adopters tax, the "poorfag" is winning in the end.
or someone gets computer and suddenly loses a source of income and needs a months rent or two
and that shiny new computer wont work very well without power
>Fuck Sup Forums is stupid sometimes.
Sup Forums has been extra retarded with the new immigrants invading /pol, the poo slips out of the loo and we pay the price for it. Example: this thread.
>he unironically only buys cars new
I bet you think leasing is a good idea too
I bought a used i7 3770 on r**dit for 100 flat and a mobo for 30 and 16gb of 1600mhz of C Vengeance ram for 55.
Yeah youre right I should spend 300 on a i7 7700 and 120 on a mobo and 140 on 16gb. all new of course!
Good advice Mosche!!
Got my R7 1700 used, theres nothing wrong with the used cpu market.
So the only reason why someone would sell a 2 year old car is because something is wrong with it?
There's definitely no circumstance under which someone would elect to not continue a two year lease, and the dealership just sells it off then.
bought a used 4790k. absolutely perfect
jew niggers want your shekels, goys. buy new, faggots
I bought a used E5-2670 with a 3 year warranty.
Yes, I buy cars new. No, leasing (or any sort of debt) is stupid, buy it with cash. If you can't, you can't afford it, buy a cheaper one, not everyone needs S-class Merc as their first car, not everyone needs the best of the best pc parts to shitpost on Sup Forums
CPUs are one of the few parts you can get used with little to no worry. It's finding a compatible motherboard that still works and isn't shit that's problematic.
>second hand mechanical Hard disks.
who tf sells hdds?
all no name sellers on amazon and Newegg offering new HDDs are selling server rack refuse with smart data cleared
they will sell the whole computer or probably damage the CPU during extraction
I bought a second hand Xeon for the 775 mod.
Zero regrets, 20$. cheap as fuck.
Now I'm using since 2011 a i5-2500k, best CPU ever.
have you never thought of the richfags who keep buying computer parts literally every generation for no reason at all? these are the kind of people who sell their parts to poorfags and there's usually nothing wrong with them because the kind that buys new parts every year only uses his computer to shitpost on Sup Forums
true. They're mostly tech enthusiasts who aren't totally broke, though.
In terms of the CPU you receive, that's a good thing.
This "analogy" is completely wrong. Cars are not like CPUs. Not all cars are mere appliances to get from A to B like your Prius are. An old car (depending on what it is) still has value, while an old CPU objectively does not
It either works or it dont son
Same with gpus
Usually you get parts that didnt pass the silicon lottery or have been in an office doing nothing.
With RAM price being inflated how about buying used RAM now? RAM seems pretty durable, you'd need to really try to fuck it up.
>Be retard.
>Buy 1-2TB HD.
>Suddenly be aware of SSD Technology
>Profit
Option B
>Buy Craptop
>Swap Mech Hd x SSD
>Sell Hd
I usually spend about 275€ in pieces, work 2-3 hours. And earn 200€. Pretty simple. People is happy, I can afford some nice things.
4790k used costs around 400$ here.
A 7700k costs about 450.
1600x costs 325$
I've done it with several Xeons. It really depends on how it was used.
Bought a used 2600K on eBay. Served me well for a year at 4.6GHz and is now boxed up. Also bought a 1090T to play around with earlier this year that did 4GHz easily.
Posting from a used 4930K. Currently at 4.5GHz stable. I'd push it further but the ambient temperature is too high.
